Drum Struck (1992)
This is the worst movie I have ever seen
NEVER, have I seen a movie worse or more pointless than this. I saw it on the end of the video for Tetsuo: The Iron Man (Now THAT is a crazy film). I consider myself pretty open to alternative cinema, but this "film" is pure and utter craptacularity. 'nuff said
Kikujirô no natsu (1999)
Great!
I saw this movie on a plane between Tokyo and Washington DC - uncut, luckily and I was absolutely amazed at how good it was. When I first looked in the in flight magazine and saw that a Beat Takeshi movie was playing I couldn't believe my luck. This isn't at all like some of Beat's gangster movies (Hana-bi, Sonatine) but an incredibly emotionally powerful story about a young boys search for his mother who left him to live with his grandmother. The boy is accompanied by Takeshi in a role that only he could play. If you see it you'll know what I mean. The two go on a humorous (mostly due to the Beat's antics) journey across Japan to find the boy's mother, but this is by no means a comedy. The music (which I believe was done by the same compaser as Hana-bi) is absolutely THE BEST and adds a lot to the movie. Of course, the visual imagery and direicting style are great too. One of the best movies of the year, I can't wait for the video.
Mononoke-hime (1997)
Excellent!
Definitely one of the greatest movies of all time, especially in the anime category!
I first saw this movie on video in Japan this summer with only one years worth of Japanese, a Japanese friend who knew some English, and my intuition to help me understand the plot. Obviously I don't think I got everything that was going on but nevertheless the absolutely amazing animation and deep plot with characters that seem real helped me to love this movie I can't seem to find a script online (if anyone knows of a complete one post it). Since I can't find a script it looks like I'll have to be forced to see the (no doubt) horribly translated Disney version. Of course, just seeing it on the big screen will be worth the ticket price Of the four movies by Miyazaki I've seen (Totoro, Nausicaa, Kiki, this), Mononoke Hime is by far the best. Any movie good enough to make me buy a legit video copy in Japanese for $50 is obviously a classic!
Repo Man (1984)
The best movie - EVER!
Repo Man is - no joke- my absolute number one favorite movie of all time. I think I've seen it between 25 and 35 times and I can recite most of the movie while I'm watching it. Absolutely the weirdest, funniest, most punk rock movie in existence. Every actor is great in every minor role and excellent quotable quotes abound throughout. Plate o' shrimp. It may take a watch or two before you get what is going on but its even enjoyable on a scene by scene basis, with tons of funny out of left field stuff, like "food". The soundtrack rages of course with Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies on it. What more can I say - see it or be a loser.
