Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966)
So very bad but in many was so very good
I found Manos at the bottom of the IMDb list and like most people reading this HAD to see it, so bought a copy on ebay and with the help of my friends, who I watch many bad movies with, we watched it.
The plot is simple, a family of three out driving get lost and need a place to stay. They come across a house tended to by Torgo and owned by a mysterious master.
To review it fairly is difficult it's not a horror. Not one moment of tension, shock or terror is generated in this entire movie. Confusion and amusement will be your most likely reactions and the bad dubbing could even annoy you. It is filled with pointless scenes, repeated scenes and long periods of the character Torgo going through what look like facial exercises in the attempt to convey well something.
But i am not really being fair to this movie, for one thing it is not is boring. We were hooked from the beginning as the movie lived up to every bad review being as shoddy as we had hoped with amusing lines, the make out couple continuously making out (will they never learn), the cops attempts at a search, the master's amazing robes and of course Torgo.
I rated this movie low because in fairness it is a bad movie, badly made yes but I cannot recommend it highly enough.
The Iron Giant (1999)
The metal man with heart
Having being a great fan of the Iron Man i was cynical about this movie i have to admit. It does make changes to the original story but this creates a separate tale which can stand on its own. Its very entertaining, with jokes for kids and adults. Featuring excellent voice acting, a strong plot with good pacing. The animation, using the more traditional approach, is impressive and most importantly adds to the story instead of becoming the story. The ending will make you get that tingly feeling that I believe tells you that the emotional story is effective. If you are a fan of the book you have nothing to lose, if you like the story, you win and if you don't well the book's still there. Oh and its Vin Diesel's best film to date.
The Crow Road (1996)
Something I will remember forever
I saw the crow road when it first aired and it was the first BBC drama that I never expected to like but really enjoyed, I could wait to see the next part. Years later when I went to Uni I became friends with a lad who reminded me so much of Prentice and fortunately UK gold began running the series and it has not lost any of the original spark. I would definitely encourage anyone to see the Crow Road, it is both funny and captivatingly mysterious, containing excellent performances from all the cast especially Prentice.
Screamers (1995)
Oh my god you are TERRIBLE
I word of advise NEVER LISTEN TO FRIENDS OPINIONS ABOUT MOVIES. My friend said "Screamers was a decent movie" he was wrong. I watched this movie with a few friends and have never lived it down since. The opening scenes are good then the long trek across the desert with THE most annoying character outside of Jar Jar Binks, with lines like "You were the ones who started throwing the bombs around" arghhh. They stumble across this bunker type installation and the "love" story begins with the main character (robocop guy) watching a woman they have discovered there and then just randomly saying "My god you are beautiful" ,classic. Anyway they travel on into an even bigger bunker which uses up an entire 1/3 of the movie and more than 9/10 of the budget and achieves, NOTHING. So anyway the rest of the movie they try to escape the planet and more killer robots are introduced but they all suck, one more awful twist then the movie ends THANK GOD.
Oh yeah DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE IT IS VERY BAD!!!!
