Wellmania (2023)
S1 Episode 6 is a masterpiece
Wellmania is the must see show of the year. The writing is incredible, the acting is top tier and the casting captures a rare spark/chemistry between characters that is like winning the lottery.
Wellmania has a great mixture of comedy, tragedy and lessons learned and once again .. the writing is unbelievable... as the viewer gets to realize the answers before LIV does and gets to experience catharsis in seeing LIV find the answers.
Wellmania is laugh out loud funny and has true grit. .. This show takes risks and digs deep into those underlying factors that drive us all but that we rarely get to see or understand in ourselves.
The truth about ourselves is not always the voice that we present in public... the truth is that inner voice that we argue with and attempt to alter to justify what we think we want... and this show demonstrates this well.
The Ark (2023)
Excellent premise, writing and acting
I have seen two episodes of The Ark so far and I love the show.
There is complex character and story development as well as likeable/relatable characters and story lines.
I think that the special effects are excellent.
It is refreshing to see such a relative unknown and talented young cast introduced to viewers... at least for me, I do not recognize any of them but they are top notch actors.
I look forward to seeing the rest of the show and I hope that they can do more seasons.
I started watching The Ark when I saw that Jonathan Glassner was one of the creators as well as a writer on the show.
Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre (2023)
WOW I so enjoyed this
Wonderful to see Josh Hartnett in this film as he has a true star quality.
I noticed that in some scenes Josh towers over Hugh Grant and so in googling it ... Josh is 6'3 and Hugh is 5'11. Jason is 5' 8 3/4".. Aubrey is 5' 4" .. on another page it says 5'6". Point being is that Josh is incredibly tall.
Hugh Grant is an absolute delight in this film. My favourite role so far in all of his films. An actor at the top of his game. Very enjoyable, very funny ... a true masterclass at playing a villain.
Jason's action scenes are incredible to watch.
Aubrey Plaza is also great in this movie as the foundation/brains of the crew. Her wry sense of humour makes it hard at times to tell if she is being serious or not.
One of the last scenes of the film Aubrey says to Jason ... "I will be your corkscrew". Wtf? Was she being cynical/funny/sarcastic? Was she bonding with Jason? Who knows.
I hope that there is a part 2 to this movie.. I enjoy this crew and their exploits more than most other such franchises and they master mixing humour with action.
Resident Evil (2022)
It gets better
For some reason the full blown opening turned me off from the show a bit. I enjoy the slow burn into full blown apocalypse. But this show gets much better and the flashbacks mix well with the present day storylines. I see great actors, good editing ...although the writing is overly predictable. But this is a story adding onto a well established Resident Evil Universe and so the focus here is more on the personalities and action rather than making the story unpredictable.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Elysian Kingdom (2022)
This episode captures the original spirit of Star Trek
The writers had fun, the cast had fun and it was fun to watch... at times it seemed that the cast was just about to break the fourth wall and make comments directly to the viewers. I love that this was creative, experimental and a joy to watch ....wonderful Star Trek at its best.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
May I have some more please?
I would watch 10 seasons of this as a tv series. And Pedro Pascal...what a pleasure to watch. A whole world of comedy gold to be mined there. And Nicolas Cage .. a career that has some of the most memorable and comic/tragic scenes ever filmed.
Leaving Las Vegas has inspired and haunted me from the first time I saw it. The casino scene where Nic tips the table over screaming about his son....
But the Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent honours Nic's persona in such a delightful way... every scene was a treat and the movie ends way too soon.
Killing It (2022)
Oddly mesmorizing and funny
This show is tough for me to describe. There are moments that it is like a drab SNL skit and then there are moments that are laugh out loud funny.... in fact I give this show 10 stars because the funny scenes are so very funny and at times they tap into something new. Some new absurd look at society that takes the most pathetic of circumstances and turns us all into Don Quixote and states... it is OK to joust with windmills because frankly.... how we see life is more important than internalizing how it actually is. And in our search for gold... it is the friends that we make along the way .. But in particular the snake nailed to hand scene, the old man on the locker room floor scene and the entire business motivational seminar episode ... probably the most efficient parody that I have ever seen in media spoofing our current business mindset and skewed view of what success is and how people with a dream are harvested by capitalists in a similar way that the snakes are being caught out in the swamp.
Turning Red (2022)
Great Chinese/Canadian period piece.
