Jack Ryan and Wednesday Addams both stepped aside this week, as two new entries topped Nielsen’s latest U.S. ranking of streaming originals.

Judging by the Nielsen streaming rankings, Americans spent a lot of time watching movies in the final week of 2022.
Netflix’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery recorded the biggest single week in the two-plus year history of Nielsen’s weekly rankings, and four other films also had at least 500 million minutes of viewing time. Jack Ryan repeated as the top original series, and Yellowstone had its biggest streaming week to date on Peacock.
Glass Onion had 2.89 billion minutes of viewing time for the week of Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, up from 2.23 billion for its debut weekend. That’s equivalent to 20.76 million full showings of the 139-minute film and the highest viewing time ever for a feature film in the Nielsen rankings. (Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney+ was the previous record holder with 2.73 billion minutes for its opening week.)

While Jack Ryan and Wednesday Addams stayed put atop Nielsen’s latest U.S. ranking of streaming originals, the big headline is that Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery set a record over on the movies chart.
For the week of Dec. 26, Glass Onion amassed 2.9 billion viewing minutes, up 30 percent from its opening weekend to set a record as the most-streamed movie in a measurement week since Nielsen began tracking streaming content. It also thus was No. 1 on the overall streaming ranking, easily besting Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Speaking of whom….

The return of Jack Ryan to Amazon’s Prime Video pushed Wednesday out of the top spot on the streaming series rankings. Netflix’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery also had a big premiere, and Peacock landed its first original series in the top 10 the week before Christmas.
Jack Ryan, whose third season premiered all at once Dec. 21, led all series for the Dec. 19-25 frame, with just under 1.9 billion minutes of viewing. That was good enough to edge out Wednesday (1.8 billion minutes), which had a four-week run as the top series title in Nielsen’s rankings.
Both shows, however, came in behind Glass Onion, whose 2.23 billion minutes of watch time — equivalent to about 16 million full runs of the Rian Johnson-directed film — led all titles. The movie did all of its business in the last three days of the week, as it made its Netflix debut Dec. 23. It...

I Am a Killer is now in its fourth season. A doc-series that puts death row inmates on center stage. The inmates chronicle their lives, to ultimately revisit what led them to commit the murders. Witnesses, family members to the victims and advocates alike are also interviewed.
A series that is right up the alley of true crime fans.
In six episodes real life crimes are analyzed, and relayed using archive and found footage, as well as interviews with the convicted murderers.
‘I Am A Killer’ is considered one of the best doc-series in the true crime genre, as it goes above and beyond the sordid details, which true enough, it does cover, but it also covers the narratives of the people involved in the terrible tragedies it addresses.
Episode List – Season 4 of ‘I Am A Killer” Family Matters
A murderer recounts the crime that ended one life and ruined his own.

The big-budget The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power had a big opening weekend on Nielsen’s SVOD charts, outdrawing House of the Dragon among streaming users. It was not, however, the biggest opening ever for Amazon’s Prime Video in terms of total viewing time.
The Rings of Power captured 1.25 billion minutes of viewing time following its Sept. 1 premiere in the U.S., the only streaming title to top a billion minutes for the week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, meanwhile, ticked up week-to-week with 781 million minutes on HBO Max (the latter’s total doesn’t include viewing on HBO’s linear channels, which accounts for a significant portion of its overall audience).

The success of monster hits such as Squid Game, Netflix’s most popular series ever, as well as Money Heist, All of Us Are Dead, Elite and Lupin, has proven that there is no language barrier for non-English-language series to become global phenoms.
There has been more evidence of that over the last couple of weeks. After the latest Korean breakout, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, edged The Sandman to log the most viewed hours for any series — English or non-English language — for the week of Aug. 15, this past week two non-English-language show, Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Mexican drama High Heat, were the most watched Netflix series around the world with 48.8 million and 44.1 million hours viewed, respectively.
Top English-language performer, mystery limited series Echoes, starring Michelle Monaghan, came in third overall with 36.6M hours viewed.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo extended its impressive streak at the top of the non-English language Netflix weekly rankings.

