Exclusive: MindRiot Entertainment, the transatlantic indie behind Danielle Deadwyler’s Parallel, and the upcoming OceanGate pic Salvaged has acquired the rights to adapt the life stories of former US soldiers Bryan Seely and Robert Hudock for a feature project.
The project is currently titled Father Figure and will feature two intertwined stories inspired by the former soldiers.
Seely is known internationally as the notorious “ethical hacker.” He first gained notoriety after simultaneously hacking into the FBI and Secret Service to expose a glitch in their system. The hacks should have landed him in prison but after intense interrogation, he was celebrated by government officials and has become a popular cyber security public speaker. Hudock served in the Air Force in Guam and the Philippines. After leaving the army he has also had an extensive career in hi-tech. We understand the story will focus specifically on Seely and Hudock’s experiences...

Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Mayim Balik, and more have joined Cate Blanchett in the cast of Jim Jarmusch’s new film, Father Mother Sister Brother.
Per Variety, the film recently wrapped production in Paris after previous shoots in Dublin and New Jersey, and will be completed later this year. The film is a triptych that follows three separate stories between parents and their adult children — one in Paris, one in Dublin, and one in the American Northeast.
The film’s description deems Father Mother Sister Brother as a “comedy interwoven with threads of melancholy,” with “character studies, quiet, observational and non-judgmental.” Jarmusch had hinted that the film will have a musical component, but it’s unknown whether the film will feature original songs or not. In addition to Driver, Waits, and Balik, Vicky Krieps, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat have also joined the cast.

How do the makers of Bridgerton keep a fandom as dedicated as theirs guessing? How does the Netflix show surprise a core of fans who are so intimately familiar with Julia Quinn’s source books that they’re anticipating every blush and ball before it even gets to the screen?
One solution, as has happened in season three, is to play with the established order of things. Though Benedict Bridgerton’s romance follows on from that of his brother Anthony’s in Quinn’s book series, the TV show has (rightly!) vaulted over that to first show the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.
Their other answer? Invention. In addition to TV-only characters Madame Delacroix, Will and Alice Mondrich and Queen Charlotte herself, a new raft of invented-for-the-show characters appear in season three. Here they all are, along with info on the actors playing them, plus a couple...

The jump from Avatar: The Last Airbender to Avatar: The Legend of Korra left a lot of gaps in between for fans and the studio to fill in. From the eerie absence of Sokka in the sequels to the identity of Toph’s children’s father, fans have been curious about several such questions for quite some time.
Toph, In Avatar: The Last Airbender
One of the fan theories that has been making the rounds in the fandom is about the identity of Lin and Suyin’s fathers. We know that the Beifong sisters are half-siblings, but it is never publically revealed who is the father of either of the characters. However, one fan theory points towards the possibility that Sokka could be Suyin’s father.

Actor Mark Wahlberg discussed an intense experience from filming the comedy Ted 2 involving a deleted scene. Despite never making the final cut, Wahlberg was forced to memorize a random list of 57 movie character names, and five years later, he still wakes up “saying that shit.”
The comedy Ted 2 was released in 2015 as a sequel to Seth MacFarlane’s original 2012 hit film, with Mark Wahlberg reprising his role as the titular teddy bear’s best friend. The plot involves Ted fighting to gain legal recognition as a person, rather than mere property. Wahlberg’s character John is Ted’s longtime buddy who helps him in his legal battles and silly misadventures.

Netflix reportedly paid more than $1 billion for the right to stream all the new Sony movies from 2022-26. And so far, it looks like Netflix overpaid by a mile. We’ll detail the lackluster output in a moment, but first, let’s focus on the next Sony bomb on its way. Behold the trailer for “Madame Web.”
Yes, this actually includes a real human saying, “He was in the Amazon with my Mom when she was researching spiders right before she died.”
On your internet forum of choice, you’ll find unanimous scorn about this trailer. It’s a level of mockery we haven’t seen since the trailers for “Cats” or the terrifying first version of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” teaser. In an era of overwhelming superhero fatigue, “Madame Web” almost looks like it was made to out-flop “The Flash.”
While this certainly seems like a “Morbius”-level red flag for Sony,...

Anjimile has dropped a scathing new protest song, “Animal,” from his upcoming album, The King, out Sept. 8 via 4Ad.
Written in summer 2020, “Animal” seethes with the anger, despair, and grief that fueled the mass protests against police brutality following the murder of George Floyd. Over the booming, unnerving strum of a blown-out acoustic guitar, Anjimile holds nothing back as the song builds to a devastating final verse: “And I heard blue lives matter/from a white liberal/Piece of shit I couldn’t stand at all/If you treat me...

