During the Golden Calf-ceremony the real-life Michael de Jong picked up the award for Yorick van Wageningen. In his speech he thanked the cast & crew for "giving him back his life".
The filmmakers decided to not cast a actor to play the role of Maurice de Hond and instead only use archive footage. According to Dutch newspaper Het Parool, they did this so that De Hond couldn't retro-actively claim that he never made any of these statements.
In Op1 (2020) director Sander Burger explained that they had the rights to the book already back in 2010 but for 7 years no Dutch broadcaster wanted to commit to this film because of its critical nature.
For their role in this film, Fedja van Huêt and Yorick van Wageningen are the first winners of the Golden Calf (the Dutch National Film Award) for Best Leading Role and Best Supporting Role. Before 2021 the award was still split between actors and actresses.
In 2021 the Dutch Film Academy announced that they would make all their acting Golden Calf awards gender-neutral. In reaction to this, Yorick van Wageningen resigned from the Academy, citing his frustration that the Academy took this important decision without consulting its members, and because he felt that this new rule unfairly punished actors who had just survived the Corona crisis. That same year he won the Golden Calf for Best Supporting Role for his role in this film. Although he was abroad and missed the ceremony, he later called winning the award "incredibly cool".
