Superhero movies have surged in popularity over the past decades, with the MCU standing as one of the largest and most lucrative cinematic universes today. While many modern superhero films lean towards PG-13 ratings with action-packed thrills and intrigue, some embrace elements of horror and gore.
Fans on Ranker recently cast over 20K votes to determine their top superhero movie of all time, yielding results that may catch you off guard.
10. ‘Unbreakable’ (2000)
M. Night Shyamalan isn’t known for making superhero films, so when he released ‘Unbreakable,’ it was a surprising departure. Even more surprising was its quality, leading to a trilogy of unconventional superhero movies. The film eschews conventional horror, focusing instead on psychological depth.

‘Glass’ marks the unexpected third installment in Shyamalan’s franchise, which he never originally intended to expand into a trilogy. Similar to its predecessors, ‘Glass’ is often categorized as a horror movie, focusing...

Superhero movies have risen to prominence in the last decades, and currently, the MCU is one of the most profitable and biggest cinematic universes to date. As production continues on the second season of Peacemaker, we have word on two new additions to the cast of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad spin-off series.
THR reports that Picard's Sol Rodriguez and The Office actor David Denman have both signed on in supporting roles, and at least one of them will play an established DC Comics character.
While details on Denman's role are being kept under wraps, Rodriguez has been cast as Sasha Bordeaux, who made her debut as a Batman ally back in 2000’s Detective Comics No. 751.
First introduced as a young martial artist who is hired as Bruce Wayne's bodyguard by Lucius Fox, The Dark Knight actually trained Bordeaux as his new apprentice before she was framed for the murder of Vesper Fairchild and sent to prison. She later joined forces with the government agency known as Checkmate.

Kenneth Huang was known for his particular taste in wine. Whether in his favorite corner of Cut, the Michelin-starred steakhouse at the Beverly Wilshire, or in the Peninsula Shanghai, Huang would summon a bottle of Opus One to the table. He would tell guests that he had a private reserve of the Napa Valley vineyard’s 2011 vintage, which retails for up to $2,000 a case. Someone who regularly dined with the financier says she drank so much Opus One that she got sick of the bourgeois Bordeaux.
If the wine was Huang’s signature, it was a footnote in a picture rendered to create a specific impression. An outsider in a town familiar with cautionary tales about Chinese riches, Huang was performative about his wealth in a way that put Hollywood power players at ease. He would allow them to think: if this man puts studio executives on private jets to...

Zack Snyder made fans very happy when he announced that he is very much interested in finishing his Justice League trilogy. After his tumultuous experience with the 2017 film and the long-overdue Snyder Cut, the filmmaker is now ready to tackle the matter.
Justice League (2017)
After the release of his Netflix original project Rebel Moon, Snyder has now a way to turn his plan to continue the Justice League story, albeit with slight differences in format and storyline. As Warner Bros is very strict with the rights of DC characters, the director would have to be very creative.

During an interview with Empire Magazine via Screen Rant, director Zack Snyder was asked if he would love the idea of finishing Justice League 2 and 3 through animation. As there are no confirmed reports yet regarding this speculation, Snyder was very confident to say:

What if Superman had turned out to be evil? That was the idea explored by director David Yarovesky’s super-powered horror film Brightburn, which was released back in 2019. Even though the movie made under $33 million at the global box office, the budget was low enough (somewhere in the range of 6 to 12 million) that producer James Gunn said they were talking about a sequel just a couple months after the film reached screens. Then we went a long time with no mentions of Brightburn 2 – until production company The H Collective, which was also behind Brightburn, confirmed that a sequel was in development last September. Things got confusing last month when Gunn took to Threads to say there are “no plans at all” for a Brightburn 2 right now… but Gunn has cleared up some of the confusion by revealing that a sequel is unlikely due to a complicated rights situation.

Matthew Macfadyen joins ‘The Miniature Wife’ (Photo Credit Josh Wool)
Two-time Emmy winner Matthew Macfadyen is following up his incredible run as Tom Wambsgans in HBO’s critically acclaimed Succession with a starring role in The Miniature Wife. Emmy nominee Elizabeth Banks is also on board to star in the series, and both Banks and Macfadyen will serve as executive producers.
The series, described as a romantic dramedy, was just given a straight-to-series order by Peacock.
“The Miniature Wife, based on the short story written by Manuel Gonzalez, is a high-concept marital dramedy examining the power (im)balances between spouses, Lindy (Elizabeth Banks) and Les (Matthew Macfadyen), who battle each other for supremacy after a technological accident induces the ultimate relationship crisis,” reads Peacock’s synopsis.
Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner (Boardwalk Empire) created the dramedy and will guide the series as showrunners and executive producers. Additional executive producers include Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer.

