- An investigative journalist shocks the White House when he reveals classified information during a press briefing and leaves Seth struggling to contain the damage from the leaked story. Meanwhile, Hannah unearths a key connection between MacLeish and the conspiracy.
- Tom, back at the White House on a reduced schedule due to still recovering from his gunshot wound, may have little respite based on the fact of Vice-President MacLeish being shot by his wife who turned the gun on herself, and the press corps at least knowing of a shooting at the cemetery. Tom feels that it is his and not Seth's responsibility to inform the press and thus the public of the MacLeish deaths. However, Tom still has three levels of "need to know" at least at this point in time. Those that need to know everything and find out who was behind the MacLeishes and the Capitol bombing are his security detail, namely Mike, Hannah and John. Hannah believes certain key people are the mysterious woman who kidnapped and killed Luke Atwood, former Chief of Staff Charlie Langdon who was assumed to have perished in the bombing but who she saw alive in the flesh, and Alvin Joyner, who may be able to provide information about what happened with MacLeish's squad in Afghanistan to have radicalized them all. Hannah wants Jason's help, he who may be difficult to convince in that he has just buried his son and has been fired for his deception in the matter to save Luke. The second level of "need to know" are his key inner staff, namely Aaron, Emily and Seth, who he does not tell of the assumed reasons behind the deaths. On the sideline of this second level is Kimble, who is now first in line to assume the Oval Office if anything were to happen to Tom. Although Tom does not believe Aaron part of the conspiracy, he still uses the situation to keep Aaron out of the loop at least in the short term. And the third level of "need to know" is the press corps and the public. Seth's job in this matter is made more difficult with an old face among the press corps attending one of the first press conferences following the deaths, that person who most probably would not have foreseen ever being in the White House press corps again. Through this very public time for Seth, he receives a visit from some old friends who give him a public perspective of the current state of the White House. And through this tense period, Alex negotiates with Tom about what to do with their family unit, Alex who no longer feels the White House the safest place for Leo and Penny.—Huggo
