About Schmidt (2002)
Outstanding movie; Outstanding entertainment
Jack Nicholson is simply fantastic. Cathy Bates is simply fantastic. Editing superb Sound superb Direction superior Cinematography excellent All actors outstanding.
This movie is a 10 and must NOT be missed!!
We Were the Mulvaneys (2002)
Emotionally explosive; Beau Bridges superb
The story could be explained in one minute from beginning to end and the movie runs a little slowly at times...But the emotional impact transferred to the movie watcher is powerful. Beau Bridges is the consummate actor once again displaying a wide variety of emotion without ever appearing that he is acting. I would have preferred that the dialogue give us a little break so that the stress the movie produces could ease before it starts up again.
All in all, a healthy 7.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
No acting noticeable in this Wonderful movie
This movie may be a comedy but reflected so many facets of real life as I remember. The generosity, all for one and one for all,and the goodness spread throughout this film as soft butter on bread. As said elsewhere, foul language was not necessary for this film to be effective.
The casting was superb. Noone appeared to be acting and if Lainie Kazan doesn't get an academy award for this one, Id be markedly surprised.
The direction, casting, screenplay, music, and editing were A Plus. This movie gets a thoughtful 10 and I advise anyone who has feeling and emotion to see this uplifting film.
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
I gave it a 10!
Russel Crowe should be this years' academy award winner hands down. What an amazing talent!!!
The acting was superb. The photography was superb. The sound was excellent. The music was outstanding. The pace was perfect. The direction was beautifully done.
In short...I gave it a rare 10 or 5 stars...This is a movie that cannot be missed. Except for a few very minor items, this movie could not be improved upon.
Behind Enemy Lines (2001)
Wonderful Photography....Lousy Movie
The photography is unbelievably good but the entire plot is childish and also unbelievable.
Owen Wilson's main ability is to run, run and run and utter the S--word ever so often. Gene Hackman..such a fine actor..is now on the other side of the bell curve at least in this movie...Lokar: Olek Krupa: It seems his main reason for being there was to wear his uniform letter perfect....Only Superman can avoid the enemy as well as Owen Wilson.
However Vladimir Mashkov, the paramilitary bad guy was superb and deserves an A plus for his role.
If you are bored, go see it simply for the missile part of it. I give it a generous 5.0.
Dangerous Invitation (1999)
The blonde gets a 9 in the *sexy* category
This was an adult movie..very soft...that was worth watching simply because the process was situations that could occur in real life. I thought the blonde..Kim Yates? was delectable and a pretty decent actor as well. After all, not every movie is made to compete for an academy award. But both lead actresses did very well in their characters.I give the movie a 6.
Training Day (2001)
Washington superb; choppier than stormy seas
Denzel Washington made this movie sparkle. He was and continues to be a wonderful actor. The action is swift. However I felt the movie was so choppy in parts that it was difficult for me to understand some of the sequences. And I missed out on some of the super trendy words and phrases. Ethan Hawke was good but not great. Very entertaining movie. It is worth seeing just to see Denzel Washington.
The Deep End (2001)
No boring segments in this movie
Writer-directors Scott Mc Gehee and David Siegel did a beautiful job on this one. The movie twists and turns were fresh and kept one attention throughout. If you can allow yourself not to nit-pick the not infrequent implausible situations, then you will appreciate the acting of mom and the "handsome bad guy" both of whom were excellent in their performances.
The photography and the music was beautifully done. In short, a very entertaining movie. I give it 3 and 1/2 stars.
Enemy at the Gates (2001)
Fine Acting...Editing C-
The battle of Stalingrad was very meaningful to me as I kept up with it as a young boy. As a result, this movie awakened the lost memories of yesteryear showing the massive destruction of human life in this battle for the survival of the USSR.
Joseph Fiennes and Jude Law were superb actors in this film. Bob Hoskins and Ron Perlman were also excellent.
