Stuart Ford’s AGC Television has boarded the series adaptation of F.G. Haghenbeck’s novel, ‘Primavera del Mal’ (‘The Spring of Evil’) alongside Mexican-American filmmaker Fernando Lebrija of Cielo Content and Irreversible Pictures.
To be retitled “Amapola,” the upcoming historical drama series is set in the early 20th century when the Chinese held sway over the drug trade along the Mexican-u.S. border.
In the world of illicit trade, adopted siblings Raul Duval and Miguel Ying have successfully grown their family’s opium enterprise. Their ambitions now extend beyond mere cultivation as they seek to broaden their reach and increase their political influence. However, their aspirations take an unexpected turn when American mobster Bugsy Siegel arrives in Mexico City, offering them a golden opportunity.
Situated strategically between Nogales, Mexico, and Tucson, Arizona, the Ying family steers their course through the treacherous waters of the drug trade bridging Mexico and the U.

“Those About to Die,” AGC Television’s upcoming gladiator series from Roland Emmerich, stars Anthony Hopkins and boasts a cast drawn from across Europe and the Middle East. It’s also financially innovative.
Rather than rely on a single, deep-pocketed streamer to write the check for the pricey series, budgeted at $145 million for the first season, AGC adopted a split rights structure: U.S. rights are licensed to Peacock, European rights to Hep, the Herbert Kloiber Sr./Constantin joint venture, and AGC International distributing in the rest of the world.
AGC chairman and CEO Stuart Ford takes pride in proving the naysayers wrong with financing for the project set in ancient Rome and based on Daniel P. Mannix’s book of the same name.

You could, rightly, characterize director Bryan Fogel’s Academy Award-winning documentary “Icarus” as the product of dumb luck. It began as one film — a “Super Size Me”-type concept whereby Fogel, a cycling enthusiast, attempted to expose the ease of illegal doping by injecting himself with steroids — that became an arresting investigation into Russia’s decades-long use of performance-enhancing drugs, with the colorful Grigory Rodchenkov, head of the country’s anti-doping laboratory, as the primary whistleblower. With Rodchenkov’s testimony, Fogel made the pervasive rot of Russian sports into an enthralling piece of storytelling.
And yet, despite its envelope-pushing search for the truth, “Icarus” ended as almost all documentaries do: The audience’s eyes are opened and the subject who did the revealing fades into the background. Toward the end of the film, Rodchenkov’s lawyer, Jim Walden, appears to explain that his client is now in hiding, dodging the Russian government’s hit squads.

“Fahrenheit 11/9” producers and Academy Award nominees Carl Deal and Tia Lessin (“Trouble the Water”) are developing a documentary that explores the world of climate profiteering and how the planet’s wealthiest are planning to weather the uncertain century ahead.
The duo will be pitching their project during Cph:forum, the international financing and co-production event held during the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival (Cph:dox), which runs March 21-April 3.
“Sink or $wim” is inspired by journalist McKenzie Funk’s bestseller “Windfall: The Booming Business of Global Warming,” which details how a growing legion of corporations, high-stakes gamblers and entrepreneurs are cashing in on the climate crisis.
“We’ve all seen a lot of movies about climate change. And there are a lot of movies that offer solutions,” Deal tells Variety. “We think it’s time to tell a new kind of climate story, to take an audience on a rollicking journey...

Filmmaker Michael Moore is being sued by a fellow Flint, Michigan businessman who says Moore used a video he owned as part of the 2018 documentary “Fahrenheit 11/9.”
In the lawsuit, Darick Clemons says that he shot cell phone video of then-President Barack Obama visiting Flint in 2016. Clemons says he uploaded that video to YouTube and subsequently copyrighted the video earlier this year.
According to Clemons, Moore used that video in “Fahrenheit 11/9” without permission.
“Plaintiff’s on-the-ground footage gave Defendants a unique, boots-on-the-ground perspective on the presidential visit,” the lawsuit states. “Plaintiff’s choice of words, his race, and his anticipation of the event provided dramatic value for the story Mr. Moore told in the film. Defendants could not have obtained that perspective from any other source, and it certainly contributed to any success the film had.”

