Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: OVA: Super Danganronpa 2.5 Nagito Komaeda and the Destroyer of Worlds (2017)
Everything the Despair Arc should have been
Just watching this made me wish they took the Despair Arc in this direction. I really think that focusing more on the 77th class would have been the better route to take, and this shows it. Watching Nagito interact with his classmates is the highlight of this ova. For people who like dubs I highly recommend the English dub of this, that you can find it on YouTube.

Taking a look at the Hope Arc
While I can understand why people can not like this series. It has some writing problems and some of the characters are not that great, but it still has something to it. I can of see why some people do not like because it was made into an anime instead of a video game . I really feel this is more of an advantage because I do not think this type of story could have been told throught the visual story style the games had. There is too much fast pace action and the anime format really help in this department. While this series does nothing by itself. Ridding on the coat tails of the two games before this really makes the series. The only way I can descried it is in a Star Wars way. It really reminds me how the Clone wars TV show made the Prequels better. This series made the two games that preceded it better. And that is why I recommend it for any fan of the game series.
Taking a look, a just the Hope Arc while it is good it just makes you wish that this arc is not just one episode. While you can argue that bringing back the 77th class was a bit stupid I find that its pretty cool to see them all fighting and working together. The dynamic between the 77th class and Ryota at the end is very touching. While this is a great scene, I find it really makes Makoto's journey in the Future Arc seem somewhat pointless. While this episode mostly focuses on the 77th class it focuses on them too much. It basically pushes aside all the character from the 78th class and makes them feel not important in this episode. I blame this problem on the arc only being one episode. Also, I hate to bring this up but Kyoko's death. They should have just killed her off. Instead, they are all wishy washy about it because she took some miracle drug that none of the other characters considered taking. They do not even have a good scene to bring her back to life. She just appears for the last scene of the episode during the credits. Overall it's a good ending but it just makes you want more from it.

Taking a look at the Despair Arc I found that I enjoyed it much more then the Future Arc. The bouncer tone at beginning really works for this arc and it slowly turns darker and more disturbing as the series goes on. While this arc mainly works as a prequel to the first two games, it also has some plot arcs that contribute to the characters in the Future Arc, but most are so underdeveloped that it barely matters. The only two new characters that the Despair arc really does justice is Ryota and Chisa. The main draw to this series is the appearance of the characters from the second game. Unfortunately, most of these characters are down graded to a funny line here and there and that is it. Really, they only use five characters from to really developed the plot. I find this to be a huge let down. On top of that they only focus on these characters in the first 4 episodes. Once Junko enters the series in episode 5, she basically takes over this arc and this is where I think the series diminishes a bit. But once class 77 and Junko stories cross paths the series starts to pick up again. I also think they missed a huge opportunity to show us more about Mukuro since she is the most mysterious character in the first game. Instead, they downgraded her to a masochist henchwoman.
Looking at the positive side to this series I found that this series started off better then the Future Arc did. The first few episodes are so fast and filled with energy it just makes you laugh like crazy. This series also gives us a lot of background on events that have happened before the first game such as the murder of Natsumi , the student council killing and many more. I know it is a downside that they really misused the cast from Danganronpa 2 but the 5 character they did pick if feel were good choices. The main 5 are Hajime, Chiaki, Nagito, The Imposter and Mikan. In my option if they only had to pick only five it would be these five. As I find them to be some of the better and more interesting characters from the second game. I find that this arc has the best scene in the series in it and that has to be Chiaki's death. Seeing her slowly get torture and then slowly die in front of Hajime/Izuru is not only heart breaking but is also a tearjerker.
For best episodes I feel that the better episodes are here in the Despair Arc rather than in the Future Arc. I also feel that fans of the games could watch a random episode in this arc and still enjoy it. For my favorite episodes I would say they would have to be episode 1,7,8 and 10.

