R.E.M.: Perfect Square (2004)
Finally, close to perfection
It's finally there-maybe the best concert documentary of its kind (and i've seen a lot!)
Leaving the half-baked, sometimes very crude attempts to produce a time-after-time enjoyable music movie of legendary R.E.M. behind, this one finally made it into music lover's heaven.
Besides the fact that it's a very personal benefit to me, cause I've actually been there that beautiful summer day in Wiesbaden in 2003, this concert has been recorded at the highest technical and professional standards. Grab a good stereo and TV and it's like actually being (back) there.
Furtermore (maybe cause they knew it was being taped) the band, not the youngest of guys anymore, unleashed all their live experience and musical abilities to create an entertainment-inferno. The DVD shows the whole concert, which has been recorded with quite a lot of cameras from well-chosen angles.
Those who only know the band by their greatest hits will find this concert movie as enjoyable as those who are able to sing along every syllable with JMS. They actually played rather unknown songs plus two brand new ones along with fresh variations of their smash hits-23 all together.
Highly recommended- not only by me as a die-hard fan but also as someone knowing to value a dedicated production.
9/10 (I think 10/10 is not really something I'll ever experience...)
Pearl Jam: Live at the Garden (2003)
Even better than the last one
-NO SPOILERS HEREIN (COULD THERE BE ANY?)- Being a huge admirer of Pearl Jam´s inventive and professional way of creating music, the awesome "Touring Band 2000" DVD was a real blast to me. The band turned out to be one of the best live acts ever to be witnessed. But recently I went to buy the new one- PJ live at the Garden. And it came to beat Touring Band in eyery aspect. Most important to me: The feeling was all right. In 190(!) minutes, the guys create an atmosphere of "Why the hell have all the other people been there and not me?". The music is just the way any music should be: handcrafted and professional (My personal favourite: The distinct and gripping "crown of thorns"). You get all the rockers and all the "ballads" and they´re gonna blow you away... And Ed Vedder is a great entertainer by not trying to be one. It´s real hard to describe the experience of watching a great concert like this one, so go buy and see it yourself. No Question: 10/10
RoadMovie (1996)
Excellent Documentary of the Band
As a great fan of Georgia Rock Band R.E.M. this documentary was a "must-see" for me. The Film shows a wildly entertaining range of the band´s best songs. Although one won´t miss great hits like "Losing my Religion" and "Everybody hurts", the film also delivers ground-breaking live performances of rather unknown songs. In addition, it has very good picture and sound quality, which gives you sort of a feeling like being right in front of the stage. Also check out the excellent camerawork! I give it 10 out of 10 stars.
