A couple who appeared on ABC’s reality show Wife Swap and later concocted a fantastic hoax that drew worldwide attention has been pardoned by the Colorado governor.
In October 2009, Richard and Mayumi Heene claimed that their 6-year-old son, Falcon, was trapped in a mylar balloon that soared into the sky.
The sensational story saw police and National Guard helicopters called out to follow the homemade helium device for more than two hours and 50 miles people around the world watched live. Watch Katie Couric’s CBS News report from that day below.
As it turned out, the son was hiding in the family’s attic. The child’s mother later confessed that the family planned the entire story in order to make them more marketable for a reality TV show.

Distributor Banijay Rights has unveiled its operational and financial leadership team under new CEO Cathy Payne, with Roisin Thomas continuing as COO and Endemol Shine International’s (Esi) John Richards joining as CFO.
Both report into Payne, the former CEO of Esi, who started in her new role at Banijay Rights on Monday.

Comedian/writer Adam Conover is the new host of Nickelodeon’s forthcoming family game show, The Crystal Maze, an all-new version of the UK series.
The show premieres Friday, Jan. 24, at 7:00 p.m. (Et/Pt). The Crystal Maze will feature Conover as the Maze Master, charged with guiding one family team through physical and mental challenges set within an elaborate labyrinth of four giant and immersive themed zones: Aztec, Eastern, Futuristic and Industrial.

Chris Coelen has extended his tenure as CEO of Kinetic Content as the La-based production business moves into scripted TV. Kinetic is part of the Red Arrows Studios stable and has been built on unscripted fare, with a roster of factual entertainment, formats and lifestyle series including “Married at First Sight,” the “Little Women” franchise for Lifetime and the recently announced new Bravo commission “Spy Games.”
Coelen is a former agent at UTA and launched the U.S. division of British indie Rdf (“Wife Swap”) in 2006 before setting up Kinetic in 2010. Red Arrow, part of German media giant ProSiebenSat.1, took a majority stake in the business the same year. Coelen will oversee Kinetic’s push into scripted with colleagues across the Red Arrow group. The company is recruiting new staffers for the drama drive, which will target both the U.S. and international market, including a head of scripted development and production.

Paramount Network is expanding the reality competition series “Ink Master” with a two-season renewal, and an order for a spinoff series.
The tattoo-competition series will premiere its 12th season, titled “Ink Master: Battle Of The Sexes,” on Tuesday, June 11 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt. The new season features teams of male and female artists competing against each other in the ultimate battle for a chance to win $100,000, an editorial feature in Inked, and the coveted “Ink Master” title.
Past contestants and fan favorites will return throughout the season to coach the teams in various challenges. After each challenge, the contestants face a panel made up of Dave Navarro and tattoo artists Chris Nunez and Oliver Peck. Season 13 is slated to premiere in 2020, and each season will consist of 16 one-hour episodes.
The spinoff series, titled “Ink Master: Grudge Match,” will provide former contestants the opportunity to settle vendettas with their biggest rivals.

Paramount Network is expanding its popular Ink Master franchise across platforms, ordering two more 16-episode seasons (13 and 14) of its hit original tattoo-competition series, and new spinoff series, Ink Master: Grudge Match. The First 48 exec producer Alexis Robie has launched his own independent production company and has struck a first-look deal with Cineflix Media.
Robie, who worked on ITV Entertainment’s long-running A&E series for six years and over 140 episodes, has launched Coronet Productions with a multi-year pact with the Canadian producer and distributor.
He will focus on true crime, justice, and access-driven programming for U.S. networks and will be based in New York. Robie will work closely with Cineflix Productions President Charles Tremayne and Cineflix Rights will have the rights to distribute Coronet programming.
In addition to The First 48 and its spin-off The First 48 Presents: Homicide Squad Atlanta, Robie also produced The Killer Speaks and The Case that Haunts Me for A&E, Selling New York for Hgtv and Wife Swap for ABC.
