Billie Piper has joined the cast of Lena Dunham’s feature adaptation of “Catherine, Called Birdy” for Working Title and Amazon.
Piper stars in the medieval coming-of-age comedy opposite “Fleabag’s” Andrew Scott and “Game of Thrones” breakout Bella Ramsey. The film, written and directed by Dunham, is in the early stages of production.
“Catherine, Called Birdy” has been a longtime passion project for Dunham, who first announced plans to adapt the award-winning 1994 children’s novel by Karen Cushman into a film in 2014. The coming of age story, set in 13th century England, follows a 14-year-old girl named Catherine (Ramsey) who “bucks against convention,” namely the arranged marriages her father (Scott) has planned out for her. Piper will play Catherine’s mother.
Working Title, in association with Dunham’s Good Thing Going banner, is producing the project.

Scarlett Johansson is still awaiting her first Oscar nomination, and good things come to those who wait because she looks solid to become one of the select few to get two acting bids in one year on Monday.
While Johansson has long been expected to reap a Best Actress nomination for “Marriage Story,” her fate in Best Supporting Actress for “Jojo Rabbit” had been up in the air, thanks to a far more fluid category, which ultimately may actually help her. Though she was snubbed by the Golden Globes for “Jojo,” she’s hit the other televised precursors, Critics’ Choice, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA Awards, solidifying her position. Helping her cause is the fact that “Jojo” is a Best Picture contender; the Nazi satire had a great Tuesday with six BAFTA nominations, a Producers Guild of America Award nomination and a surprising Directors Guild of America Award bid for Taika Waititi.

Scott Z. Burns’ “The Report” tells the story of the Herculean efforts of Daniel J. Jones to make sure that the Senate Intelligence Committee report on torture saw the light of day.
Its powerful resonance with “right now” is because it makes us imagine how many thousands of unseen Daniel J. Joneses — mid-range white-collar workers with normal values and decent character — in government are leaving in droves from Justice, State, Fda, Epa, DEA … etc.
Dan Jones is a whistleblower in the tradition of Mark Felt, Karen Silkwood and Jeffrey Wigand; and Scott’s film fully earns its place at the table alongside the iconic pictures of Alan J. A great bad movie makes you ask, “What did I just see? And when can I see it again?” as opposed to a run-of-the-mill stinker, the kind you wish you’d never watched and will immediately forget that you did. The great bad movies inspire think-pieces, podcasts, watching parties and feverish cult adoration. The regular ones merely wallow in mediocrity. Here’s my alphabetical list of the greatest bad movies the 2010s had to offer:
“Collateral Beauty” (2016)
Will Smith is sad, and his best friends gaslight him by hiring actors to pretend to be Love, Time and Death, but we’re supposed to find their efforts — noble? Charming? None of this makes a lick of sense, but it’s all delivered with hilarious gravitas by the likes of Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren. Make sure to stick around for the shameless third-act twist, and a labored explanation of the title.

The first scene of Channel 4’s upcoming “Baghdad Central,” created and written by Stephen Butchard and lead-directed by Alice Troughton, captures, with a jolt, the hectic hubbub of an ordinary street scene in Baghdad: One man fixes a container, banging it rhythmically as if it were a drum; there’s the table of street conversation, a car tooting, people throwing a dice, a woman selling fruit.
Produced by Fremantle’s Euston Films and sold by Fremantle, “Baghdad Central” surprises in other ways. Apart from a brief prelude, it unspools from November 2003, when Baghdad has fallen to Coalition forces, but is told majorly from the point of view of normal occupied Iraqis, especially former inspector Muhsin al-Khafaji of the Iraqi police, once an upright respected cop, and his two daughters, the gravely ill Mrouj and the estranged Sawsan.

HBO is rounding out its ensemble cast for its Game Of Thrones prequel pilot. Marquis Rodriguez (When They See Us), John Simm (Strangers), Richard McCabe (Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams), John Heffernan (Dracula) and Dixie Egerickx (The Secret Garden) are set as series regulars in the drama pilot from writer Jane Goldman and author/Got co-executive producer George R.R. Martin.
Created by Goldman and Martin and written by Goldman based on a story by her and Martin, the untitled prequel takes place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. It chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend — it’s not the story we think we know.

“Mary Poppins Returns” cinematographer Dion Beebe and director Rob Marshall were excited to “embark on a movie that is completely devoid of cynicism. You don’t get that opportunity very often,” Beebe says. A sequel to the 1964 Disney classic, the film finds the practically perfect nanny (Emily Blunt) returning to once again help the Banks family using a little magic, music, and mirth. Watch our exclusive video interview with Beebe above.

“I think in order to survive, we become cynical,” Beebe continues. “So to have this character who is feisty and opinionated, but is also joyful and does everything with good intention” felt like a spoonful of sugar for troubled times.
Beebe, who won an Oscar for Marshall’s “Memoirs of a Geisha” (2005), needed to figure out how to “reconcile that iconic original with essentially a modern-day version.” The first film “is very...

