Mank (2020)
4/10
Pretension of the worst kind
16 December 2020
All style and no soul. A vacuous vessel. Eminently unwatchable. Coppola discussed the pitfalls of making a pretentious film in the Doc, Hearts of Darkness, when deriding his own struggles with Apocalypse Now. A snail's pace requiring a 20 minute catnap for miraculous completion. This coming from someone quite comfortable with Kubrick's pacing; the only Director worth mention. My how the mighty have fallen; this and the Laundromat. I am not sure what Oldman is thinking these days. That movie offered gratuitous, gruesome violence out of left field not worthy of completion. Filth masquerading as art. Back to Mank. What Hollywood movie would be complete without the requisite recycled Socialist sympathies and propaganda. Nothing could be more appropriate for 2020. I will never get those 2 hour and 11 minutes of my life back. Do yourself a favor and leave it out.

Orwell is uniquely unqualified
18 July 2020
The more you learn about George Orwell, the more you realize how confused he actually was. The man was a member of the Labour party and a devout democratic socialist. He simply did not prefer the Soviet execution or brand of socialism. It would be like Bernie Sanders writing a novel critical of the Soviet Union. You know, he prefers the democratic socialism of Denmark. However, anyone with a few brain cells, a modicum of logic and a calibrated moral compass reject all forms of socialism. This as its anti-freedom and always ends up the same way. I.E. see 120 million murders via the various forms of socialism in the 20th century. This film is truly muted and uninspirational; given the background of its author this is no surprise. The only thing novel about the movie is how massive Suzana Hamilton's bush is and how much it's shown.

In conclusion, leave it out, mate.

Guilty As Carol Baskin
17 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler: Patrice's husband, who was 20 years her senior, is guilty as sin in the court of public opinion. This smug little man is the epitome of strange agent. He changed the locks on her son the day after she went missing. He's shaking during these interviews. He said some of the most bizarre, inane things you would ever hear from a "victim. " Both her son and good friend agree; they also reference the possibility of impending divorce. The son, who is very credible, references them fighting often. It's just simply seems as though he farmed out the wet work. Rob Endrés is as guilty as Carol Baskin.

Topical for COVID-19 Tomfoolery
30 May 2020
I would highly recommend Dick Jewell. There is nothing new under this sun. Although the events in this movie took place in 1996, the movie is incredibly topical. IT JUST SO HAPPENS TO ILLUSTRATE THE CORRUPTION OF THE GOVERNMENT AND THE MEDIA. It reveals their house of cards, their unscrupulous morality and their underhanded methodology. Sound familiar? This as the ends always justify the means, when you have no soul or moral compass. Get the story or solve the case, in this instance. ANY ENTITY THAT ATTEMPTS TO CONTROL YOUR FREEDOM AND OR THE NARRATIVE IS ALWAYS NEFARIOUS. Furthermore, it was directed by Clint Eastwood, stars Sam Rockwell, John Hamm, and Paul Hauser is a Michigander. Do it, do it; you'll learn something and be entertained at the same time.

The Gentlemen (2019)

Reference Sickboy
3 February 2020
I need to preface the following, by stating that I like Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding and Guy Ritchie is a BJJ Black Belt. I also own Snatch, and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. That being said, the movie was an empty suit, a hollow shell. It was completely void of the humor one comes to expect from Guy Ritchie or the convoluted intersecting plot lines that come together in the end. The femme fatale had zero sex appeal. Zero fun. I realize this is anecdotal evidence, but people walked out. As a fly on the wall, in the restroom taking a leak, the sentiment was similar. Not sure how it is 8.1. The masses know very little. I'm already making allowances for one of the two most trite, formulaic genres, the gangster flick. I'm reminded of Sickboy's pearl of wisdom in Trainspotting. The first one, as I don't recognize the abortion of a sequel. "It's certainly a phenomenon in all walks of life. What do you mean? Well, at one time you've got it, then you lose it and it's gone forever. All walks of life..... " All I'm trying to do Mark, is to help you understand that The Name Of The Rose is merely a blip in an otherwise uninterrupted downward trajectory." Guy Ritchie also shits on Coppola's masterpiece, The Conversation. An original idea which illustrates the paramount importance of intonation. Nearly 2 hours of my life that I will never get back. Leave it out mate.
