Napoleon (2023)
7/10
Rating a Film is not easy..
20 February 2024
Rating a Film can be difficult and conflicting if you care deeply about films, and aspects such as historical accuracy, action, philosophy and ability to engage.

I acknowledge that there are plenty of (some glaring and brazen) historical inaccuracies here*. And as a lover of history/war history, this is not ideal. Although artistic liberties for dramatic effect have worked at points to make the film very engaging e.g. At the Battle of Austerlitz, not to give too much detail away.

*But as Scott Ridley says- 'How the f would you know? You weren't there!!'

The battle scenes are phenomenal and intense, and they do captivate you from start to finish. They are the highlight of the movie for me.

They do help you to appreciate the staggering scale of Napoleon's ambition and impact on Europe and its people.

But condensing Napoleon's life into one movie is as ambitious as the man himself, and it does feel too rushed. There is just not enough context and explanation given for his campaigns.

Napoleon is hardly flattered or glorified, and portrayed as often unstable, erratic and fragile. Though many French people loathe this, I appreciate it because it reminds us that he is human. And you can't gloss over the fact that his wars have resulted in 100's of thousands of deaths. We don't think about Napoleonic soldiers in the same way that we sympathise with those of WW1 and WW2, but they were no less human.

Perhaps the worst thing is the amount of time showing the complicated and strange romance between Napoleon and Josephine, which I personally almost couldn't care less about. Though it showed a human side to Napoleon that most probably have never thought about. But there is simply too much of it - why?? It is boring and better cut down.

Inception (2010)

Convoluted..I cannot believe that the majority of the general population could reasonably follow the plot of this film

Convoluted..just too convoluted and complicated.

Interstellar is a beautiful film, but this .. is an incoherent jumble and muddle of ideas and concepts. Though they'd have been theoretically very interesting and thought provoking if manageably used.

Its basic premise is intriguing and thought provoking, but I was annoyed and eventually bored by its overambitious and confused plot.

People who liked it must be very patient, willing and/or able to make sense of it much better than I do, though I don't consider myself unintelligent..

Films like this make me think..are people too shy or lazy to post reviews/ratings that go against the majority?? Because I cannot believe that the majority of the general population could reasonably follow the plot of this film.

Though it has been years and I will give it another watch to try and make better sense of it.

Poor Things (2023)

A reminder that ratings are subjective. Warning: DON't watch it with your parents!

This film is a reminder that ratings are actually almost entirely subjective, and that no matter how acclaimed or highly rated it is, you can be disappointed. In fact, the more you pin your expectation based on amazing ratings, the more likely you are to be disappointed. So my mistake on that part.

WAY too many unnecessarily explicit and long sex scenes.

Slow moving.

All the more interesting things happen in the plot at the very end.

Bella's 'discoveries' of aspects of the world are deep and meaningful, especially her discovery of inequality and indifference of humanity to others' suffering.

Funny and quirky with an interesting plot, but I just really don't agree with the +8/10 rating.
