- JESSICA (JaMara Smith) stares at pictures and a copy of her husband's obituary as she silently grieves. The doorbell rings and interrupts her thoughts. She opens the door and SAM (Jermelle Simon) offers handyman services. She initially refuses him but then feels guilty. She accepts his offer and invites him back to do some work for her.
While shopping with her mom, Jessica gets frustrated as mom reminds her that John died and not her. Mom wants her to start living life again. Jessica gets offended and rushes out the store.
SAM (Jermelle Simon) eats dinner at Jessica's house as they get to know one another better. Jessica looks at her watch and realizes that it's getting late. She offers to take Sam home. He nervously refuses her ride but she insists.
They pull up to a house. Sam slowly gets out the car and walks up to the front door. He rings the doorbell, the light comes on and the door opens. Sam waves at Jessica and she drives off. Mr. George steps out on the porch and Sam makes up an excuse for knocking on the door so late. Sam leaves.
Jessica takes a picture of John with her to bed. She continues to grieve as she looks at his picture. She gets angry with John and becomes very emotional.
Then next night, Jessica takes a different route home and finds Sam sleeping on a bench. Sam reveals that he didn't make into the shelter in time to get a bed. Jessica takes Sam home with her.
Jessica prepares the guest room for Sam. Sam walks in wearing John's pajamas and the resemblance takes Jessica into a daze. Jessica questions Sam and he explains that he AGED OUT of foster care. Jessica leaves Sam in the room alone. He looks around the room and then goes to bed tightly holding his backpack to protect his belongings.
The next morning Jessica's brother, Richard, comes over and convinces Jessica that Sam can't stay with her because she may not be safe. Richard offers to pay for Sam to stay in a hotel for a week. Sam is offended and doesn't want Richard's help. Jessica convinces Sam to leave with Richard. A week later Sam sleeps outside with other homeless people.
Jessica visits with her dad when mom walks in with a gift for her. Dad excuses himself so that mom can talk to Jessica. Jessica feels guilty about letting Richard convince her to make Sam leave. Mom comforts her and empowers her to make her own decision about Sam.
Jessica goes back to the home where she dropped Sam off weeks ago and finds him cutting grass. She offers to help him and invites him to dinner to discuss it. Sam doesn't show up at Jessica's home for dinner and she feels defeated.
Sam sleeps outside on a bench that night. Two strange men approach Sam. He jumps up, leaves his bag and runs off.
The doorbell rings and wakes Jessica up. Initially, she wakes up, turns the light off and goes back to sleep. She hears the doorbell again. She jumps up and looks out the window to find Sam pacing on the porch. She rushes to the door. They embrace as Sam finally asks for her help.
A decade later, Sam sits at his desk as he counsels a young lady who has aged out of foster care. After he walks out of his office, he greets Jessica who he calls, "Mom." They both look happy and healthy as they head out for lunch.