I watched this with my 7 year old grandaughter and at one point she said. "Pause please". I paused it and she said, "What is a period?" .. and I briefly explained and she said "Ok, play please" .. and we continued the movie and went on with our lives. But interesting that her 3 favorite shows are Canadian .. Zombies, Descendants and now Turning Red. Great movie... many laughs. Relatable storyline. Well developed characters. The portrayal of the boy band was hilarious and yet I found myself wanting to buy their Album.
Stargate Universe (2009)
Some of the best Television ever made
Every episode is like a feature film. Well written and acted characters that stay with you long after the end of the two seasons. Real drama, gripping storylines and based on a mind expanding premise .. SGU ended too soon and will leave you wanting more.
The World According to Jeff Goldblum (2019)
Thank You Jeff
We have absolutely enjoyed this series. So many laugh out loud moments. There is something so familiar and intriguing about Jeff's commentary and approach to things. That moment on the cosplay stage where Jeff is surrounded by an entourage and a swordsman leaps up to attack him ... I have not laughed that hard for years. Also in the coffee episode where Jeff takes a drink of his coffee and grimaces like it is disgusting .. and spends the episode telling these coffee lovers that he quit coffee and prefers not to drink it ... and then golden moments like driving the RV out of the manufacturing plant with an Amish guy in the passenger seat while singing "Born to be Wild" .. By far our favorite tv series of the year. Thank you Jeff for entertaining us, making us think, educating us and bringing so much joy to our lives with your personality and style.
Silent Night (2021)
An absolute Masterpiece
My wife chose this movie and I was doing eye rolls the first few minutes wondering... WTF have I done here? Just another mindless "Hallmark" Christmas movie... I was sitting there staring out the window while we watched it... But something just felt a little bit off and this movie drew me in like a spider with an insect in its web.
I immensely enjoyed this film. Great counter/reverse psychology for our current political climate and some great "mind viruses" in this movie that will challenge any viewer to think.
But the "balls" this movie has...unbelievable.
The White Lotus (2021)
Best Show of the year
Fantastic writing, incredible acting ... a great location to play these stories out. We watched the series in a week and we have been talking about it ever since. White Lotus instantly became a frame of social reference as it captures racial, generational, socio economic, educational factors in the lives of the characters. I absolutely missed the point though of the Tanya and Belinda story ending. I thought that Belinda was crying from joy at being handed a bag of money and was relieved that she would not have to put up with Tanyas' needs anymore but still got the money. I've had it explained to me that Belinda wanted a partner and that it was Tanya's belief in her wellness centre that drove the idea and that Belinda felt betrayed and sad to simply be paid off and abandonned by Tanya. This was not my take at all. I really missed this plot line and it taught me something about myself. I am transactional and I empathized with Tanya in this situation...buy your way out of obligations and I thought tossing Belinda a envelope full of cash was awesome because in my experience with these types of financial social situations....the poor people just get used, lied to, made into servents and the rich guys fly off and forget all about all of it. The fact that Tanya threw her a bag of cash was far beyond what I have personally seen...this was very generous for these types of travellers. And so our reactions to the various storylines in White Lotus gave us many insights into ourselves .
Marathon (2021)
Loved this show
Better than most SNL skits. Great characters, funny jokes and personalities ... we had a great time watching this and the chaos of the race and the drama filled ending. Good chemistry between actors... I kept wondering why I have never heard of these actors before ... they deserve a national stage. Well done.
The Virtuoso (2021)
Watch this movie as a Dark Comedy
The Virtuoso has a "twin peaks" vibe. The narration style gives this movie added depth and humour. This movie is a dark comedy and I think this is why some viewers did not understand/like it. Abbie Cornish is one of the most beautiful women in the world and one of the most compelling actors. Anson Mount is the next big thing. Anson stars in Star Trek's new "Stranger Worlds" and captures the role of an "autistic", cold blooded killer whose humanity is beginning to seep through very well in The Virtuoso. Anthony Hopkins, Wow .. Enough said. This is a great movie and I hope that there is a part 2.