For a particular subset of TV fans, the only thing that matters in 2019 is the six remaining “movie-esque” episodes of “Game of Thrones.” But in close second place is the greenlit untitled prequel series, taking place thousands of years before the HBO juggernaut but offering a whole new level of insight into the world of Westeros.
On Tuesday, HBO announced that who would be directing the pilot for said prequel, and it’s a choice which should have those fans pretty excited — because British director S.J. Clarkson has stealthily become one of TV’s most reliable directors in recent years.

Happy Thursday,"Pretty Little Liars" fans. We've got some more pretty interesting and great news for you guys on "The Perfectionists" spin off front. The production team has decided to bring on another female character that will be a recurring role. That means she won't be a season regular, but we'll see her just enough to remember that she even exists. The character we are speaking of will be named Dana. The description for Dana is that she will be the new head of security at Beacon Heights University. She will be determined and perceptive almost to the point of omniscience. After recent events, Dana will keep Alison (Sasha Pieterse), Mona (Janel Parrish) and the Perfectionists on their toes. Wow, her character sounds like she will mean pretty serious business. According the folks over at Deadline.com, the actress who is playing her is someone that most of you guys might actually recognize.

Shore Scripts picked five scripts in nine different film genres to feature, which means you now have free access to films written by Stanley Kubrick, Tony Kushner, Rian Johnson, Nora Ephron, and Tina Fey.
Shore Scripts is an organization made up filmmakers in the United Kingdom and the United States that seeks to help emerging screenwriters break into the industry. The team is offering free downloadable scripts for films as classic as “The Iron Giant,” “Goodfellas,” “A Clockwork Orange,” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Though he's better known for his work behind the camera as the Oscar-nominated writer of The Hours and The Reader, as well as the recent Netflix series Collateral, David Hare takes a starring role front and center in Wall. Or at least an animated version of him does.

Emmy voters often love Oscar winning movie stars like Nicole Kidman (“Big Little Lies”), Jessica Lange (“American Horror Story”), and many more. And this year could see more Oscar champs claim TV’s biggest prize, including Al Pacino (“Paterno”) and Penelope Cruz (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace”). But as television programming continues to expand with cable and streaming the small screen has become a playground for Oscar favorites behind the camera as well. So how many this year will make the cut?
David Fincher has been nominated for two Oscars for Best Director (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “The Social Network”), and he’s already an Emmy winner for directing the premiere episode of “House of Cards.” But while that political drama sits out this Emmy cycle (its sixth and final season won’t premiere until later this year), Fincher has another Netflix series in the running: “Mindhunter,...

Hours after Maddie Poppe won season 16 of “American Idol,” two of the previous champs — Ruben Studdard (season 2) and Taylor Hicks (season 5) — made fun of their fleeting fame in a music video spoof on Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” That got us wondering what happened to the other lucky 13 winners of this reality competition series.

No TV conversation is complete anymore without the Netflix behemoth, as the service adds entire seasons to its never-ending pile on a weekly basis. While recently putting together a roundup of every TV review IndieWire has published in 2018, we came to the realization that it would probably take a lifetime to get through all the shows released in this calendar year alone.
Netflix has said it will spend upwards of $8 billion annually in programming costs. Granted, some of that goes to acquisition of previously produced content — but CFO David Wells has said Netflix will produce as much as 700 originals worldwide this year. That’s a lot of TV.
In 2017, Netflix ended the year by reporting that users watched more than 140 million hours of content per day, or 1 billion hours per week. But that’s a collective stat. To put a solid number on how much of our lives Netflix has been vying for,...

The BBC is looking to kick out against the “crushing competition” of global Svod services including Netflix and Amazon as it eyes a reboot of its aborted digital service Project Kangaroo and steps up its PR war against Silicon Valley.
It has emerged that the British public broadcaster is once again in talks with rival broadcasters including ITV and Channel 4, as well as Hollywood studio NBC Universal, to launch its own UK streaming service to fight back against the deep-pocketed digital players.
The move comes nearly ten years after Project Kangaroo, a planned video-on-demand between the broadcasters and the BBC’s commercial arm, was blocked by the British Competition Commission.
However, with Netflix now having over 8M subscribers in the country and Amazon Prime Video over 4M, and with the looming launch of Apple’s A-list original programming plans, the broadcasters are looking to bounce back.

Although highly regarded as a theater star — he earned a Tony nomination in 2006 for “Awake and Sing!” and just returned to Broadway last season in “The Price” — Mark Ruffalo is for most people a bona fide movie star. For his film performances, he has been nominated for three Oscars, two Golden Globes and four Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning one as part of the ensemble cast of “Spotlight” in 2015.

These days, however, Ruffalo’s greatest fame is largely thanks to his being part of the Marvel universe, having taken over the roles of Dr. Bruce Banner and The Hulk in 2012’s “Marvel’s The Avengers.” After a cameo performance in 2013’s “Iron Man 3,” Ruffalo’s Hulk also appeared in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in 2015, “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017 and is now in theaters in “Avengers: Infinity War.

