Babel (2006)
Slow......but Amazing!
Babel is one of those rare films that are so engaging that you forget that it's 2 hours and 22 minutes. Not only are the 4 story lines in this film incredible, but the visuals as well. Iñárritu is one of few directors who can keep an Anthology film so engaging.
The acting is top-shelf as well. Adriana Barraza gives an outstanding performance as Amelia, the caring Mexican nanny. As does Rinko Kikuchi as the deaf-mute Japanese student, Chieko. Even Brad Pitt brings us a moving performance. Especially in the scene near the end of the film when he talks to his son on the phone and cannot hold back the tears.
The film brings to us a subtle message that the viewers need to decipher for themselves. The message deals not with miscommunication, but with how people of the world are divided by our differences and how we look at others with differences, because maybe, we're not as different as we think. (Examples from the film: The way the Japanese kids treat Chieko because she cannot speak or hear. The fact that the American Government assumes that the shooting of the American Susan must be a terrorist attack when it was only 2 kids testing out their rifle. The way Santiago has no idea how to properly react to the Border Patrol's demands.)
In the end, I will say, this has got to be one of the best movies I've seen this year. I would recommend it to anyone, it will take your breath away.
Crash (2004)
A Stunning Film
This movie is a compelling work. It makes question your actions toward others of a different race. I remember one night I had watched the ending sequence and thought to myself, this is crap.
But a friend got me to watch it again, all the way through. This time I saw it from beginning to end...and I was blown away.
The cinematography was excellent, and the dialogue, especially between Ludicrous' character and Tate's character, was superb and realistic writing.
It really is a great film. I would recommend it to anybody, especially those who say "I'm not racist", which we all are...even if it is just little bit.
Collateral (2004)
One of the best
This movie is incredible. Even with Tom Cruise.
One of the coolest things about the film is the cinematography. Michael Mann's choice of camera use is one thing that stands out in the movie. The colors make the scenes nice to look at.
Another thing is Foxx's acting. He's really good at they way he keeps his character quiet and reserved, but during his meeting with Felix, he shows a different side of himself.
The first time I saw it, I honestly wasn't impressed. But the second time I watched it, months later, I payed more attention and realized that I was seeing something incredible.
I would recommend it to anybody.
Amores perros (2000)
An Amazing Film
At 2 hours and 33 minutes, you would think it would be hard to sit through the whole movie, but that's not the case with this film.
The first scene grabs a hold of you, and only barely loosens its grip during the movie. Each story is mesmerizing and you stay determined to see the outcome. The first story is one of the most stunning of the three. However no story is really over when the next begins. The three remain connected. The dog fights are a little uneasy to watch, but it isn't shown on the screen for more than 21 seconds.
I would recommend it to anybody, unless you can't stand to watch a dog getting shot.
Irréversible (2002)
A 97-minute Roller Coaster
You have trouble standing on your two legs after seeing this film. It's a little twisted but it's still incredible. The continuing shots that carry you backwards through the story of this couple keep your eyes fixed on the screen.
However there are those moments when you want to look away. Like the scene in the bar when Pierre bashes the wrong guy's face in and leaves a bloody stump. Or the infamous rape scene, in which you yourself want to take revenge for Alex. I think there are only a few people who can watch any of these scenes listed above.
Even the scene at the end of the movie, when Alex finds out she's pregnant is extremely difficult to watch.
But even with the gut-wrenching details, it's a film worth viewing. I'd recommend it, unless you're the faint of heart or you get dizzy easily. You won't be disappointed.