Volcanic UFO Mysteries (2021)
important doco that needs to be seen
Objects are being seen that cannot be explained. I enjoyed Stephen Bassett's and Jaime Maussan's commentary. Mr. Maussan does a good job of summarizing the evidence without jumping to conclusions.... Maussan makes it clear that he has some suggestions for what we are observing but that in fact...He has no idea what it is. This type of dialogue is important with this topic because we need to gather data and study these objects objectively. Scientific evidence legitimizes the study of UFO's and opens the door to a wider study and an increased opportunity to solve the mystery.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
I had no idea
I knew nothing about this show going in...just threw it on because I was bored. Thoroughly entertaining. I love the way they wait for awhile to introduce the mother as a Necromancer Android. It adds weight to the premise to have a "destroying angel" raising the kids. Of course most of you already knew this and thus the title of the show ... but fantastic show, great special affects and scenes that stay with you long afterwards.
Ted Lasso (2020)
A surprising comedy
As an American that has followed the EPL for the past 20 years, I found Ted Lasso lighthearted, laugh out loud funny and relevant. Yes, Football is the vehicle, but this show is about sincerity, heart, teamwork and finding true motivation. Futbol/football/soccer is the world's great unifying religion and introducing an American (Ted Lasso), to the sport of Football is a stroke of genius which allows for all viewers to find common ground in the sport and in sportsmanship/teamwork/cooperation ... these are universal truths that can be applied to achieving success in anything.
Deep Blue Sea 3 (2020)
Great Fun
We had a blast watching this movie. This show had some great scares and had us jump quit a few times.
Catch-22 (2019)
A joy from start to finish
Funny, griping, thought provoking, tragic and with the familiar tension of the book that builds and builds as John realizes that he is trapped and faced with absurdity. Beautifully filmed, stunning landscapes, well acted ... a true masterclass in film making. Scenes from this series stay with you long after the show ends.
Aladdin (2019)
A diamond in the rough
I was told not to watch this movie. I then saw the backlash online regarding this movie. Finally got around to seeing it and was blown away. Loved this movie. Enjoyed every minute of it. Disney did a great job of remaking this. Now I am going to watch Beauty and the Beast... another movie I was told to avoid. I suspect that it is awesome as well.
Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich (2020)
Great example of the Rich preying on the poor and escaping justice
This documentary is hard to watch but necessary viewing to understand how to stop present and future predators... and how broken the American justice system is and what needs to be done to fix it. Watching multiple Law Enforcement agencies trying to bring Epstein to justice only to be thwarted by some mystery deal that initially allows Epstein to walk free was an incredible indictment of the US justice system. Everyone involved in protecting Epstein from prosecution SHOULD BE IN JAIL including Ocosta. What an incredible miscarriage of justice. Here we have a wealthy criminal breaking laws in the financial system and preying on the most vulnerable young girls and the US system cannot stop him. The US Justice system is pathetic and broken. America is an empire in decline and this documentary explains why.
Space Force (2020)
loving this show
At a time when the USA is divided, Space Force is a show that mocks both sides and wants to meet in the middle. We are all Americans. Generally speaking we all have the same needs and goals. John Malkovich is the highlight for me of this new series and Malkovich singing "What a Wonderful World" was an absolute enjoyable surprise. Space Force has some rough edges but I think in time it will be funnier once this current political era is gone. Steve Carell is always incredible to me. Fred Willard is another shock in this series and his role in this series straddles the line between tragedy and comedy so tightly that I find myself holding my breath when he is on screen. Don Lake is the new Gomer Pyle and is the funniest part of this show. The cast is the most eclectic group of characters in any show and this is where Space Force excels.... a diverse group of people all thrown in together and solving problems together...just what the USA needs right now.
ZeroZeroZero (2019)
an absolute work of art
ZeroZeroZero is the tv event of the year and sets a new high standard for television and for movies. This show is finely crafted and puts the viewer there .. on the street, in the meetings, in the gun battles, in Mexico, In Italy with images and experiences that you will never forget. ZeroZeroZero is brutal, honest and so realistic that years from now you will struggle to separate your actual memories from some of the events and personalities of this show.
Hollywood (2020)
don't let your story go untold .....
I am speechless. Spent most of this tv series with a huge grin on my face. So much fun, so enjoyable ... such a moving and cathartic experience..
Downhill (2020)
I enjoyed this movie
Downhill is funny and tragic and ironic. I liked seeing the ski resort, the sled ride and the lifestyle there. Will and Julia were a pleasure to watch. I had flashbacks to Lampoon's Vacation movies and the commentary on relationships and family in our age was thought provoking and poignant. This is not a typical slapstick, toilet humour, SNL style movie. Downhill is subtle and thought provoking and made for a mature audience.
