See How They Run (2022)
what a wonderful film!
As a (almost) lifelong A C & detective/whodunnit tv/film fan (i ve seen The Mousetrap!) , I absolutely loved this film. It's funny,, tongue in cheek, clever, it has great performances (on top form, Rockwell and Ronan are superb) It has a good whodunnit too, it references AC a lot and has a quirky version of the Dame herself in it ,
Soairse Ronan does subtle comedy well too. It has a lot of red herrings and deals witth all the cliches of the genre in a fun way.
It is fun to see the classic A C Play recreated partially here in the film. Fond memories. And it reminds me of the humour in a Peter Ustinov A C film adaptation, only this has even more humour.
It even has a easter egg of a famouds AC adaptation for television and it''s not a person but a location.....
Yes, a very fine film indeed. Carry on, old man! (or, woman)
Hats off to all involved in the making of this film.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
what a great marvel film.....
The 3rd cinema visit this year (2021) for me brought a delightful marvel film.
I REALLY enjoyed this film. It has it all: inspired martial arts, humor , character developments, emotions, and its also quite spectacular, even if we may thinnk we've "seen it all already" with so much visual effects heavy movies coming out over these past ten years or so.
It makes you marvel (pun intended) and laugh,
It has a heart of goodness.
I can VERY MUCH recommend seing this movie in a cinema.
Tenet (2020)
IF you GET it, Its a GREAT Movie. See it in the cinema, if you can..
I agree on all the 8's and 9's given here, but that depends entirely on IF you get the movie or not. If you cannot grasp , even partially, what its about, then its dreadful or not so good. I (think) I got it (I also love Memento, Inception etc) and think it is a very clever, spectacular and thrilling movie. I saw it. luckily, on an IMAX screen , and the Bass audio (and more) was thrilling and intense, seats vibrated.
Ludwig Göransson's score is fitting the film, in that is is at times unsettling, but also accentuates the intricacies and feeling of the plot.
And the lead actors are all Extremely good here. I felt scared for 'Kat' when Kenneth Branagh's 'Sator' was really menacing, not overacting i m o.
John David Washington as 'the Lead '(Protagonist) was fenomenal.
Also Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki, Hats off!
And did i mention that is is a SPECTACULAR film? It is! And many stunning landscapes to view.
9/10 from me.
Well Done Chr. NOLAN. Pity the Corona-crisis/Covid seems to be truncating the box-office revenue for this one. It deserves massive crowds seeing it in the cinema, which is now sadly not possible.
Clash of the Titans (2010)
enjoyable action effects romp
I liked this film a lot. even the quickly done 3d conversion was decent, though no Avatar, of course.
The film itself did not disappoint. Its much more fun than for instance Pirates of the Caribbean 3 (a.w.e.). It does not drag, the action is fast and furious, the cgi effects are very good indeed. I liked the kraken, nice and massive. the giant scorpions are great too. so is medusa.
a good thing about this film is, that it is NOT too long.
all in all, i give it an 8/10.
go see this film in the cinema in 3d!
Watercolors (2008)
very moving gay drama
i was very moved by this film, it is tragic but with a hopeful ending as well. i felt the performances were very believable, the tender, sensitive Danny, (GREAT acting!) , the troubled, messed up carter, Danny's mother was great. as opposites attract, i liked the two opposites coming together, later on you just knew it was going to go wrong... carter's anger/feelings were heartbreaking, but from his point of view more or less understandable.
some flaws: it was a bit unclear why *exactly* carter came to stay with Danny. a bit of a shady/forced explanation. and we never found out the reason for or manner in which carter died. but it was tragic. I liked the way the movie ended though, a positive note, ***Spoiler*** with Danny finally patching up his not so easy going new relationship with new boyfriend in the end. he had to let go of (dead ) carter in the end.
yes, i think this is a believable gay drama and again , very touching. well done.
Were the World Mine (2008)
truly wonderful gay film
this film stole my heart, and the two male leads did the same. i had recently watched two rather tragic ending gay films and because of some personal things, was feeling a bit depressed, and... then i watched Were the world mine... It completely cheered me up, i mailed my l.a.t boyfriend with just rapturous remarks about this film (we're watching it together this weekend). to everyone/every gay slightly interested, Go see this film one way or the other.
the singing, the acting, the cute male (lead) characters, the plot, the art direction , it all just Works! together with Beautiful Thing, these are the 2 most wonderful gay films around. (there are other good ones around, sure...)
and yes, it's got a happy end. (that works for me every time!)
to sum it up in one word: Wonderful!