Taking a look at the Future Arc
While I can understand why people can not like this series. It has some writing problems and some of the characters are not that great, but it still has something to it. Taking a look at just the Future arc I feel that the writing is most of the new characters are either ok or just straight up bad. I really feel that this was the whole appeal of the games. That you go on this adventure with likable character, then boom one of them is dead and one of the other characters is the killer. When you take the likeable charter part of the equation you get the who cares syndrome. Let me this series really has a problem with the who cares syndrome. Some characters literally get no development and are just there to heighten the body count. Other characters get little snippets of charters development here and there both in the future are and the despair arc, but it is not focused on enough for it to fully develop. This is most noticeable in the "love tringle" arc between Munakata, Chisa and Juzo. While Chisa is the most developed of the three( this is because of her part in the Despair arc) the other two just seem like jerks the whole series and this makes their redemption arc almost worthless. This series also has a real problem with fake out deaths this series had. I found that this really undermined when characters actually died especially when Kyoko supposedly dies. . I find that this is a I as watched this I always felt that it was missing something umm Monokuma. Yea he is barely in the future arc, that like having a Micky Mouse cartoon without Micky Mouse. Way to go at not having the series mascot barely in this series.
While this review has been pretty negative so far there are many redeeming qualities to this arc and that is all of the returning characters. The main three they forced on are Makoto, Kyoko and Hina. Since we already had a whole game with this series, we already know these characters and every scene with these characters are golden and by far the highlight of this arc. Even Byakuya, Hiro , Toko heck even Komaru and Monaca even make appearances. While their appearances are much shorter then the other three every scene, they are in is golden and just makes you wish they played a more important part in the series. As I mention earlier most of the new characters are undeveloped but not all. I found that Ryota is a pretty well written character. I found that it really helped that they focused on his character in both arcs and that really help his character. By far the best new character story arc is the one between Seiko and Ruruka. These two characters get one episode in each arc focused on their relationship. This arc is not only well written but is genially heart breaking. The only downside I found to this arc is it had no effect on the overall plots. If they took this route on giving each of the new characters, their own episodes then I think they could have made this series much better.
As for best episodes I feel that it is really hard to pick since the series is so connect to each other and it should be watched as a series and not really just one episode. Ignoring that fact, I was a fan of episodes 5,8 and 9.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: The School of Hope and the Students of Despair (2016)
The end of the series
While it is a great final episode, it is just too short. It really makes you wish that it were at least 3 episodes. This episode is just too fast pace, and everything is warped up before you can even question what just happen. Hajime coming in the last second and saving the day really undermines Makoto and makes his journey in the future arc seem a bit pointless. Oh, and Kyoko come back in the end credits fells really tacked on. While it is a good end to the series it just makes you wishing it was longer.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: It Is Always Darkest (2016)
What the heck?
Ok this episode is kind of weird. We find out that Tengan was basically trying to gilt trip Ryota in to broadcasting his hope video. While this is a great concept it kind of gets thrown out the window. Why did Tengan just straight up not ask him to broadcast the video? After getting by the flaw, I really like them making Ryota a some what of a villain. That he thinks what he is doing is right and he is the hero in his own story. The whole Junko and Chisa watching the whole thing is also really weird. Overall is not a bad episode but it is kind of weak for ending an arc.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: Goodbye, Hope's Peak High School (2016)
Bonus episode?
I kind of see this as a bonus episode. How can you top the death of Chiaki? Short answer is you don't. This episode starts the remnants of despair journey while also starting the 78th classes journey in the first game. The problem is they really don't focus on either of these very much and its kind of all over the place. I really wish they focused on the beginning of the 78th class as I felt that is something they really did not touch in this series. Overall, not the best episode in the series and really wish they ended it with the last episode as that would have been the perfect ending of this arc.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: All Good Things (2016)
The next generation of killing games
Finally, in this episode we get all the answers to this new killing game. Turns out that everyone is the attacker and that everyone has been killing themselves after being brainwashed. People either like this arc or hate it. I think it is interesting that it is not just the same rehashed killing game like in the last two games. The highlight of this episode is when Makoto decides to watch the brainwashing video. What we see is all the characters from the first game as they taunt Makoto about being alive. This is a great scene and something out of the twilight zone. The arc between Juzo and Munakata is also in this episode and while I am not a fan or this arc, after this episode I am still not a fan. These two characters barely get any development the whole series and now I am supposed to feel for them. Anyways still a good addition to the series.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: Smile At Despair in the Name of Hope (2016)