A sequel to 2019’s Brightburn may be glowing yet again, as word has emerged that the production company behind the James Gunn-produced movie is moving forward with another installment.
As per Deadline, The H Collective – which produced Brightburn – is launching a new label called H3 Entertainment, which “intends to incorporate new technology into the production process of projects it has in development, including a sequel to horror movie Brightburn.” Such technology includes the use of artificial intelligence, Metaverse and Web3.
While the idea of using artificial intelligence and the like may put off some moviegoers, the company has assured that they will aim to “respect professionals and fans while promoting responsible technology integration.” In a time when artificial intelligence has done its part to slow down the movie industry with both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA striking, this is certainly a bold announcement to make, even if it does signal...

Brightburn, the 2019 superhero horror film produced by James Gunn, is getting a sequel. The film, which put a dark twist on Superman’s origin story, followed a young boy named Brandon who crash-landed on Earth from another planet and discovered he had superpowers. However, instead of using them for good, he became a violent and murderous supervillain.
The film was a modest success at the box office, earning $32 million on a small budget, and received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. However, it also sparked interest in the potential of a cinematic universe of evil superheroes, as the post-credits scene hinted at the existence of other super-powered beings who were terrorizing the world, such as evil versions of Aquaman and Wonder Woman.

Harry Bosch is returning to Amazon Freevee on Oct. 20 – and he’s taking matters into his own hands to save his daughter in a new teaser for “Bosch: Legacy” Season 2.

This article contains spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
The "Guardians of the Galaxy" films are without a doubt the most aesthetically diverse entries within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Far from being just another superhero saga, the films blend elements of comic-book-style derring-do, soap opera, space opera, action-adventure, and character-based melodrama.
But one particular element that writer/director James Gunn has continually brought to all three "Guardians" films is horror. For those not particularly well-versed in the genre, the horrific aspects of the "Guardians" movies may simply seem "edgy," but to those who are aware of Gunn's horror-soaked past as a filmmaker, these elements stick out like a big, fleshy tentacle.
The latest installment of the saga, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," is no exception to showcasing Gunn's horror roots. On the contrary; it may be the goopiest, most intense, upsetting, and transgressive of all the "Guardians" movies,...

In his career, James Gunn has written or directed eight superhero-based movies and TV shows. Early on, Gunn seemed eager to deconstruct the world of superheroes with their petty, human qualities (as in "The Specials") or the dark side of their devotion to violence (as in "Super"). As his career has continued, however, Gunn's work has become more earnest, and he has altered his focus toward quirky, violent characters who, now, possess a great deal of warmth and vulnerability. For example, his first "Guardians of the Galaxy" film from 2014 was presented as the "bad boy" off-shoot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring characters that were stranger and less brazenly heroic than their Earthbound counterparts. But, despite their oddness, the PG-13-rated film had little interest in glorifying their outsider status, instead presenting them as an ersatz family, each one marked by trauma and abuse. Many of the film's fans responded to the Guardians' unabashed sentimentality,...

Complicated family dynamics are a focal point for a lot of blockbuster entertainment. We all want to feel like we belong. Whether your own family is dysfunctional or healthy and supportive, I think it's just human nature to be drawn to the idea of being accepted and having a place in this world to call your own.
Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy is very much a story about family, both biological and adopted. I haven't seen Vol. 3 yet, but it's clear to see from the first two films that James Gunn keeps returning to that theme with these characters -- and if Vol. 2 is anything to go by, it feels like he's coming to the conclusion that found family is just as valuable and maybe even a little more trustworthy than the one you're born into.

Director James Gunn, over the course of his career, has taken a long and circuitous path through the superhero genre. Back in 2000, he wrote the screenplay for a low-budget superhero film called "The Specials," which saw superheroes on their day off. It seems that a lot of them were less noble and far greedier than one might assume. A decade later, Gunn was still deconstructing superhero tropes with his aggressively depressing film "Super," a film that linked superhero instincts to violent madness. It was very curious, then, that 2013 should bring him to "Guardians of the Galaxy," a PG-13-rated chapter in the high-profile, ultra-safe Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gunn replaced danger with sentimentality, while retaining his off-kilter sense of humor. "Guardians" became deeply beloved.

