A videotape renting tale
guisreis31 May 2021
Nice independent film on the history of videotape renting in São Paulo. Not all interviews (mostly with the pioneer businessmen of the branch) are excellent, but, taken together, they do bring spectator back to the past and its homevideo experience memories. TV footage is also a good source used by the filmmaker. Amusing stories emerge and important information is compiled. It is interesting to notice that the very same film piracy that gave rise to videotape renting market also caused its crisis (firstly through videotape copying) and breakdown (ultimately due internet). In the documentary, vintage animation is used to divide interview sections, reminding the beginning of computer-made animated vídeos; it was a nice solution for the lack of a higher budget. Some image distortions since the very beginning also contribute to the vintage videotape atmosphere.