They finally did it
They did it, they finally did it. As audience member we all knew Chiaki was not going to survive the series and all I can say that this could have been a perfect episode but there where a few things that just knock it down a bit. For one thing the story arc that Kuzo is gay for Munakuta just came out of nowhere. I already thought the love triangle arc they had going was undeveloped, but I feel this just makes it worst. Now let us talk about the main highlight of this episode Chiaki's death. Not only does she get killed she gets tortured. She is put in a dungeon and is slowly hurt by all type of Indiana Jones style traps. All this is being done while her fellow classmates watch, and Junko taunts her. I am really not a fan of Junko taunting her as I feel that it really takes away from scene and I would wish she would just shut up. This episode saving grace is its final scene. Chiaki dying words as she talks to Izuru who she once knew as Hajime is not only heart breaking but its by far the saddest scene in the whole series. I highly recommend this episode as I think it is one of the best episodes in the despair arc.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: Death, Destruction, Despair (2016)
Hope Vs Hope
After the last episode where Kyoko "died" we get to see the toll this takes on Makoto. We then see that Makoto get the courage to Munakata again. In the end Munakata just basically beats up Makoto. The main point of this episode is they are trying to set up some sport of parallel between Makoto and Munakata. That they have both lost a loved one due to despair and that in the end they are fighting for the same thing, Or I am just overanalyzing it. I don't know watch the episode and see what you think. By far the best part of this episode is the flashbacks as it adds both to Makoto's lost and Munakata's lost. As an audience we really need this as Munakata character just seems like a jerk up until this part of the series.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: Chisa Yukizome Doesn't Smile (2016)
Building up towards better things.
Another good episode but this episode is mostly used to set up an upcoming plot. Most of the plot is focus on Chiaki and that is all great, but it does not get resolved in this episode. We also get a plot arc with Junko and Ryota but again it seems it is just setting up something later again. By far the best part of this episode is Chisa's brainwashing scene because of how disturbing it is. Overall, it is a good episode but not the best the series has to offer.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: You Are My Reason to Die (2016)
The need for hope outweighs the need for despair.
Another great episode. We finally see Makoto, Hina and Kyoko team up for the first time since the first episode. The arc between these three and Ryota are the highlight of this episode. We also get to see the end of Rurka's arc, and it is sad to see her go. We also see some character development between Juzo and Munakata but again it is not focus on enough for us as an audience to care. In the end we see Kyoko dies while it is a very sad scene especially because of Makoto's reaction. I already know they are going bring her back because this series likes its fake out kills. None the less another great episode of the series.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: The Worst Reunion by Chance (2016)
look how they massacred Mikan!
What the heck did they do to Mikan in the episode? I do not know whether to give this episode a 1 or a 10. Anyway, fans of the games will like this episode because it give some background on Mikan and why she is the way she is in the 3rd trial. While it great to see this plot unfold I can't help but point out she is supposed to have despair not be sex crazy. Getting off the Mikan arc we get to see Chiaki and Nagito team up as they meet Junko for the first time this whole scene is great and as a viewer, I am excited to see where they go from there.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: Who Killed Cock Robin (2016)
Elementary my dear Watson
Finally, we get a Kyoko focus story arc in this series. We get to see the cold-hearted Detective Kyoko solve the whole murder in one episode and it is a great call back to the games. We also get to see the end of the small story arc Kizakura had. While it is a very touching ending, I wish they would have focused on it more in the other episodes because I feel that this arc could have been expanded on. Despise this small set back another great episode of the series.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: The Biggest, Most Atrocious Incident in Hope's Peak High School's History (2016)
A change of tone for the series
In this episode the tone of the despair arc becomes darker. Everything is pushed aside for the Junko and Mukuro plot to bring despair to hopes peak academy. This can either be big downside or a huge upside. I find it to be a huge upside because we get to see the start of the Tragedy of Hope Peak Academy. The Tragedy is the best part of this episode. We see Junko convince the Hopes Peak Academy student council to kill each other with ease. Next, we get a great montage of all the student killing each other. This is a great episode because we get to see an event happen that was told throught exposition in the games. Overall a great episode for any fan of the game series.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: Ultra Despair Girls (2016)
return of the Despair Girls