Le gendarme en balade (1970)
incredibly funny farce, (one of) the best gendarme-film(s)
i totally agree with the first review! This film is "wet yourself" laugh out loud funny, funny, funny!!!! it is definitely hilarious. At the start of the film, De Funès is very convincing as the bored rich man who longs for his former job, as he is not allowed to do anything strenuous, but WANTS to! (spoiler: he is lifted on to a horse with a forklift, fishes are put on his hook in the pond by a diver!). then, when he gets together with his old gendarme-mates, who are also bored without their old job, the film really starts to get hilarious. his usual manic gesturing and shouting is very funny, the scene where they all manage a traffic congestion in their old uniforms as "gendarmes" again, is brilliant ("we got to aggravate a minister"!!!), they end up in a hippie-car and in a hippie community smoking pot (very funny!), there is mad, hilarious fast (speeded up film) driving with lots of people crammed in and sticking out of cars, including a scene with the mad,"wild" nun, now two of them!, who also drive like mad, which is a brilliant bit in (almost?) every gendarme-film. toward the end portion of the film it all gets quite silly, real farce, but all very amusing, laugh out loud. the nudist-gag from film one is also "recycled", with a twist!
all in all, a hilarious film, one of the best, maybe THE best, gendarme-films with Louis de Funès, together with part 3 of this series. must-see for comedy/slapstick/farce-fans and the humor is timeless. thumbs up!!!!
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
Good but not brilliant!!! still worthwhile!
I, like many people, looked forward to this one. And I liked it, even though it's not as brilliant as ALIENS or Predator 1. But is is also not a disappointment. It has its share of expectation-thrills and a nice share of necessary gore, but not too severe. The 'Ripley'-type female lead character is strong and cool and kicks ass! The special effects are very good indeed! The story has a nice "surprise" at the very end of the film. I also liked the opening and closing credit sequences, which are stylish. (bonus!) Well done! Definitely worthwhile the price at the cinema-box office!!!! Fans should not miss this (even if it is 'good, not brilliant'.)
RR
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
absolutely fabulous!!!
this is THE most spectacular action-kung fu film ever made. its just soooo thrilling, breathtaking effects and fights. only minuspoint is the part when neo meets the architect of the matrix, this is a bit confusing, takes another viewing of the film to grasp all that is said. but for the rest, just praise for this MUST SEE movie, it´s better than LotR-the two towers!
can´t wait till part three, matrix revolutions, comes out in november.
X2 (2003)
excellent sequel surpasses pt.1
I really enjoyed this one: nice story, wonderful effects (i really liked nightcrawlers´ teleporting effects ) scifi action fans: this is a MUST SEE movie. Great fights, wonderful enemies....suspense....plotturns. Great! I think this one was even better than the first X-men.
Men in Black II (2002)
incredibly funny scifi flick!
hey folks, this is one movie not to miss, if you like to laugh and can handle weird things going on! this MIB2 is way better than part one, which was still quite a good movie too. But MIB 2 really "rocks the boat". it´s hilarious, the effects are superb. it even has a story to it!
R.Robinson.
Spider-Man (2002)
stunning effects, nice human drama story, good action
Definitely a top movie, but i must admit i liked starwars ep.2 better. Still, spider-man is spectacular, in effects, stunts and fight- sequences. it also has some good human drama written into it. a must for comic and fantasy fans.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
absolutely awesome movie
this is one seriously fantastic scifi movie. i was swept away by it, it´s much better than ep. I. it has it all: action, scenery, drama, humor, suspense. the effects are more than superb, the jedi fight- scenes awesome, it has some good humor, quite a few subtle references to the "later" movies IV-V-VI. i am definitely going to see this one a second time in the cinema. it´s such a shame we have to wait till 2005 (aarggh) to see the next installment. a big hand for george lucas and consorts.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
great action pic with fantasy plot
i liked this one very much. can´t uunderstand why many people thought it to be mediocre. the action scenes are fantastic, the effects superb. i rather liked the mythological fantasy plot. and angelina joli is perfect as lara. thumbs up for this movie!
Mission to Mars (2000)
very bad script, good visual fx
What a terrible script. I and my friends actually had some laughs over this one! (where NOT intended!!) there are too many cliche's in this movie. It's a pity. as there is enough acting talent in this one (sinise, robbins) and the director brian de palma has prooved himself well in the past (Mission:Impossible). I was unimpressed by this one. Hardly worth the cinematicket, save for the sfx. Unlike in "apollo 13" you don't really care for the characters, when something (might) happen(s) to them.
Roland Robinson.
Gods and Monsters (1998)
great movie about human relationships
G.a.M. is a well written and well delivered story that captures the heart, is all about human relationships and emotions, and also looks upon homosexuality in a very human way. Performances are very good, emotions put across are believable and touching. Brendan Fraser is excellent, so is Ian McKellen. This is a movie that leaves you thinking about it after it has finished. In my opinion definitely one to watch, if you're into "intelligent" films!!!