As President Donald Trump flew away from the White House this morning for the final time, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore gave him a parting jab on Twitter. “He has just left the White House for good,” the Oscar winner wrote. “We the people have evicted him. I will go ahead & cancel the U-Haul. He now flies over the wreckage he has created, knowing we are not done with him,” Michael Moore said. “Trial. Conviction. Imprisonment. He must pay for his actions – a first-ever for him.”
The U.S. Senate is expected to hold a speedy impeachment trial soon for Trump, even though he has left office, the ultimate result of which could see the former Potus being blocked from running for the nation’s top office again. Senate leaders Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell met Tuesday about laying ground rules for a 50-50 chamber split.

Filmmaker Michael Moore said a recent Associated Press report that Michigan’s former governor, Rick Snyder, will be charged for his role in the Flint water crisis has made him hopeful that “justice is happening” for the Flint community.
“Our longtime demands may have finally been met!” Moore said in a Facebook post on Tuesday. “Let’s hope justice is happening. This was a race crime — and once they learned the extent of the human damage they had done, they covered it up. Throw away the key.”
Moore, who is from Flint, has made several documentary films about the Michigan city; his 2018 film “Fahrenheit 11/9” also took a look at the Flint water scandal and was critical of Snyder’s handling of the crisis.
The charges against Snyder are not immediately clear, but the attorney general’s office has contacted the former officials’ defense attorneys to notify them of the indictments,...

Rudy Giuliani is already the favorite to win something this election season – a Razzie for ‘Borat 2’
Rudy Giuliani is going to be a big winner this year. Forget about the looming 2020 US presidential election, as there’s a more fascinating contest on the horizon, at the 41st Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies, which honor the worst the film industry has to offer each year. This is not Russian disinformation and it is not “fake news.”
The former New York City mayor, once known heroically as “America’s Mayor” in the wake of 9/11, has been a consistent fixture on TV over the last few years in both his capacity as a vocal GOP surrogate and personal attorney for President Donald Trump. Earlier this year Giuliani hit peak notoriety as a central figure in the Ukraine scandal that led to the President’s impeachment by Congress.

When Bryan Fogel premiered his new, politically charged documentary “The Dissident” at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, he called on potential buyers to “stand up to Saudi Arabia” and show their support for freedom of speech.
Now, nearly eight months after it debuted to strong reviews, “The Dissident” has found its distributor in Briarcliff Entertainment. The film entered Sundance as one of the hotter acquisition targets due largely to the fact that Fogel won an Oscar for his most recent effort, the Russian doping documentary “Icarus.” The extended wait for a deal and the relatively low profile of the buyer, a newbie in the indie film space, may indicate that more established studios were wary of touching a film that probes the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. According to the CIA, the Washington Post journalist was reportedly killed and dismembered at the order of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman...

Michael Moore interrupted hosting duties at his 15th annual Traverse City Film Festival in Michigan to make a bold suggestion about the 2020 presidential race: He urged former first lady Michelle Obama to jump into the ring and predicted that if she did, she would trounce Donald Trump.

She would crush him,” Moore told Deadline on Thursday morning, just before he stepped onstage for a panel at the festival and after suggesting the same thing Wednesday to Brian Williams on MSNBC’s The Eleventh Hour following the Democratic debate in Detroit. “It’s clear that Michelle Obama is a beloved person. The 39th annual Razzie Awards hat-tipping the year’s not-so-great in movies are in, with Sony’s Sherlock Holmes parody Holmes & Watson, Melissa McCarthy’s turns in two movies not her Oscar-nominated one in Can You Ever Forgive Me? and even President Donald Trump among those getting dinged by the group.
Holmes & Watson, which bowed in December, was especially razzed, named the year’s Worst Picture, Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel, Worst Director for Etan Cohen and Worst Supporting Actor for John C. Reilly.
Star Will Ferrell apparently was snubbed by Trump, who took Worst Actor for playing himself in archival footage of documentaries Death of a Nation and Fahrenheit 11/9. Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway also got swiped in this year’s final voting.

So who were the big winners — or losers, if you will? Watch the complete Razzies announcement video above, and scroll down to see the complete list of nominees and winners below.
Will Ferrell and John C. Don't think we forgot about the Razzie Awards. In the middle of all the excitement for the 2019 Oscars, nominations were announced for another show that determines who had the worst year on Hollywood's big screen! And, by the looks of it, competition is high. Melissa McCarthy is up against Tyler Perry for The Razzie Redeemer Award, for their performances in Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Vice respectively. Kellyanne Conway was nominated for playing herself in Michael Moore's documentary Fahrenheit 11/9 while Jamie Foxx will battle rapper Ludacris to see who the year's Worst Supporting Actor was. May the odds be ever in their favor. But...