We knew Warner Bros’ Barbie and Universal’s Oppenheimer were going to be big — but not this big.
Paramount’s Tom Cruise sequel Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One learned that the hard way (65% Weekend 2 decline with $19.3M) by going one weekend before the dual tidal wave, trying to avoid the wake of what we all thought was going to be the summer’s biggest hit in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny over the July 4th weekend.
These tickets for Barbie and Oppenheimer won’t punch themselves, so expect a second weekend of $72M (-55%) for the Mattel doll and $35M for Oppenheimer, which will stay strong with an expected 56% ease with locks on 400 Imax auditoriums. Combined, the two movies will count a weekend around $107M.

Biz Markie was a hip-hop legend. There are just no two ways around it. And unlike many other legendary rappers, there hasn’t really been anyone to really mimic what Biz Markie was able to do, especially when you think about a song like “Just a Friend.” Now, it appears Biz Markie is getting the documentary treatment in the upcoming film, “All Up in the Biz.”

"Save us Father! There's evil down here." This looks creepy. 101 Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie supernatural horror film called The Gates, made by the filmmaker Stephen Hall. The title must be a reference to the "Gates of Hell", not just the prison itself. Or perhaps somewhere else more sinister... Set in Victorian London, a chilling thriller at a prison. A serial killer has been sentenced to death by electric chair in the 1890s, but in his final hours, he puts a curse on the prison he is in, and all of those in it. The film stars Michael Yare and Richard Brake, along with John Rhys-Davies & Elena Delia as two post mortem photographers, turned paranormal investigators; plus David Pearse & Peter Coonan. This looks much better than expected, with a scary story to boot. And the intense end of the trailer hints at a big showdown.

Memorial Day weekend continued the year’s trend of only the biggest of blockbusters doing decently, though it’s still too early to consider this the summer of disappointments just yet. Read on for the weekend box office report.
No less than five movies were released nationwide on Friday in anticipation of the extended four-day weekend, but Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” starring newcomer Halle Bailey in the title role, along with Melissa McCarthy and Javier Bardem, with voice roles by Akwafina, Daveed Diggs, and Jacob Tremblay, came out as the solid weekend winner. Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco plays a man named Sebastian Maniscalco while Robert De Niro plays his father Salvo, in the comedy About My Father. Maniscalco and De Niro as father and son are the major delight in this otherwise mildly funny, warm-hearted comedy. It is a comedy about family but not really a family comedy as there are bits of adult humor.
Dad Salvo (De Niro) is a hairstylist (don’t call him a barber!) from a long line of hardworking, hard-scrabble, stoop-postured, Sicilian scowlers, but Salvo left Sicily to immigrate to America to give his son a better life. However, his second-generation Italian-American son has fallen for someone who is not a fellow Italian-American – an artist named Ellie (Leslie Bibb) whose immigrants ancestors came over a little earlier – on the Mayflower.

There’s no doubt that Robert De Niro is funny, but his recent taste in comedies have certainly called his sense of humor into question. It’s been over 20 years since “Analyze This” and “Meet the Parents” launched the robust comedy leg of the Oscar winner’s career, but not every subsequent project has been as successful. Following the twin head scratchers of “Dirty Grandpa” and “The War with Grandpa” (unrelated; though equally ignored), the godfather of Hollywood has finally found his comedy groove again.
And wouldn’t you know, all it took was a good, old-fashioned Italian American family farce — fittingly titled “About My Father.” Though there’s a wide swath of the public for whom De Niro can do no wrong, even giants can fall. Luckily, Sebastian Maniscalco knows the importance of family.

The arrival of a new Guardians Of The Galaxy movie isn’t just a cause for celebration because the MCU bestowing the world with another hand-crafted mixtape of forgotten bangers and impeccable vibes, perfectly curated to soundtrack the exploits of Peter Quill and pals. Now, here comes Awesome Mix Vol. 3, the final playlist for the Guardians’ farewell tour – once again stacked with hits we’ll be spinning for months on end. But, here’s the tough question: which of the three soundtracks comes out on top? Which mix is the most undeniably awesome? Gabriele Amorth, a Vatican exorcist with a deep understanding of demonology, is known for having performed more than 50,000 exorcisms in his lifetime, often on the same individuals who had been possessed multiple times. Amorth did not, however, exorcize everyone who professed to be possessed. Despite his belief in the existence of the Devil and God, he understood the importance of scientific and medical support. He did not execute exorcisms in situations of psychiatric problems; instead, he urged the afflicted to consult a doctor. Despite his strong religious beliefs, he did not try to displace scientific treatments. He concentrated his attention on the minority who were genuinely possessed by evil since he thought that many of those who sought his treatment for possession were actually in need of mental health treatment.
In the movie The Pope’s Exorcist, Amorth is shown as a realistic, intellectual person with a far-ranging understanding of what good and evil are.