It was too lengthy however and jerky in some spots. Too bad as the sets, action, and special effects were all so realistic.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Going against most of you
The cinematography is an academy award winner! The direction was superior. Since people in those days were supposed to express minimal emotion these actors fulfilled that requirement beautifully. But with expressionless faces how can one tell honestly whether any of the actors were outstanding except for the young girl. The entire story could have been told in less than one minute. How much fighting is necessary until one has had enough? 7.2/10 in this viewer's opinion.
Being the cynic that I am, I wonder what the viewing audience would have thought had the critics not given this movie rave reviews.
Vertical Limit (2000)
Special effects excellent...otherwise very ordinary
My desire for an adventurous and exciting movie was fulfilled but that was it.
Chris O'Donnell as Peter Garret was an expressionless bore. Scott Glen and Robert Taylor (VII) were excellent in their roles. The others appeared to be average at best.
In spite of this, I received sufficient entertainment benefit to make the experience worthwhile.
What's Cooking? (2000)
A very entertaining movie
Having seen this film without knowing a thing about it except for the unimpressive title, I found that I was very pleasantly surprised.
The music was excellent; the editing was exceptional and the 4 stories were very credible and well acted.
Highly recommended for those of you who enjoy a good movie without the necessity of having a 10 to 20 million dollar/movie actor(s) in it.
Remember the Titans (2000)
A WONDERFUL MOVIE: RELAX AND ENJOY!
Not every excellent movie needs to have a novel or twisted plot and ending. This movie fits in the above category. It is entertaining...sends a fine message...tells a story that can only help understanding between races with a fun, good-feeling ending. Denzel did a fine job as did the asst. coach and the players in general. Its a good feeling not to have to think too deeply to absorb one complicated plot after another. I give this movie and 8.2/10.
Not every movie has to end with a surprise ending. The actors were all excellent..I give it an 8.2
Gladiator (2000)
Good Movie; Computer Graphics Overdone
Having read in a Los Angeles major newspaper critique that this was the BEST movie of the year, I witnessed this movie expecting a 4 star performance. However I was somewhat disappointed by the extreme use of computer graphics. I deliberately haven't read any comments from other viewers or any other reviews so I could write unfettered. The emperor, the son of Marcus Aurelius, was the best actor along with his father. The fight scenes were excellent but they were mostly camera motion and sound effects. How one man could survive hand to hand combat with a never ending no. of physically fit combatants was hard for me to believe. And lastly, I missed out on hearing a large number of words. My wife seconds the motion on that one as well. All in all a relatively fast-paced entertaining movie but it did not come close to The Patriot which I thoroughly enjoyed.
American Beauty (1999)
A truly entertaining movie..One of the year's best
Extremely entertaining. This movie takes a slice of life without having to have any particular lessons to teach us.
Kevin Spacey is right up at the top as a consummate actor. He was terrific..Mena Suvari was perfect in her role as was Chris Cooper. I have to disagree with most critics on Annette Bening who played her part well, but not great as unfortunately I have seen a number of non-actors do just as well as a controlling and pejorative females.
The Director, editor, and cinematographer all deserve accolades.
The scene with the vagabond paper sack, the wind and the leaves was simply beautiful.
The Green Mile (1999)
Superb Acting by So Many in One Film
It is not commonplace to see so many actors whose performances were deserving of academy award nominations.
The miracles and themes I'll leave to all the other reviewers to comment on BUT Sam Rockwell who played Wild Bill was outstanding. If he doesn't get an academy award nomination for his part in this film, then the whole system must be "fixed". I ditto the above for:
Michael Duncan- - as John Coffey. Michael Jeter--Eduard Delacroix Doug Hutchison--Percy Wetmore
Tom Hanks and Gary Sinese were both outstanding.
Tom Hanks is so youthful appearing that Bonnie Hunt looked as if she were Tom's mother rather than wife. Overall, I found the film very depressing but fast-paced with very tender moments. One could literally feel the pain of those who suffered.
this film is personally rated 8.3