The Razzies are back in the politics game. They “awarded” President George W. Bush and his staff when they were featured in a — shall we say — unflattering light in Michael Moore‘s documentary “Fahrenheit 9/11” (2004). Now the current leader of the tweet world, Donald Trump, is in the Golden Raspberries’ cross-hairs. He’s nominated twice this year, so how many will he win when the awards are presented on February 23? What’s funny is that these wouldn’t even be his first Razzies. Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Trump is nominated for Worst Actor for “Death of a Nation,” Dinesh D’Souza‘s so-called documentary that compares Trump to Abraham Lincoln, as well as for Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 11/9,” which takes the temperature of current American politics in the context of Trump’s presidency. The Cinema Audio Society Awards put us on notice that “A Star is Born” may not be the Academy Awards frontrunner for Best Sound Mixing that we think it is. Bradley Cooper‘s remake of this Hollywood classic lost to its main Oscar rival, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” at these precursor prizes on Saturday (February 16).
This musical biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury also bested two of the other Oscar nominees — “Black Panther” and “First Man.” The fifth Cas contender was “A Quiet Place,” which was snubbed by the sound branch of the academy in favor of “Roma.”
“Isle of Dogs” won for best sound mixing in an animated feature over “The Grinch,” “The Incredibles 2,”“Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” And the documentary feature went to “Free Solo” over “Fahrenheit 11/9,” “Quincy” and two films directed by Morgan Neville, “They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead” and...

Turner confirmed Thursday that TBS’ planned reboot of Michael Moore’s docuseries TV Nation is not going forward. That puts an end for now to the project, which TNT originally greenlighted and announced during the May 2017 upfronts. At the time the series was to be called Michael Moore Live From the Apocalypse.
A Turner spokesperson told Deadline today the scheduling never worked out with Moore. Since the series was announced, he mounted a one-man Broadway show, the anti-Donald Trump play The Terms of My Surrender, which opened in July 2017 and closed after three months; and he made and released the feature documentary Fahrenheit 11/9, the follow-up to his Oscar-winning Fahrenheit 9/11, this past September.
The reboot originally was eyeing a late-fall 217 premiere and was to be reminiscent of those TV Nation days (that nonfiction series won an Emmy in 2005) combining documentary and Moore’s comedic satire. The new show was...

Turner is not going forward with its revival of Michael Moore’s “TV Nation,” the network confirmed to TheWrap.
The decision to scrap “TV Nation” was due to the fact that Moore didn’t have time because of his other projects, according to Turner rep, including his latest film, “Fahrenheit 11/9,” which was released last fall.
The planned revival, which was initially called “Live from the Apocalypse,” was announced in 2017. It was first slated for TNT before being shifted over to TBS, and was renamed “TV Nation,” the same title as Moore’s satirical news magazine that ran on NBC from 1994 to 1995.

Turner has halted its long-gestating plans to revive Michael Moore’s landmark series “TV Nation.” The show, first announced in 2017 as a series order, had been pushed back several times but never received an official premiere date.
Moore had hoped to get “Michael Moore’s TV Nation” on the air this past October, in time for the midterm elections. TBS had even released a teaser promo for the show this summer, but has been quiet about “TV Nation” ever since. The show doesn’t appear on its website.
According to insiders, the decision to scrap “TV Nation” came due to Moore’s commitments to other projects, leaving him with little time to focus on the TBS show. “TV Nation” was originally set to be Moore’s first regular TV series since “The Awful Truth” went off the air in 2000. It was originally greenlighted in 2017 as “Live from the Apocalypse” and developed for TNT.

Yes, Donald Trump will probably win the Razzie Award for Worst Actor of the Year, according to the latest predictions at Gold Derby, but take heart, Maga supporters!
A common misunderstanding about the Razzies is that, yes, they reflect serious negative opinions about movies by the organization’s 1,000 members, but “the intent is humorous,” admits co-founder John Wilson. “We’re not a slap in the face. We’re a banana peel on the floor. We’re not saying ‘How dare you?’ We’re saying, ‘Why did you?’
“If you’re Helen Mirren and you have 82 scripts coming over your transom every week, how the hell did you pick ‘Winchester’?!” Watch our video chat above or listen to the audio podcast below.
Mirren is among the five nominees in the catfight over winning the prize for Worst Actress and “Winchester” competes for Worst Picture against “Gotti,” “The Happytime Murders,” “Holmes & Watson” and “Robin Hood.