Regardless of your interest in a movie about Pooh Bear and Piglet slaughtering scantily-clad hot tub enjoyers, there’s no denying that Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey offers a compelling look at the future of storytelling. For decades, the Walt Disney Corporation has controlled stories about Pooh and the gang from the Hundred Acre Wood, overtaking in the public consciousness even depictions by the characters’ creators A.A. You know those directors you keep rooting for, even though they've yet to really knock one out of the park? That's Elizabeth Banks for me at this stage in her career behind the camera. Her first two times at bat, on "Pitch Perfect 2" and the 2019 "Charlie's Angels," provide fun-if-hollow female empowerment, though that's more to do with their energetic performances than their direction, which tends to be flat and lacking for flair.
Luckily, Banks' next outing as a director, "Cocaine Bear," is the perfect chance for her to turn on the juice and see what shakes loose. Will it be the next "Snakes on a Plane," i.e. a very R-rated comedy-thriller that couldn't quite live up to its outlandish title and capitalize on the sheer hype it generated among the Very Online demographic, or will it be a riotous good time that doubles as a searing indictment of...

With Elizabeth Banks' third film as director, "Cocaine Bear," coming in February (and her first that is not attached to an existing franchise), she may finally have the right source material to demonstrate her directing prowess. Comedy, horror, and a certain level of absurdism have been recurring themes across all her acting roles and make her uniquely qualified to adapt the true story that inspired the script.
Admittedly, there's fair reason to go into this next movie with tempered expectations. Banks' 2019 film "Charlie's Angels" was ruled as "empty but endearingly fun" by /Film and designated among that year's biggest box office flops by Variety, while "Pitch Perfect 2" — as a faithful continuation of the first — did not allow Banks much opportunity to add a signature touch.

Before announcing his role in writing a new "Superman" movie, James Gunn had already eviscerated the Superman concept in 2019. Produced by Gunn, "Brightburn" followed Brandon, a young superpowered being whose alien pod crash-landed in Brightburn, Kansas, before being subsequently adopted as a baby by the Breyer family. His Superman-like abilities included impenetrable skin, flight, increased strength, and, of course, heat vision. However, unlike his DC Comics counterpart, Brandon grew up to be a pretty terrible child that wanted to rule the world instead of saving it. Brightburn was an ultra-violent menace to society, sporting a red mask designed by the filmmaker to sit alongside other, classic horror designs.
Not only was "Brightburn" the ultimate antithesis of the classic Superman story we know and love, but it nose-dived into horror without looking back. In addition to sporting some very gory, bloody action, Brighburn is positioned by the filmmakers as a horror figure,...

DC Studios dropped one hell of an announcement this week when it was made public that James Gunn was hard at work on a new "Superman" film, specifically a movie centered on a younger version of the character than previously seen in the Dceu. It's an exciting time to be a fan of DC, because after the success of "The Suicide Squad," the refreshing spin-off series, "Peacemaker," and his "Guardians of the Galaxy" work over at Marvel, Gunn has more than proven he's exactly what Warner Bros. needs to usher in the new era of superhero entertainment. Most are familiar with Gunn's pre-Marvel/DC work on horror films like "Tromeo and Juliet," "Slither," "Dawn of the Dead," and the live-action "Scooby-Doo" movies, but Gunn has been making superhero films outside of the two major companies for a very long time.

Jason Momoa and John Cena are set to share the screen in a new movie. Both actors have been cast in an action-comedy film called "Killer Vacation," per Variety. The script for "Killer Vacation" will be written by Mark and Brian Gunn, who also wrote the script for Dwayne Johnson's "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" and "Brightburn." Specific details about the plot remain under wraps, but we do know it's set to be a blend of action and comedy, and sources told Variety that Cena and Momoa were inspired to work together after discovering their "natural chemistry" on the set of the final Fast & Furious movies. Reps for both actors did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment.

John Cena and Jason Momoa are partnering up to star in “Killer Vacation,” a new action-comedy in the works at Warner Bros.
Though plot details are being kept under wraps, one can probably expect a rowdy adventure in the vein of the blockbusters for which both are known. Cena headlined HBO Max’s “Peacemaker” series, a spinoff of his character in 2021’s “The Suicide Squad.”
Momoa has starred as Aquaman in a handful of movies and television series, most recently making a cameo at the end of “Peacemaker.” Other than that brief exchange, the actors have never shared the screen together.
Mark and Brian Gunn, the team behind the Dwayne Johnson-starring “Journey 2: Mysterious Island” and “Brightburn” will collaborate on the script. A director has not been named.

