James May: Our Man in... (2020)
Send this legend around the world please!
This is as funny as an idiot abroad while also showcasing Japanese culture, heritage and all of the country's highly beautiful, but strange weirdness! James May is sometimes a bit too informative in his ventures outside of Top Gear and The Grand Tour- but he also on other occasions hit the target right in the bullseye (for instance, when he built a human sized house out of the popular Danish Plastic Toy building system LEGO), and he has definately hit the mark perfectly here. Amazing to the point that when the last episode was over, sadness that there wasn't already a new Destination to watch him travel to or even scheduled to arrive in the future - I truly hope this is something he is open for in the future as I love his witty humor that perfectly balances out his almost savant level of intellect on multiple subjects.
the production company & camera team behind this project also did amazing work in researching, facilitating with local guides who were at many times hilarious counterparts to the sometimes snobby aristocratic nature of Mr. May, which is difficult given the language barriers, and differences in culture. The camerawork is also a great + in star rating as these types of shows tend to be filmed in a rather dated style (looking at you Discovery shows!). Please send this legend of a man around the world for humanity's sake!
Richard Hammond's Big! (2020)
Richard Hammond plays to his strengths and doesn't disappoint!
This show is already from only the first episode look like to be another great venture for Richard Hammond. It is highly entertaining while it also shows off the massive Volskwagen Factory in Wulfsburg with a lot of informative bitesize chunks of information on the technological processes behind making cars, while keeping the whole thing centered around how the factory still employs 65 000 workers in an industry that has the public view that "robots are replacing the humans". He also showcases the more niché technologies like audiovisual tools to track wear damage in their huge machines before parts fail, all while again using the human element to keep the whole thing deeply grounded. 1 star has been deducted due to the rather boring and dated filming style, it would have been great to see this being shot with higher quality lenses and cameras to really show the beauty of the machinery, and not just LOOK like every other Discovery show, because everything else about this project is amazingly well written and executed. Well done to everyone who worked on this!
True Life: Crime (2020)
First 2 episodes not great at all.
As another reviewer has mentioned, the first episode answers itself in the first 10 seconds of explaining what "crime" happened, which was tragic but definately not worth an episode. granted episode 2 is better than the first, it is highly dramatized and they go over the same information time and time again for what seems just to make the episode long enough- i'm sorry to everyone who worked on the show, the host journalist is actually really good, but that is basically the only positive thing i can say about this show. definately not worth a watch. and what the heck is the guy from MTV's Catfish doing in this show? he only serves the purpose of talking for 20-30 seconds before each episode with lots of weird headmovement and eyecontact with the camera.