In the vast tapestry that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies — based on the comics by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning — filled the role of "quirky outsiders." This is a gargantuan feat, given the number of gods, aliens, monsters, and other extraordinary beings found throughout the series. The team consisted of a single human being, Peter (Chris Pratt) who was abducted by a UFO as a child, and had eventually fallen into a family-like relationship with a team of mutants and alien warriors. There was Rocket Raccoon (voice of Bradley Cooper), a talking tree named Groot (Vin Diesel), a deadly assassin named Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), her mostly-mechanical sister Nebula (Karen Gillen), a literal-minded bruiser named Drax (Dave Bautista), and the gentle psychic Mantis (Pom Klementieff).

Although “Love Is Blind” stars Jackie Bonds and her fiancé Marshall Glaze appeared to have a promising start on season 4, the two ultimately never made it to the alter.

Gunsmoke set a record as the longest-running scripted television show on primetime with 20 seasons under its belt between 1955 and 1975. It went down in history as one of the greatest Western dramas ever to hit the screen, but some fans would argue that the awards season didn’t give it the attention that it deserved. Gunsmoke won five Emmy Awards over its 20 seasons, although none of them went to lead actor James Arness.

Brendan Fraser took the prize for Best Actor at the 95th Academy Awards. He was nominated for his performance as the 600-pound Charlie in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" — not everyone liked the movie, but seemingly everyone liked his performance in it. But this isn't the first Oscar winner featuring Fraser that had a "whale" as its subject. What was the first one? "Gods and Monsters," a 1998 biopic about James Whale (played by Ian McKellen), the director most famous for giving the world the first two Universal "Frankenstein" films.
Directed by Bill Condon, the film adapted "Father of Frankenstein," a speculative novel by Christopher Bram about Whale's death in the 1950s. Condon's script won Best Adapted Screenplay at the 71st Academy Awards. Bizarrely enough, "Gods and Monsters" actually does have some similarities to "The Whale" other than Fraser's presence and the cetacean-inspired naming. True to history, Whale is a lonely,...

Mira Sorvino has blasted the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for leaving her late father, Paul Sorvino, out of the 2023 Oscars In Memoriam segment.

The tweet came after Mira Sorvino shared an Instagram clip on Sunday night of her memorable 1996 Best Supporting Actress acceptance speech for Mighty Aphrodite, in which she thanked her father and caused him to break down in tears. “On this Oscars night I am so happy for all of the nominees and the winners, but I am also moved in a thousand different ways when I think of the night I got to share my Academy Award with my Dad, the very great actor Paul Sorvino, who was never nominated,...

Viewers may recognize Ralph Ineson from his on screen roles in such films and TV shows as The Witch, Willow, Chernobyl, and Game of Thrones, among others – and if you’ve seen Ineson in action, you’ve probably also noticed that he has an awesome voice, which is why several credits on his résumé are voiceover roles. So it’s not surprising to hear (from our friends at Bloody Disgusting) that Ineson has been hired to provide the voice of a demon for the supernatural thriller The Pope’s Exorcist, starring Russell Crowe.

Florian Zeller doesn’t make films, he makes birth control at 24fps. Adapted from his play of the same name — and adding rich cinematic dimensions to the text’s ingenious structural conceit — Zeller’s brilliant and unsparing “The Father” shook people for how it simultaneously conveyed the confusion of suffering from dementia, and the heartache of losing a loved one to it. His follow-up, which similarly originated on the stage, makes the writer-director’s shattering debut feel like a “Paddington” movie by comparison.
Lacking any of the puzzle box magic that allowed Zeller’s previous film to rescue profound traces of humanity from the massacre of its mental illness, “The Son” offers a stiff and straightforward family portrait that emphasizes the senselessness of depression through the simplicity of its plot. Is it an unusually honest portrayal of parental helplessness in the face of a devastatingly cruel disease, one that may...