Paramount saved its biggest star for last at Wednesday’s CinemaCon presentation. Pioneer of the Year Tom Cruise, with director Chris McQuarrie and co-stars Simon Pegg, Angela Bassett, and Henry Cavill, walked theater owners behind the scenes of his latest outrageous “Mission: Impossible” stunt. “I’m scared to see the dailies,” admitted new chairman Jim Gianopulos.
For “M:i – Fallout” (July 27), besides various hair-raising helicopter and motorcycle stunts in the streets of Paris including a rapid swing against traffic around the Arc de Triomphe — Cruise wanted to perform a high-altitude skydive from over 25,000 feet. So he and his director devised a sequence that was “physically possible without killing him,” said McQuarrie.

Carey Mulligan could win an Emmy for Best Movie/Mini Actress for her role as Detective Inspector Kip Glaspie in the Netflix limited series “Collateral.” That would continue a tradition of Emmy winning crime-fighters that includes famous roles played by Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly (“Cagney and Lacey”), Gillian Anderson (“The X-Files“) and Mariska Hargitay (“Law and Order: Special Victims Unit”). But the woman Mulligan may most wish to emulate is Helen Mirren, who has won Movie/Mini Actress four times, more than any other woman. Half of those victories were as Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison in the “Prime Suspect” franchise.
Mirren earned six nominations for playing Dci Tennison: for “Prime Suspect II” (1993), “Prime Suspect III” (1994), “Prime Suspect IV: Scent of Darkness” (1996), “Prime Suspect V: Errors of Judgement” (1997), “Prime Suspect VI: The Last Witness” (2004) and “Prime Suspect: The Final Act” (2007). Of those, she won twice, for “Scent of Darkness” and “The Final Act.

This is simply a bizarre Emmy category this year with notable performances from a ton of projects that earned mixed reviews at best. 2017 was a historic year at the Emmys thanks to Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which won Best Drama Series, and Netflix’s “Black Mirror: San Junipero,” which won Best TV Movie. Those were the first streaming shows ever to win those awards, and now streaming services are looking to expand their territory even further by launching an invasion into the Best Limited Series race.
According to the early predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users, the strongest streaming contender for Best Limited Series appears to be “Godless,” which ranks third with 7/2 odds. The seven-episode Western starring Jeff Daniels, Jack O’Connell and Michelle Dockery premiered last November, and it got off to a strong start in the awards season with a nomination for Daniels at the SAG Awards and bids for Daniels, O’Connell and Best Limited Series at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Just two years after it was cancelled by Fox, “American Idol” returns to ABC on March 11. When this reality competition series hit the airwaves back in 2002, it was a ratings smash, and many of its early winners enjoyed huge success. Indeed, its first-ever champ, Kelly Clarkson, has won three Grammys and parlayed her fame into a string of hit records and a new gig as a judge on the competition, NBC’s’ “The Voice.”
However, many of the more recent music newcomers to be named “American Idol” have found that their time in the spotlight is fleeting. In the photo gallery above, we take a look back at the first 15 “American Idol” winners to date and see how many have been lucky so far and which have been jinxed.

The reason two-time Academy Award nominee David Hare (“The Hours,” “The Reader”) wanted to write the BBC2/Netflix limited series “Collateral” is that he felt no one else was writing television about the issue at its center: Illegal immigration.
“I think the movement of people is the biggest subject of the 21st century and nobody’s writing about it,” he said to IndieWire in a recent interview. “In the last few summers, we’ve had attempted mass migration from Libya, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, from everywhere. People are trying to get into Western countries. And obviously the West is trying to protect itself against the arrival of these people. This is going to play out in the coming years. I wanted to write about it as a matter of urgency.”

A detective story without a clear central figure is a tricky proposition. Most mysteries, especially when a brutal unsolved murder is involved, benefit from having a north star, a home base for the series to return to when it’s needed most. If there’s one notable thing about “Collateral,” a co-production between the BBC and Netflix, it’s that instead of filtering the entire story through the psyche of a sole lead investigator, this four-part series is grounded in a half-dozen entry points. The result is something that isn’t groundbreaking at every turn, but it’s a show that tries to take a more global view to a localized crime.
Although the series isn’t entirely trained on her character, Carey Mulligan is still an excellent, welcome addition to the TV landscape. She stars as Kip Glaspie, a London detective investigating the death of Abdullah Atif, shot and...

Each time Vincent is ready execute one of his targets the scene begins to get a little more tense until the climax when Vincent finally gets his target. Netflix has released the trailer for their upcoming murder mystery thriller with Carey Mulligan called Collateral. The trailer for the series does a great job of setting up the premise... who murdered the pizza delivery driver and why?
Set over the course of four days, the story centers on Detective Inspector Kip Glaspie, who refuses to accept that the murder is a random act of senseless violence and becomes determined to discover if there is a darker truth. All the while, Jane Oliver, a compassionate vicar, struggles to conceal her affair with the only witness to the crime.
