Bobby (2006)
Brilliant acting, writing, settings, historical accuracy, and directing! The blueberry pie scene alone is worth the price of admission!
I saw "Bobby" on Thanksgiving Day and I am sure thankful that I did. I was almost eighteen at the time the movie is taking place, so viewing it was like beaming back into the events of my past. Tears flowed this time around, too.
I really loved how Emilio incorporated film and audio of the real events as they are taking place to splice into the beautiful fabric of his story. I felt like I was there. I almost started coughing from all the seventy's cigarette smoke. The makeup, hair, wardrobe, set dressing, all of it was wonderful. When the shooting took place, the clock in the background said a certain time. A minute later Anthony Hopkins' watch was barely shown, and it was the correct time, too. Little details like that are important and add to the reality of the movie.
One of the most profound, brilliantly acted, directed, written, and edited joys in film history is the blueberry pie kitchen scene. It is a gem. Priceless and flawless as any diamond. That scene alone was worth the price of admission.
Regardless of your political ideas, "Bobby" is a movie for anyone who loves good old fashion films that deliver. Go see it.
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
This film is your worse religious nightmare and blessed religious dream all at the same time. Awesome!!
The Passion does not compare to anything else that I have ever seen. The realism is light years away from anything except your worse religious nightmare and blessed religious dream all at the same time. I kept telling myself that He died for me, but, whew, to see it "in person" is too much, but a must for Christians to see.
From the very first frame to the last name on the credits, it is truly awe inspiring. I had steeled myself not to get too emotional because I was afraid that I would have to leave the theater. I was so fascinated by how this film was being done, that I became partially numb to all that I was seeing. Survival reflex maybe. Although I was disturbed that I couldn't cry, I did jump and avert my eyes plenty of times. That helped somewhat, but I could still hear what was happening as I cringed inside. I told my friends that we would all probably be having flashbacks as we remembered what we had witnessed. I do mean witnessed! I felt like I was there. Now when I go read my Bible it will be a much more visual experience.
I can not describe the brutality and sacrifice that was put upon Jesus. I am very surprised to feel more grateful, humbled, and uplifted about His ordeal just because I saw this film.
If people take their rage at Jesus' death out on the Jews and Romans, I think they are missing the whole point of the story. All of those who killed and loved Him were acting as God's instruments in Jesus' destiny. His death and rebirth were ordained before He was even born. Those people are just using the film as excuse to fuel hate. Pity all who hate others for whatever reason.
I applaud Mel Gibson and everyone involved with the film. Whether a person is a Christian or not, this is a film of how a man, many believe, changed the world. The Passion has given a reason for people to have an open discussion about religion when maybe they wouldn't even be talking to each other before the film. It is a film that tells an excellent, albeit brutal, story in a very realistic way. That is what a film is supposed to do. No matter who or if we believe, we are ALL GOD'S CHILDREN. GO BLESS EVERYONE. MAY HATE TURN TO LOVE IN ALL OUR HEARTS.
Holes (2003)
Deep, dirty and delicious!
I really enjoyed this movie. The acting was a hoot, the sound track had my toes just a stompin', and I loved the Western flash backs. I bet that everyone involved was sick of dust when they wrapped, though. When I left the movie theater, I almost went home and bought some sweet onions. "Holes" is a sure fire winner for the whole family.
Legally Blonde (2001)
Being Blonde has never been better!
I loved this movie! Reese Witherspoon is just a delight. She brings just the right amount of passion and whimsy to her character, Elle. Such a free spirit and a joy to watch. Reese reminds me of another such actress, Drew Barrymore.
Although it is a definite "chick flick," I was amazed at how much the men in the audience were enjoying it. They were laughing out loud just as much as we women were.
All of the actors seem like they are really having a blast. Luke Wilson was his usual quiet, yet imposing self. I enjoyed his performance very much.
The mark of a great movie is if it can appeal to everyone regardless of age, gender, or ethnic background. "Legally Blonde" fits that criteria very well. It is just a fun movie to go see over and over again.
Evolution (2001)
This movie is full of fun adventure, intrique, science, hidden love, and invading slimy aliens. What else does a movie need?
I really enjoyed "Evolution." Oh, I know it is not deep, serious entertainment like a play by Shakespeare, but so what? The premise that some sort of alien life form could infest our planet from a meteor strike is not all that far fetched. Microbes and such that live in space might spread all over the universe that way. Of course, I doubt (and hope) that if something did come our way, its ecosystem would not produce such different forms of life quite so quickly.
I thought everyone in this movie played it as unstated over the top as possible without being too silly. It reminded me of one of my favorite movies, "Ghostbusters." Maybe because they were both directed by a talented gentleman named Ivan?
All of the actors and actresses were terrific. The chemistry between them was great. It seemed like they were all having a good time making this evolve into something the whole family could enjoy together.
The only really serious and not make believe part of the movie, was the mention of the hard times some of our soldiers are experiencing after they had taken the Anthrax vaccine. I think some have even been court- martialed for refusing to take it. That David Duchovny's character, Ira Kane, had invented the vaccine, was thought provoking. A snippet of wee negativity from this movie goer. In the scene where the police were taking pictures with the meteor, didn't anyone ever warn them of a hazard called radiation? Even our heroes didn't check for that possible gift from space. Picky, picky, I know.
John Powell's music is wonderful. The scenery is lovely. Michael Chapman did a great job with the cinematography. All of the alien gritters are very colorful, albeit hungry little devils.
Out of a possible ten, I give "Evolution" an eight on the Alien Scale of fun science fiction movies. It made me laugh and think at the same time.
Miss Congeniality (2000)
And the Winner is. . .Sandra Bullock!
My friends and I went to see a sneak preview of "Miss Congeniality" and laughed all the way through it. Everyone in the cast is wonderful.
Of course, Sandra Bullock lights up any scene that she is in. That girl could be in a barn shoveling solid waste material and she would make it look comical.
Even though the movie is set in a beauty pageant, it is not about the behind the scenes cat scratching that can go on there. To me, this movie is about how we all need friends that we can count on. No matter how successful you are, how many zeroes are in your paycheck, or how many awards you may win, if you don't have any good friends to share it with, the joy is short-lived. A true friend watches your back for all kinds of trouble. Life's pain doesn't have to be a bullet to sometimes hurt.
I enjoyed this movie very much and will go see it again.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1999)
Terrific! Fun! Magical! Colorful! I enjoy it more each time I see it.
"Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2000)" is a delight to watch. It is only the second musical that I have ever bought on video. I mainly got it because I like Donny Osmond, but the play offers so much more that one talented actor.
I was familiar with the Biblical story of Joseph, but that is not required for the viewer to be entertained. The music is upbeat and lively. I am not very athletic, but it made me try to do some of the dance steps. Okay, quit laughing.
The costumes and make-up is incredible. Such color and beauty. They add so much to the adventure of the story. Every single actor is this production is wonderful. The singing is truly splendid.
The camera angles are inspired. The many sets are unique. I especially thought the backdrop of the desert was lovely.
All I can say is that Andrew Lloyd Weber is a genius. Thanks to cast and crew for a wonderful production.

Laughing Boy (2000)
It a voyeuristic romp through one man's life full of intrigue, fantasy, sex, love, and laughs.
This is a VERY FUNNY MOVIE!!!!! I laughed and laughed. The actors are hysterical. The plot is imaginative and intelligent. The music is lively and makes you want to clap your hands.
Be sure and stay for the credits because there are a few surprises as they scroll past.
Take a date, take a friend, take your dog, but GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!
