'Allo 'Allo! (1982–1992)
a great series
24 March 2004
I have little to add to this what the other have written here. Accept that what few people seem to know. This brilliant series is a parody on another very good series, Secret Army, http://www.imdb.1eye.us/title/tt0075579/ The cafe, The Gestapo officers, the singing wife, even the characters look the spitting image. But, in all fairness, I think the parody is more brilliant than the original series. Strange, but true. I Think that this is one of the few cases where the parody is better know than the original, and a true red herring in that it is also better. I cannot think of one where this is also the case, although there are more parodies better known then the original (Airport-Airplane to mention one).

A good movie, however
1 February 2004
A good movie, however, it does not even come close to the original: Es geschah am hellichten Tag ( http://www.imdb.1eye.us/title/tt0051588/ ) I highly recommend to see this one as well.

Amsterdam in the early seventies
31 July 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Great to see this movie again. I just bought the DVD for 6 euros and it is worth it. A nice one. *spoilers* Glimmy, played by one of the greatest Dutch actors, Rijk de Gooyer, is a burglar. He has a bit of bad luck in an empty safe. A guy in a bar offers him 3000 guilders to find his runaway daughter and that is always nice. But Glimmy and his mate, De Bonk (Jon Bluming) get the feeling something is wrong. It's a trap, and the body's start to drop. Murder, intrigue, and nice pictures from Amsterdam as it was. Directed by Franz Weisz, a great Dutch director.

The Siege (1998)

I just saw this movie, on a friends recommendation, for the first time. I did not see it before since the trailers gave me the impression that this was an action(packed Bruce )movie, but it actually is a darn good thriller. The frightful thing is that the terrorism in NY is an scary but unlikely scenario in 1998 that became such a reality now. Indeed, NY is not under marshal law, but this is not the point. The scary thing is that how a few terrorists can put all the western world in such a state where civil rights are so under threat. In Europe politicians are now openly talking about putting the counter-terrorism in the hands of the military and the legalization of torture. The difference is that there is no need for a martial law as in the movie. The acting is very convincing and the characters are convincing, since they all have their flaws. I give it 8 out of 10.

Beyond, a nice try
8 January 2003
Warning: Spoilers
I just saw this movie, basically because we wanted to see a European film, so we rented this one.

**Spoilers**

The movie starts out okay, but the script is not developed all that well. It is nicely filmed, and the acting is not bad, but the story is not all that well developed, it had a lot more potential. Who was that Guy with the Tattoo, why is he injecting all the time, and what? who is the British businessman? Why does the shortwave radio work under water? What is that Buoy they fish out of the water? Maybe the subtitles where bad, but this movie could have used an half hour extra in story line (and some more sex, the girl was really hot) Like I said, the main storyline is not all that bad, but it has more potential. I give it 7 out of 10, and that includes bonus points for being low budget and European.

I liked the scenery, I have sailed where the story is supposed to be (I think the water was clearer there) and the décor of the U-Boot is really well done. I am basically surprised that you can make a movie that looks this well for this money.

Now here's a movie that I really likes
7 January 2003
Action, great actors, bad food, a good script, gross humor, sex and violence. really everything you would like in a great movie about a couple of gangsters in Liverpool. It is in the style of Lock, stock and 2 smoking barrels, snatch, and the likes. The plot is witty, turning and twisting, and not predictable. The acting is superb and the directing fast and furious (nothing to do with the movie with that name, that is). The camera and the editing work is great, best of Honkers I say. Pity them Honkers violence films get so little attention here.

Anyhow, go see it, rent the video, buy the DVD, enjoy this ultimate throw popcorn in your face movie. However be careful, you might choke whilst laughing.

Not all that bad
5 January 2003
Having read the book several times, and loving it, I was hesitant of seeing the movie. I do not normally like literature turned in to movie. It is like putting paintings into music. The movie is not all that bad, but there are several things I did not like about it. Why are the speaking English? Ridiculous, that is prostituting your language, synchronise it if you want to for the foreign market. Second, Jeroen Krabe is trying to hard and not able enough.

There was a high craftsmanship in the making of it, and was filmed well, but the effects at the end where best left out. I give it an 8 out of 10. Pieter

An exquisite comedy.
31 December 2002
Warning: Spoilers
(spoilers) In this movie we meet Heinz Erhard as a salesman in household goods. He is not very successful, he rather make people happy than make them pay. In the delightful comedy this is off course everything goes round. We seen him struggling is his wonderful way his fans can really appreciate. (do not miss the hilarious pool scene!). The plot gets more complicated when his niece falls in love with the son of his hire and fire boss. With the help of his former buddy's Heinz Erhard makes all the ends meet and there is truly a happy end.