Exclusive: Children’s classic The NeverEnding Story could become the next major fantasy property to get a screen reboot.
While The Rings of Power and House Of The Dragon duke it out for TV ratings, I recently asked one European studio head which fantasy property could be the next IP to pop. Their answer: The NeverEnding Story.
It turns out a handful of streamers and studios, on both sides of the Atlantic, are chasing screen rights to the beloved property by the late German author Michael Ende. We have spoken to multiple interested parties and hear there are multi-million dollar offers on the table. German agency Ava represents the estate but declined to comment.
The NeverEnding Story follows a boy who happens upon a magical book that tells of a young warrior given the task of stopping the Nothing, a dark force [Stranger Things, anyone?], from engulfing the wonderland world of Fantastica.

Rome-based indie distributor Intramovies has snapped up international sales rights to Locarno contender “Nightsiren” (“Svetlonoc”) by Tereza Nvotovà.
The Slovakia-Czech Republic production turns on a young woman who returns to her remote mountain home to seek answers about her traumatized childhood. The deeply superstitious villagers turn on her, accusing her of witchcraft and murder.
As Nvotová, who co-wrote the screenplay with Barbara Namerová, explains in her statement, “Nightsiren” “seeks to dispel outdated myths surrounding womanhood, drawing a line between ancient misogynist superstitions and their resurgence in the modern world.”
“Even though women are no longer being burned at the stake, they’re still targeted for their sexuality, emotionality and reproductive choices. Only the label has changed, from ‘witch’ to ‘slut.’ ‘Nightsiren’ talks about the value of freedom if we refuse to go down the conventional path,” she asserts.

‘Father Stu’ Review: Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson Form an Unholy Alliance in Sloppy Religious Biopic
A faith-based drama co-starring Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson that was written and directed by Gibson’s 31-year-old girlfriend, Rosalind Ross (whose only previous credits are a short film that she co-wrote in 2014 and a guest appearance on one of Laura Ingraham’s demonic talk shows), “Father Stu” doesn’t sound like a movie so much as it does a biblical exercise in faith and forgiveness. Alas, watching this messy-as-hell biopic about a foul-mouthed boxer priest requires a Christ-like amount of both, and inspires precious little of either in return.
Of course, as an agnostic Jew who wouldn’t go within 10 feet of Gibson unless I was wearing one of those padded bomb suits from “The Hurt Locker,” I’m not exactly the target audience for a movie that aspires to feel like a “Passion of the Christ” remake directed by David O. Russell. But as a critic who’s...

The ad campaign for “Father Stu” — before-and-after photos with Mark Wahlberg looking sleazy in a mug shot, then as a clean-cut clergyman glancing up at the heavens — makes you think it’s going to be a movie about the world’s toughest priest. It is, but not in the way you expect. “Father Stu” is based on the true story of Stuart Long, who started out as an amateur boxer, and Wahlberg plays him as an innocent ruffian in shaggy hair and a handlebar mustache who’s grinding away at being a fighter because he doesn’t know what else to do. By the time the film starts, in the ’90s, he is already over the hill: a former Montana Golden Gloves heavyweight champ who can’t find a sponsor, and who walks away from each bout with lingering infections. So he decides, on a whim, to go to L.

Dropping during Semana Santa, Mark Wahlberg's latest film, "Father Stu," tells the true story of an amateur boxer turned priest whose introduction to Catholicism comes via his Latina love interest, Carmen. She's a devout Catholic, minding her own business when Stewart "Stu" Long notices her at the grocery store. She initially turns him down, but he persists, going to and eventually joining her church.

Sony Pictures has acquired “Father Stu,” a true-life drama starring Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson.
Rosalind Ross wrote and directed the faith-based movie, which will be released in theaters on Good Friday, April 15.
“Father Stu” tells the story of boxer-turned-priest Father Stuart Long and his inspiring journey from self-destruction to redemption. Along with Wahlberg, who plays the title character, and Gibson, the film features Jacki Weaver and Teresa Ruiz.
“Father’s Stu’s journey from troublemaker to clergyman was inspiring to many, including me,” said Wahlberg. “Rosey has done an incredible job capturing the essence of who he was and how he affected the people he met. I hope that with this film, we keep his spirit alive and continue his good works.”
Wahlberg will serve as a producer with Stephen Levinson and Jordon Foss. Executive producers include Miky Lee, Colleen Camp, Patrick Peach and Tony Grazia.