It’s been nearly three decades since past Razzie Award winner Donald Trump competed at Hollywood’s kudos for Worst of the Year, but now he has two new chances for more glory. When Razzie nominations were announced today, Trump landed bids for Worst Actor and Worst Screen Combo alongside “his self-perpetuating pettiness,” according to Razzies chief John Wilson. Trump’s real-life partner Melania nabbed a nomination for Worst Supporting Actress. Both are honored for portraying themselves in Dinesh D’Souza‘s “Death of a Nation” and Michael Moore‘s “Fahrenheit 11/9.”
In the battle over Worst Actor of the Year, Trump competes against Johnny Depp (voice in “Sherlock Gnomes”), Will Ferrell (“Holmes & Watson”), John Travolta (“Gotti”) and Bruce Willis (“Death Wish”).
Melania’s rivals are Kellyanne Conway (“Fahrenheit 11/9”), Marcia Gay Harden (“Fifty Shades Freed”), Kelly Preston (“Gotti”) and Jaz Sinclair (“Slender Man”).

With the Academy Award nominations being announced tomorrow, here’s something a little lighter as a momentary distraction. The Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzies, have announced their annual nominees. This “worst of” nominations list attempts to shine a light on the films and performances that were the opposite of high quality in a given year. For 2018, they’re at it again, with a new political wrinkle. This isn’t something to pay much attention to, but on the eve of the Oscars nominations, something silly like this is a change of pace, at least. Consider it an appetizer of sorts before the main course in the morning. This year, the Razzies were led by Gotti, which was “honored” with six nominations. Also taking in a half dozen nods was The Happytime Murders. In the top category of Worst Picture, those two movies were joined by Holmes and Watson,...

Congratulations? The nominations for the 2019 Razzie Awards (otherwise known as the Golden Raspberry Awards) have been announced, and something tells us President Donald Trump might have something to tweet about it. Trump was "honored" in the Worst Actor category for his appearance—as himself it's important to note—in documentaries Death of a Nation and Fahrenheit 11/9. The Razzies, which will be held one day before the 2019 Oscars on Feb. 23, are notorious for celebrating the "worst" films and performances from across the past year. The Razzies have announced their nominations “honoring” the worst films of the year, and as usual they’re plucking the low-hanging fruit. “Gotti” and “Holmes & Watson” have the dubious honor of leading all films with six nods each, including Worst Picture; “The Happytime Murders,” “Robin Hood,” and “Winchester” are also up for the top prize, with Donald Trump somehow landing a nomination as well.

If their dismal reviews wasn’t punishment enough, for the 39th year, the Razzie Awards seek to recognize the achievements of the worst movies of the year. And for 2019’s crop of nominees, John Travolta’s “Gotti” and Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s “Holmes & Watson” both received the “honor” of being nominated for Worst Picture of 2018.
Melissa McCarthy might be nominated for an Oscar on Tuesday morning, but on Monday morning, she scored a nomination for Worst Actress for both “The Happytime Murders” and “Life of the Party,” and the former also landed among the five Worst Picture nominees. The box office bomb “Robin Hood” and Helen Mirren’s “Winchester” rounded out the nominees.

Gotti, The Happytime Murders, Holmes & Watson and Dinesh D’Souza’s documentary Death of a Nation tied for the most nominations for the Razzie Awards, the annual generally mean-spirited anti-Oscar list of the year’s worst movies.

Upon receiving a lifetime achievement award at the third annual Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards on Saturday, filmmaker Michael Moore took the opportunity to read the rest of the Academy Award acceptance speech he was unable to complete 15 years ago after being pulled off the stage for speaking out against the Iraq War.
In 2003, Moore won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature for his famed gun control documentary “Bowling for Columbine.” Shortly after receiving the Oscar, Moore declared his opposition to the invasion of Iraq and harshly criticized then-President George W. Bush, earning a loud mix of cheers and boos from the audience.