They dont get much better than this
19 November 2002
I really enjoyed this movie, and am ever so happy I taped it at the time it ran on TV. The great thing about this movie is that it is so normal. A family driving to granny and telling the kids a story on the way. And then later how the kids are playing and weaving the story their parents told them in their play. I far prefer European films like this to the ones we get here from the states. Why, you wonder, well if this was made in Hollywood, an escaped gangster would have come along to steal the treasure and father would have taken revenge or something like that... No, the only thing that is a petty is that movies like this are not distributed main stream, but only in arty farty circles. So most movies like this will never reach main stream audience, or even will be distributed outside their originating country. I am pretty sure there are a lot of movies that are great, brilliant movies, but I will never get to see them, because of the distribution.

A good thriller
17 November 2002
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers This miniseries is about a couple of friends from the (German) army who hijack a couple of trucks filled with 5 mark coins, at the time they where silver, so this is kinda of a BIG Heist. They then park the lot in a former Mine and they live the good live. But slowly but surely their friendship becomes less and less, and the plot starts to thicken.

It has been years since I have seen this series, and would like a re-run.

Longest running sitcom ever
9 November 2002
This sitcom has been running solid since 1990, and like its predecessor at the time (zeg eens Aaaa)is the longest running sitcom in the world. It is a very typical Dutch comedie. I like it. Storyline is of two granddads living together in a big house with a single mom with two kids (it used to be a familie, mom dad and two kids, but they moved out) Nothing reallz happens, and most is comedy of errors, couple of side caracters are friends of one of the granddads who are slightly criminal. One of the granddads if conservative the other a socialist groeten Pieter

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie years and years ago in the cinema, and I quite liked it, I saw it later on Dutch TV and also liked it. However, having such good memories I bought it on DVD in Germany. This was a mistake. Not only this includes only the German soundtrack, but this is done well, and not all that bad, worse is,

Spoilers Spoilers Spoilers Spoilers Spoilers Spoilers

they cut out the really great scene's at the end. When dracula is chased by the farm hand and his arms are chopped of, basicly hacked to bits, spluf splatter and splif, no way to be seen. You will only see very little of the great gory scenes in the original movie. Very Very sad indeed.

A city portrait, seventies style
4 August 2002
We see a tale of the big city, in this case, Hamburg, more to the point, part of the Sankt Pauli district. From this part you can see the statue from Bismark, from behind, hence the title of this short film. It is a honest little film about the little people in the city. Nothing special, but neither are the people who are in this movie. This however has one great thing going for it: You see a very good picture of people in the early seventies

The Beach (I) (2000)
Nice and grimm
4 August 2002
I have to say, this is the first film I saw with de Caprio that I liked. His character was not really convincing, and I did not like the movie because of him. I liked the movie because of its blackness, its truth about how people really are. I will not spoil the movie, but let me tell you one thing I have never liked backpackers anyway. The plot was a bit like lord of the flies (the book, never saw the movie)but just a bit, mind. The main story here is that people not always what it looks like, and I am sure that somebody who, will write a lot off s*** about this movie about how this is a tale about the western world and bla bla bla. This is not the case. It is a movie that will show you how people really are. Have fun though watching it. Pieter

Great movie
21 July 2002
This is a great little film. A neat comedy of errors in charming flair of the early sixties. You cannot miss the very young Harald Juhnke in the Parade role of the buddy of our main character Adrian Hoven who plays the playboy Mark Fürberg. I will not spoil the great and surprising plot of this hilarious film, mainly because my belly is still hurting from the laughter. Another hilarious character is Hubert von Meyerinck in the excellent role of Hauptmann Hans Hajo von Gestern a fighter pilot veteran of the first world war who settled down in this wonderful village. Some great shots of a still unspoiled alpine landscape before mass tourism started. I give it 9 out of 10

Nice, and if you like food movies, great
11 May 2002
I like movies about food and this is why I liked this move very much. I also loved Tampopo or instance, even more than this movie. Anyhow, its a movie about learning a trade, about falling in love, about discovering talent, and growing it. There is a lot of talk in this movie, great little conversations. If you think that Chefs are not like this, I can tell you, they are! I have worked with many a chef like this one. I was dragged by the ear trough the kitchen, pointed out where I left spots. I was hit with the flat side on knives, My hand was put on the grill, believe me the chef in this movie is not anything special, nor especially weird. But I loved the movie. Pieter

A bit of a mess
9 May 2002
This movie has great camerawork, but thats about it. There is no story I could find accept for the boy releasing the goose. shame though, such great shot and so poorly edited and directed. This proves that you need more than nice pictures. Compare this to the work that the BBC (David Attenborough) put in his documentary's. And that is just for television! Give this man a budget to make a feature movie and you really would get great stuff. Anyway, I liked the shots in this movie, I liked what the director was trying to do, but allas, he failed.

