Glen or Glenda (1953)
Ed Wood Rocks.
Okay, Glen or Glenda is a really bad movie, Ed's penchant for wearing fuzzy angora sweaters is definitely not enough to pull this film out of the trash heap. Ed Wood was not a particularly good looking man so as you can imagine he is an extremely homely woman.
That being said, Ed Wood movies are so bad that I own almost all of them on tape. I am a big Wood fan. here is a guy with very little or no talent as a writer, actor, producer or director, yet he lasted in and around the periphery of hollywood for over 20 yrs. That says something about Wood's ambition. He tried, god knows the man tried. In his day, hacks and hams were not in vogue, but in our era you can make money and be very famous if you are an incredibly bad actor or director. That is because there is now a cheese factor attatched to movies and Ed Wood movies are some of the cheesiest selections of all times. (Arch Hall Jr. movies not withstanding)
Today millions of people know the name Ed Wood, Whether its the not so subtle message in Glen or Glenda or the pure schlock of Eds later movies like Jail bait or the infamous Plan 9 from Outer Space. You can say one thing about the man, there have been literally thousands of directors in film history and many good ones have been totally forgotten, but Ed Wood is remembered and even Glorified. Behold the power of cheese.
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Pearl Harbor is Sappy.
A fundamental question I pose to you...Does every movie have to have a love story attatched to it? I'm a huge movie fan and at times enjoy a good love story, But some movies don't need them. Pearl Harbor is one of those movies. I was in New York City when i saw this movie and while I thought that the action sequences were great, especially the air combat scenes, I found myself going to the restroom or snack bar during the incredibly sappy parts of this film.
Alec Baldwin plays a great Admiral Doolittle, Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett are good in their respective roles and have great interplay.
This film had the distinct opportunity to tell the story of an extremely historic event in the annals of U.S. History, But instead it winds up trying to tell three stories...The event...The two best friends Affleck and Hartnett...And the romance. I have seen many documentaries on Pearl Harbor with interviews of actual survivors and I can't recall one of them that had a love story attatched to them. The people who write, produce & direct these big budget flicks witout fail follow the same formula, and in that formula no matter what the plot of the movie is there is always a love interest.
This could have been a really good movie with much more information about the real event and much more badly needed action footage, but alas it fails because it is trying to please too many people. You cant'please everyone, it's an impossible task. The men that have gone and seen this movie all told me it had too much love story attatched to it. And the women i have spoken to were kind of indifferent to the whole movie.
Make a movie that appeals to the core audience you are shooting for...If it's an action movie then market it as such and leave out the love story because i can tell you we don't need it. If it's a love story you are making then market it as such and the people who are interested in that subject will go and see it. Lets face it even though action movies do not and will not win any oscars they still pay the bills at these studios..That 200 million dollars from an action movie will help finance indies and love stories which in turn will win academy awards.
STOP...STOP following the same old formula...break with the norm...believe me the public will embrace it.
As for this movie, love interest aside it's pretty good. action is good, cinematography is good, acting is good and the scenery is great. Overall i would give it a B-
Don't make the mistake and go into this movie thinking it will be all action or you will be sorely dissappointed.
Gladiator (2000)
gladiator/ ordinary film with an extraordinary title.
i guess maybe i was expecting too much of this film, and you know how it is, when you go in with high expectations, you almost always come away feeling a little cheated when it does'nt live up to the hype.. that's the way this gladiator was for me. the shots went so quickly i could'nt tell what was happening from a blow by blow standpoint and it made me dizzy. the best movie in my opinion that recreated sword, arrow, knives and other weapons of distruction in a period that was before the gun was braveheart... that's is what i measured this movie up to, and it did'nt measure up. along with battle scenes being frought with and overabundance of quick cuts, there were some non battle scenes that were just too long and boring.. so in my opinion battles scenes to quick short and jerky and a plot that an 18 yr old high school student could have written.
if you want to see good fighting and heroism, do not see gladiator...save your money and rent braveheart instead.
Laughing Boy (2000)
laughing boy withstands the wiener test of good movies.
i was very impressed with the movie laughing boy...iam not as long winded as some others and will not get into charaacter development or any other movie cliche reviews..
i'll make it short and sweet. first class direction, good acting good plot, good photography and editing. this movie is one of those movies that is worth seeing, not only becuse it was produced and directed by a hometown houston boy, but also because it is a good movie. in todays times with film budgets soaring way past the 100 million dollar limits, it is good to see that good movies can still be made by people who are out of the hollywood loop and on an extremely tight budget. people who make movies because they love making movies and are not at this very moment in it for the money...although i'm sure that brazil grisaffi would take some money if you gave it to him..
good movie....go see it if you can..........out