Exclusive: Filmmaker David E. Talbert and his wife and producing partner Lyn Sisson-Talbert have appointed veteran entertainment exec Jim Miller as Head of Film at their production company Golden Alchemy Entertainment, at the same time bringing on Tessie Goodrich as Vice President of Development.
Golden Alchemy’s new hirings follow the Talberts’ signing of a multi-year first-look deal with Netflix for Talbert to write and direct and for the company to produce event films for the streamer. The Talberts closed the deal last year following the success of their Netflix film Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, which marked the streamer’s first-ever original live-action musical. The duo produced the movie, with David also directing from his own script.
“Through our partnership with Netflix and with the help of Jim and Tessie, we’re thankful for the opportunity to continue to put fantasy and feel-good entertainment into the world,” said the Talberts in a joint statement.

As we look out into the great black emptiness of space, we are reminded of the question posed by the Italian physicist, Enrico Fermi- “Where is everybody?” Is life as we understand it a freak chemical fluke, never to be repeated in all of the great cold infinity above us? Or is it in fact an inevitable outcome of a relatively common set of circumstances, resulting in a universe teeming with life and civilisations, and if so, will we ever get to meet them?
And if and when we do encounter life that evolved under another sun, with intelligence different, yet equal to our own, how do we kill it?
Yes, some films tell us that when we encounter new life and civilizations they’ll heal our wounds with magic glowing fingers, teach us that nuclear war is bad, and misunderstand our local customs in a delightful and heartwarming way.

Elizabeth Banks got in touch with her sultry side as she lay in the sand for a fun beach snap. Pic credit: ©ImageCollect.com/Birdie Thompson/Admedia
Elizabeth Banks got some time in the California sunshine as she appeared to be throwing it back to an earlier time in the summer.
The 48-year-old actress of hits such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Brightburn, and Hunger Games laid out on the sandy beach somewhere in the Golden State, stretching out on the shore while fully clothed.
Getting a little wet from the lapping tides that had moistened the turf, Elizabeth invoked some pin-up girl vibes as she posed belly-down while pushing up her torso with her elbows which rested on the seashore around her.
Leaving her blonde hair tousled and mussed up in a perfect beachy-waves look, Elizabeth let some strands get tangled up in her hands as she cupped her palms by her open mouth.

In 2019, David Yarovesky introduced the world to a unique scenario: What if Superman was evil? Now, the thought of a villainess Superman has been explored in comics numerous times. The caped crusader has also been portrayed as the bad guy in different forms of media as well, most notably in the video game, Injustice 2. However, the idea of Superman being the villain in a live-action film is certainly fresh and intriguing. However, the problem with Brightburn is that the film ends up being a run-of-the-mill slasher flick. As a whole, Brightburn was a solid film outing, but it’s

Director Eskil Vogt is having quite the year. Releasing two movies that have received plaudits by pretty much everyone that has seen them. The first, The Worst Person in the World and this, his second, The Innocents.
There have been a few movies in the last few years that have tried to blend sci-fi, horror and superhero genres. Perhaps the most well known came in the form of Brightburn. A surprisingly brutal movie that lead with the premise of ‘what if Superman was evil?’. Personally, I really enjoyed the indie movie Freaks, which had this awesome dark sci-fi vibe and was full of surprises. So The Innocents isn’t completely original in its thinking but it still stands out with its own ideas and quality.

Ahead of its August 6th release in theaters, IMAX, and HBO Max via Warner Bros., James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is teased in a new trailer packed with superpowered mayhem.
"From writer/director James Gunn comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ superhero action adventure “The Suicide Squad,” featuring a collection of the most degenerate delinquents in the DC lineup.
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with...

In “Darkness by Day,” Argentine Martin Desalvo‘s 2013 breakthrough, a reported rabies outbreak gradually creeps nearer to two women cousins, stuck in their isolated family home. Violence will let reign, but for most of its going, Desalvo seems more interested on building tension and the relationship between the two women.
Eight years later, Desalvo returns with “El Ciego,” another mix of suspense drama, horror beats and character study. Juana, mid-teens, tends a charcoal pit with her drunk, morose father Rubén, and by night slips out to attend house parties with her rap loving friends. One day, she stumbles on El Ciego, a forbidden thicket which, superstition has it, reveal dark secrets. Anybody who enters, moreover, will get lost forever. After penetrating El Ciego, Juana becomes obsessed with knowing more about her mother who died mysteriously when she was a child.
In other hands, this could have become a whodunnit. Desalvo...