Deligthfull
5 April 2002
I did not hear of this movie before and did not see clueless with which people seem to want to compare this movie to. So when I was travelling on a long train trip in Germany I watched this one on my laptop. (I do this a lot, had one of the first DVD laptops, and have to say, everybody who makes long journey's I can recommend it very much) I have to admit, much to the annoyance of a fellow traveller. He was irritated because I kept bursting out in laughter, I could not help it. What brilliant one-liners! This is a perfect ‘throw popcorn in your face movie'. One could not want more in a movie of this kind. I you are an art-house buff, the kind that only only likes six hour movies from Farawayistan, Weitfortistan or Achteraffie about a goat herder who gets her first period and a deep inner human portrait is painted you will not like this movie I take it. However, If you just want to be humoured, you will enjoy this movie.

Dumbo (1941)

A fine movie it is
5 April 2002
I saw 1941 last week and when the general watches Dumbo in the cinema it all came back to me again, and I ran out and got myself this movie. This was the first movie I ever saw in the Cinema, together with my father who died not long after. I was 4 or 5 at the time and I really was fascinated by it then and still am now, maybe it is because of the personal memories I have of it, maybe it is because this is a great move, but I think so. The scene where Dumbo is outside and is mother is behind bars, but still they are able to cuddle. This made me cry, just like the Major General Joseph W. Stillwell. The crows (I've seen a horse fly, I've seen a house fly, but I no nay never seen an elephant fly) the clowns, the magic feather. What a brilliant movie.

This movie made me cry
4 April 2002
This movie made me cry, some people say this about ET but for me it is this one. It is in my personal top 10 of best movies ever, cant say how high, but it is. It is the story that got me, it is about growing up, about people we lose, about love lost, about how things change. I will not spoil this movie for you by telling, but I thank god this movie made it in distribution outside Italy.

It is not a `trough popcorn in your face movie" although these movies frequent the cinema paradiso, as it does in all cinema's, and I can enjoy these, but this is not one of them.

I enjoyed this movie so much because I can relate to the story. I have a great love for cinema, and have, as everybody growing up, gone through the things the main character does.

One of the things I really liked is that all the loose ends that are thrown at you during the move are not lose ends, but all come together, every time I watch the movie I see new one's.

Schtonk (1992)
One of the most brilliant German movies
1 April 2002
This film is a must see for everybody who heard of the Hitler diary affair. Although the real affair is larger then life, and, according to many even more absurd that the movie, it is a must see.

The DVD is excellent, and I have watched it over and over again. Scenes are excellent, the way Christiane Hörbiger is addressed by Götz George, over and over again by the title of her late husband. His obsession for detail in restoring the ship he bought and finding Nazi `nick-nacks' It is all just too much to mention. One thing though, the better you know German, and Germany, the better you will understand the in-jokes. A lot of the humour is very subtle, and even in the comments here is misunderstood. Karl Schönböck for instance just claims to be an intimate friend of the Führer, he never was really, he is an fake, just like the diary's. He is brilliant at it. When Uwe Ochsenknecht is selling a painting of Eva Braun he just painted, as an original, Karl Schönböck claims he was there when Hitler painted it. The film just goes on and on like a rollercoaster and it is just unbelievable that Stern fell for this one. When something sounds to good to be true, it is, is a wisdom many people do not seem to have. However, like in House of Games, David Mamets brilliant movie on how scams work, you cannot cheat an honest man.

See this movie, buy the T Shirt, read the book, and never trust somebody who wants to make you rich.

Amusing
1 April 2002
I had a great time watching this movie, brilliant fotografie, great acting. Specially Heinz Erhardt. 3 old friends are going on a cycle holliday, like they did 20 years ago. Inge Meysel is much younger here then she is now, but, like today a great comedy actress. A real treat of the 50" when the roads would still enable you to have a cycle holliday and watch the countryside (some very nice scenery in this movie) instead of the traffic.
