gay jokes are not funny!!!
21 November 2005
you don't go into movies like this expecting much of anything, but when i walk out offended, it just pisses me off.

seriously, what's with all the derogatory gay jokes in this movie?? just friends would be much more entertaining without them. yeah, i get that it's supposed to be stupid humor, but aren't we past the point of calling people homo and fag for a laugh? that's not funny at all.

c'mon people we can do better than this! how about a joke that isn't at the expense of another people's feelings...or at least let's try not to pick on minorities! screenwriters/filmmakers, PLEASE it's time for a change.

Summer Catch (2001)
Poop on a stick

Honestly, this movie would be all right in my book if they would have taken out all the jokes making fun of overweight women and the gratuitous sexual content. It would have been a nice family movie. But no, they had to go and make it crude, and now I've lost all respect for Brittany Murphy! When will they make a movie that's suitable to watch with my little sister? Probably never.

kinda dull
9 October 2001
I'm glad this movie was made so that lesbian latinos can have a voice, but honestly I was a tad bored with it. It was amusing at some parts, and slow at others. The scenes seemed to run long, and the acting was very staged. Not something I'd want to see again, but not a complete waste of time. If you don't go into it expecting much, you won't be as disappointed as I was.

beautiful

I wish this film would go mainstream, but I doubt it ever would. It's truly amazing that it presents the passion and pure intensity of feelings when a person is in love, in such a lighthearted way. I recommend that friends of lesbians see this to get an understanding of how close two women can get. This movie is a good representation of young love, and I'm just so happy that it was made.

Intriguing...yet slow and pointless
12 July 2001
I liked it while I watched it, but looking back I feel like it's a women's picture, with a majority of women as characters, and it just should have been directed by a woman. I feel like a woman director could have really explored the psyche of all the women better and uncovered why things happened in a more satisfying way. The topic focused on female issues, and the truth is men just have an outsider's view on it. Men can do movies like this, but I can feel the artificiality of it and deep down inside I just know that it could have been done better with a female touch. Too bad not enough women are give the chance to prove that they can do it better, and the proportion of female to male directors shows that it's still a man's domain. Phooey!

awful documentary about an amazing woman
24 January 2001
The documentary was so incredibly cheesy and I really think they screwed up something good. It would have been so much better if they just would have presented the information (and shorter) but instead the director went with his own little thing...zooming in and out on flowers, going from black and white to color, having the mother and daughter talk in a scripted tone. Very weird. Please don't let that Marquise Lepage make a documentary about me!

oye!

Yes, this movie is interesting, but it sparked annoyance in me. Aren't we all sick of movies that glorify violence against women? I'd like to see one thriller that can sustain a storyline without it. Just think, if we see violent acts against women over and over again in movies and television, don't we eventually begin to normalize these acts? They eventually become acceptable and they instill fear in every woman that she too will become a victim. Substitute any other oppressed subculture of people and we all would be a lot more offended when it showed up as a topic of a movie for the 100th time. It's time to change the victimized woman cliche, people. Who else is with me on this?

horrible, horrible, horrible

have you ever been embarrassed for the actors while watching a movie because the movie was SO BAD? this is how i felt during down to you. i couldn't believe how badly put together this movie was, it was like i could see them writing the script. and then there was just this incomplete story feel to it. and it all makes sense because the same person wrote and directed it. i really wanted to like this movie because freddie and julia are cute people but my god... no way in hell. bottom line: avoid this movie!

could it be cuter?

this is one of the best teen movies i've seen in a while...god, i laughed. so maybe the storyline was a little weak, but there are some great comedic moments in this, and i'm not talking about the part where she has eggs thrown at her because that wasn't funny (and i heard people laughing when i saw it in the theater...that's just cruel). the best part about this movie is the credits...what an original idea to put high school pictures of cast and crew in. nice touch.

glad i watched it

i thought it was terrific! very realistic and funny dialogue, and realistic action in a newsroom. i didn't like how the jennifer storyline is not really concluded or how the ending doesn't give us closure. holly hunter fit the part perfectly...she's one crazy actress. this movie is well worth seeing.

good god!

this movie was atrocious! the acting was extremely cheesy and fake...were we supposed to relate to these characters? none of the relationships developed realistically at all. everything felt forced. and its PCness made some of the situations incredibly implausible for the time. if you're looking at just the music, sure then, this movie was fine. but if you look at the whole picture, it's poorly made, and just another cheesy tv movie to add to the pile. i've never seen the broadway version, but the original film is spectacular compared to this.
