Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Clever, witty, and very entertaining
At first, I wasn't at all interested in seeing Pirates of the Caribbean, but, after I rented it and watched it, I realized what a cool movie it is. Its really clever.
I likes most of the actors. Johnny Depp never really caught my attention before this, but, since now, I have been waiting anxiously to see him reprise his role as captain Jack Sparrow. Kiera Knightley and Geoffrey Rush are excellent as well. Now, on the other hand, Orlando Bloom sort of bugged me. He didn't seem to fulfill his character as well as he could have. But, luckily, this didn't detract from the movie too much.
Pirates of the Caribbean had a very original story line. Packed with witty, funny lines and very clever dialog, it never ceases to entertain. While I found some lines a little bit hard to understand, I thought it was very well done.
Last, the special effects were really amazing. When the pirates turned into their ghostly form, I found the skeleton effects incredibly real looking. Never inconsistent or weak, the effects were done to best possible degree.
So, having said all that, the bottom line is this: I would recommend Pirates of the Caribbean to anyone who enjoys an action/comedy about some pirates of the high seas.
After the Sunset (2004)
Welcome to Paradise
I have to say, this movie was pretty darn good. It proves that Pierce Brosnan still has it in him. Congratulations! After the Sunset has some good actors in it, all of whom played their roles satisfyingly. Pierce Brosnan, Woody Harrelson, Salma Hayek, and Naomi Harris all did fantastically. Ohh, I almost forgot, Don Cheadle is in it as well. He always does great.
Along with being a crime type movie, it was also pretty funny. It had a few good crack-up lines, mostly from Woody Harrelson, but, maybe one or two from Brosnan. I laughed a fair amount.
One problem is some of the things that happen. Now, I'm not going to name off anything that happens, but a few events seemed a little bit far-fetched to me. But hey, thats just me.
In conclusion, After the Sunset is a fun action/crime/drama/comedy that is loads of fun. See it for yourself.
Ultraviolet (2006)
Are you serious?
I am going to start off with a very firm opinion. Ultraviolet is ultra-bad. How could this even be a movie? There is only one movie that this could possibly be compared to. Aeon Flux. And that wasn't even that great. But when it is compared to Violet, it seems like the perfect movie. Aeon Flux had substance and a semi-decent story, whereas Ultraviolet is just senseless fighting and really, really bad dialogue.
The only good thing about Ultra-whatever is the fighting. It had very cleverly choreographed fight scenes. But even this couldn't make up for it. Some of the scenes in this movie have no point whatsoever. I think that the worst part of this movie was dialogue. if you don't have good dialogue, there isn't much of a movie. Lines like, "Are you mental?" or "You got hemo blood on me" were just a few of the bad, bad lines.
Milla Jovovich and Cameron Bright are both very disappointing in this movie. I thought that Milla was capable of better. I am also angry that William Fitchner accepted to be in such a terrible movie. i generally think he's a good actor.
Bottom line: Bad movie, don't see it. Thats final.
Click (2006)
Completely Unexpected
When i first heard of this, i thought that it would be stupid. All Adam Sandler movies seem to have no story and lots of dull humor. At first, Click seemed the same.
The movie starts off with some good jokes, and some particularly bad jokes. Then, when Sandler gets the remote, everything gets funnier. Some of the things he uses the remote for are hilarious.
Then everything begins to go wrong. And everything about the movie takes an unexpected twist. It becomes serious. It becomes a movie with a message. Unlike another senseless Sandler comedy, it takes on a meaning.
The cast was great. Adam Sandler and Kate Beckinsale worked very well together, just like a married couple. Their kids were surprisingly good as well. Sandlers mother (played by the woman who voices Marge Simpson) and father are a great crack-up together.
The verdict is this: Click is surprisingly well done, and surprisingly better than any other Sandler movies. The final meaning of the movie is powerful. Go see it to find out what it is!
The Omen (2006)
Creepiness
Please allow me to start off by saying that I have not seen the original. However, I really enjoyed this movie for the following reasons.
1. All of the actors were great. Liev Schrieber does well, as always, and Julia Stiles plays a great desperate mother. And then there is Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick. He is probably the creepiest kid I have ever seen. For a first movie, he did excellently. Also, I thought that Mia Farrow was really good as a demonic nanny.
2. It made me jump. A lot. In The Omen, there are some scenes that you automatically know will make you jump, but, there are also some that you don't expect. This movie made me jump more than The Exorcist.
3. First rate suspense sequences. During the most on-edge parts, everything (including soundtrack, set and lighting) seem to come together and make everything perfect and give the viewer the ultimate ride.
The Verdict:
Was it the best movie I've seen: No Was it enjoyable: Yes Was it scary: Yes Should everyone else see it: Yes
Underworld: Evolution (2006)
"What have you done?"
To answer the question, what the director, Len Wiseman, has done is create a truly incredible action/ horror movie. With Underworld Evolution, Wiseman accomplished everything that he had wanted to put into the first.
To begin with, I would have to say that the plot is fantastic. I've always liked this sort of movie, but with everything that happened with this, it was a notch above average.
Next, the characters were very well acted out. Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman play the perfect Selene and Michael. They have great chemistry between the two of them, and act well on their own as well.
Special effects were breath taking. In the fight scenes, the special effects for lycans, Michael the hybrid, and the vampires were incredibly well done.
Last but not least is the action scenes. The fights, which the movie is mostly composed of, were incredibly well laid out and executed perfectly.
Hats off to Len Wiseman for creating a worthy, better-than-the-original sequel.
Phenomenal!
Underworld (2003)
Awesome Movie!
I thought that this movie was excellent. Now, I only saw it a few weeks ago when I rented it, and I liked it so much that I went out and bought it.
To start, I thought that the actors were perfect for the movie. They (Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman) worked extremely well together. Considering that this was mainly an action movie, I must say that all of the action sequences were very well done. The fights were well choreographed and quite realistic. Also, the creature effects were great, and definitely not overdone like they were in Van Helsing. The special effects were top notch, and the movie crew got everything right.
Normally, with a movie that has vampire's and werewolves, it is lame (and the whole story had been done before). With Underworld, the director put a new twist on all of the aspects of vampires vs. werewolves.
Now that the sequel had already been in theaters, I can only wait for it to come out on DVD, and I am certain that i will buy it.
If you like this genre, watch Underworld, and you will not be disappointed.