This episode takes a break from the main plot and its darker tone and instead looks at the ultimate despair girls arc created by the game. Its nice to see Komaru and Toko back at it again. Some of the parts where Toko is genocide Jill can kind of be cringe especially when she fantasizes about Byakuya. These scenes still fit with the show especially the tone of this episode. It is also lame that Monaka just gives up and then leaves. In the end it is still a solid episode especially for fans of the ultimate despair girls video game
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: A Despairfully Fateful Encounter (2016)
A plan is forming
We start to see the Junkos plot of despair start to form as both Izuru and Junko meet for the first time and it great to see the contrasts in personality. Its also great to her to get shut down by Izuru. Also, we get to see some character development between Juzo and Chisa. Sadly, this plot is pushed to the side in this episode in favor of the Junko arc and that is somewhat of a letdown.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: No Man Is an Island (2016)
Return of the king
We start to see new plot point unfold in this episode. At the beginning of the episode, we see that Kyoko has been killed, but this is just played for shock value, this is not the first time this has happed. We get to see some detective work from the cold-hearted Kyoko because one of the many cannon fodders characters was killed that we barely knew. Also, we get to see the return of Byakuya and Toko as they are now brought into the plot of the show which is a great addition. Also, Hiro is still outside the building being useless. None the less another great addition.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: Beginning of the End (2016)
The lines start to cross
This episode starts to bring back the bouncy nature of the first two episodes a bit. It also brings a lot of character to the ultimate imposter and how he took over Ryota's identity and its really cool to see how he imposters other people since we did not get a lot of information about that in the game. We also get some funny scenes with Mikan which are always great to see. Near the end of the episode, we are introduced to Junko whose mannerisms are raised to an 11. While it seems her sister Mukuro mannerism is almost a 0. Its nice to see the two classes arcs are finally starting to cross paths.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: Who Is a Liar (2016)
Action packed episode
A very action-packed episode always got to have some action. We get to finally know why Munakata is against Makoto, but it is not expanded enough for it to make a good reason and makes him look like a jerk more than a Villain. Also, Seiko reason for pursuing Izayoi and Ruruka is not great either and just makes her look crazy. In the end another great episode that somehow did not kill of one of its many cannon fodder characters and might I add its great to see Monaka back in action.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: Dreams of Distant Days (2016)
Some backstory for the new characters
Wow very underrated episode. We finally get the backstory of 4 of new characters. We get a great debate between Tengan and Munkata. The real showstopper of this episode is the backstory and conflict of Seiko and Ruruka. It is one of those conflict that is debatable who is in the wrong and it is also debatable that they could be both wrong. The flash back scenes are both very touching and sad and they really add to the episodes . In the end we lose both Tengan and Seiko and for the first time I feel an emotion for the characters that have died.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: The Melancholy, Surprise, and Disappearance of Nagito Komaeda (2016)
Nagito back at it again
Finally, we get a Nagito focused on episode. It always great to see the interworking of his mind and see his plan unfold of trying to get the exam canceled. We also get to see some backstory with Ruruka and Seiko and why they hate each other, and the best part is it was all Nagitos fault. While Nagito thinks his plan failed it successfully working was funny to see because his ultimate luck. In the end kind of a weird episode with a giant dog and explosions but still a good addition.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: A Farewell to All Futures (2016)
show starts to slow down but that is not a bad thing
Show finally starts so slow down from its bounce off the wall pacing and we get an emotional and despair ridden episode. We get some great scenes with Hajime and Chiaki and they start to form a relationship. We also get the see the events of the backstory of the second case of the second game play out. In the second game the whole backstory was told throught an arcade game, but now we get to see how it unfolded from another point of view and it that really added to the series and the game. This whole episode also really adds to Mahiru character. I am going to ignore the fact that they do not match up perfectly but hey not everything can be perfect.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: Cruel Violence and Hollow Words (2016)
Wow what a shocker
When I thought that they were going to bring Hina back in the series in a later episode I never thought they would do it in the first 30 seconds of the next episode. What a cheap fake out. Oh, then one of the cannon fodder character is found dead. We start seeing the split-up groups have conflicts with each other, but it feels random because we do not know the characters to enough know why they are at each other's throats. Other then the cheap fake out another good episode.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen: My Impurest Heart for You (2016)
Jeez will this show slow down
This show has still not slowed down and is still bouncing off the walls, but that is not a bad thing. The best scenes all have to do with Hajime before he got into the academy and Chiaki making friends with her classmates. The scene where they play N64 is great seeing all our favorite characters playing games. Also, the scene where they all drink the soap and become sex crazy is kind of weird and cringe but some how it still fits with the tone of the show. Overall a good episode.