Exclusive: Ultimate Tag producer Znak & Co is making a three-part true-crime documentary series for Netflix and Sky.
The streamer and the British pay-tv service have teamed up for a series about the story of Dale Wayne Sigler who was sentenced to death thirty years ago for a cold-blooded murder he admitted to committing.
Shot on location in Texas and produced over a three-year period, the series will follow Sigler, after spending more than half of his life behind bars, as he released back into the world. It will tell his story as he is released into the custody of Carole, the 70-year-old prison pen pal he barely knows. As Sigler begins to adjust on the outside, he addresses the life he took as well as the one he lost and reveals his true motive for committing the brutal crime, which is shockingly different to the reason the world always believed.

The popularity of shows like Making a Murderer, The Staircase, and I Am a Killer prove that people can't help but be fascinated with all things true crime. Netflix is adding more fuel to the flames of this particular fascination with its new docuseries, The Innocent Man, based on John Grisham's 2006 nonfiction book, The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town.
The story follows two murders that rocked the small town of Ada, Ok, in the 1980s, and the controversial chain of events that took place in their wake. The six-part documentary includes interviews with everyone involved on the case - including the victims' friends and families, other residents of Ada, Innocence Project co-director Barry Scheck, and Grisham, who also serves as an executive producer - with archival video and photos. Did the four men who confessed to the grisly murders of two women actually do the deed,...

Netflix has long been a safe-haven from advertising, but it's possible those days could be at an end. This news comes on the heels of a Reddit user from the U.K. telling the following story about a recent Netflix watch session that was interrupted by an unskippable ad for Better Call Saul:

Netflix is known for giving us haunting shows like The Keepers and The Staircase, and the streaming giant has released yet another true crime docuseries - this time a 10-part British anthology about death row inmates called I Am a Killer. In each hour-long episode, the crew meets with a different prisoner to get a closer look at their stories. The third episode is one of the most tragic and frustrating of the show, unpacking the case of an inmate named Justin Dickens, who, at age 17, killed Allen Carter, a schoolteacher. The episode's narrative arc puts viewers in constant tension. It asks whether or not his death row sentence was fair, given Dickens' dysfunctional upbringing and the prosecution's interpretation of the evidence.
Dickens's Life Before the Murder
Dickens grew up in Amarillo, TX, with a tough childhood. His mother fell into drug addiction, which led him to be born two months premature.

Leave it to Netflix to gift us another true crime series we can't stop watching. On Aug. 3, the streaming service debuted a British anthology called I Am a Killer, and we have not been the same since. The joint production between Netflix and A+E Networks UK is a series of 10 hour-long episodes, each detailing the story of a different inmate. In episode four, "Sympathy For the Devil," the show interviews convicted killer Miguel Angel Martinez, the youngest person ever on death row in Texas - here's his story.
The Backstory
Growing up, Martinez said his life was pretty similar to most teenagers: going out, going to parties, etc. On one afternoon he went to hang out with his school acquaintances, Miguel Venegas and Milo Flores. The three played video games, drank, and smoked weed, until Venegas decided he wanted to break into a stranger's house and do some damage.

It just debuted Aug. 3, but Netflix's new, brutal reality series I Am a Killer has already received a lot of online buzz. A joint production between Netflix and A+E Networks UK, I Am a Killer takes a cue from reality-crime hits like The Jinx and Making a Murderer, but the new show has true-crime fans hooked because of its unique angle: each episode profiles a different killer on death row. In filmed interviews, the convicts discuss the events leading up to the crime, the crime itself, and how they feel about it now.
The show is a must for true crime fans, but is it a big enough hit for there to be a season two?
Nothing is definite right now, with execs staying mum on a second season. But the fact that Netflix ordered second seasons of the similarly themed shows Making a Murderer and Mindhunter, another...
