I believe this is one of the best written episodes.

I haven't completed the series. But this episode got to me. I never expected to be so emotional and cry, that too while watching a horror series. The slowly creeping scare factor, which worked brilliantly for the first 3 episodes wasn't compromised here. But it is Luke's sheer determination in resisting relapse that got me. Everyone has inner demons. People get addicted to things they won't ever to fight or in reality suppress these demons. But in the end, the persistent succeed. As so rightly said in the dinner scene, it is about doing the same thing again and again. It is that what leads to results. This episode was all the Therapy I needed. And yeah, the creepy tall guy with the stick is straight out of everyone's nightmares.

This has some incredible writing

From the perspective of writing in and of itself, of recovery, of general insight, of poetic view. This, in and of itself, as well as part of the series, is a good work. WAY beyond being part of a horror show. I loved the original HOHH, back in the day. But this, this is something else again.

Perfect episode in all aspects

Emotional troubles of Luke was portrayed beautifully by both Oliver Jackson and the child actor. Visuals were beyond words and the coldness Luke felt was passed to the audience amazingly well.

Another solid episode

Greetings from Lithuania.

"The Twin Thing", 4 th episode of "The Haunting of Hill House" wan't the best yet (this goes to previous amazing episode "Touch"), but still i really enjoyed this episode as well the show so far. This is not a straightforward horror fest, more its a family drama that went through some very disturbing things in a past and now in a present and past are facing these demons again - literally.

Overall, i like the pacing of this show, acting, great writing and directing. Very good series so far.

The stuff of nightmares

I really enjoyed the creepiness factor of this episode, with the floating tall man searching for his bowler hat, brilliantly done. Luke's story is probably the most engaging, except maybe for Nell. I'm not done with the series yet, but it has me hooked

The Twin Thing

Warning: Spoilers
This is without a doubt my favorite episode so far. I personally have a hard time watching movies and shows about addicts sometimes, being related to some, and I always feel for them in some way. This was beautifully written. I think Luke's story was very captivating and hard to stop watching. I honestly felt like a was watching an entirely different show. Hearing his speech while he's getting mugged, just for trying to help a friend, who also took advantage of him, was absolutely soul crushing.

As far as actual horror elements go, this one dealt for to me. I gave an earlier episode of this some criticism for its cheap CGI, but that floating guy and his hat was SO unsettling. I hated the hallway scene and I hated seeing him in the street just as much. Very unsettling and unfair to poor Luke.

This was a very well written episode of a series that continues to surprise me.

Inescapable trauma
snoozejonc22 October 2020
Whilst in rehab Luke tries to help another addict.

This episode focuses on the character of Luke and his time in a drug rehabilitation program and features a brilliant performance from Oliver Jackson-Cohen with excellent support from the other cast members.

I won't go in to plot details but theme of people being haunted by trauma runs strongly through the show and very much so in this episode as Luke's trauma literally follows him wherever he goes.

The parts of the plot set in the present are far more compelling than than the Hill House scenes which contain lots of horror movie style moments but don't reveal anything other than what image of childhood trauma Luke carries with him throughout life. This image is linked to a haunting opening monologue delivered by a blind Iraq veteran during a group session. Some of the scenes are almost up there with the substance abuse related dramatisations seen in The Wire and The Corner.

Visually it is as good as the first three episodes with atmospheric cinematography and superb editing, particularly during shifts between time periods. Some excellent transitions were achieved by sound-effects alone.

It finishes well, making you want to watch the next episode immediately (even if you do not have the time).

Every character's davelopment is great

This episode was hard to watch, it was so good, strong, sharp, emotional. Luke is one of the most interesting characters in this whole show, especially in this episode. Hope he'll find happiness and peace in other episodes if this even possible when you know this family situation.

The Twin Thing

Who would have thought that an episode about junkies and recovery from addiction would be the best yet?

That's what we got here. Of course there were the same spook moments, but this was more about the post-House storytelling.

Not perfect by any means, but enjoyable.

The rehab story of the blind guy with runny egg eyes girl he keeps seeing was pretty intense.

+1 Star for that scene

Luke leaves rehab to track down his friend who left it.

When Baby Luke wakes up to see floating hat man.....

+1 Star for the sequence, creepy

+1 Star for how over the course of the episode, they keep referring to 'The Twin Thing', where Luke and Nell often feel the same things, experience the same emotions ....

+1 Star for Like's performance in this episode... in an episode where everyone in his life has really abandoned him, maybe deservedly so, as he tries to get clean

+1 Star for at the end Steven and Page show up to get Luke, and Luke tells Steve that Nell's death 'wasn't' suicide.

Really great episode in all aspects. 10/10

LUKE ACTION, SOLID

I thought this episode was good, very solid. I didn't LOVE IT as much as the first couple episodes just because it took awhile to really be introduced to Luke. Overall, still SOLID tho, this story has really strong value.

S1.E4 - Luke's Episode [9/10]
panagiotis199318 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E4) My Live Reaction / Review for The Haunting of Hill House Season 1 Episode 4 ''The Twin Thing''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. This episode seems to focus on Luke. The previous episode focused on Theo. I like that. That super tall ghost is really creepy. Luke goes and steals Steven's stuff to sell them? That's one dysfunctional family. Luke seems to be very lonely, at least he has Joey. What happened to Joey? Did she leave or something happened to her? Luke keeps seeing the ghost with the hat, is it just his imagination? I feel bad for Luke, he seems miserable. Addiction sucks. Luke thinks that Nell's death wasnt suicide? Interesting. Overall this episode was good and I enjoyed it. My rating is 9/10.
