Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Can You Improve on Perfection? Yes
Now, I wouldn't call the first "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" perfect. But it was damn good. This one is better. I think the cast is the first plus: Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum, Veronica Cartwright, Leonard Nimoy, and a cameo by Kevin McCarthy. The next plus is the special effects. They are perfect for the movie, and specially good, considering this was in the 1970s. Third plus is the story. Of course, this just a very close remake of the original movie, but it sure is a lot of fun. If you only get to watch one version of this story, this is the one it should be.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
The Seed of a Great Franchise
This is the film that started a great franchise, the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." I like this film because its clever. The writing is good, and gives you just enough to know things are wrong. Kevin McCarthy does a great job, and it's nice to be able to learn what's going on at the same time he does. This is 1950s, so its black & white, and doesn't have a lot of gore. Still spooky, and pretty menacing. Recommend (though not as highly as the 1978 version.)
The Velvet Vampire (1971)
Not the Worst Vampire Movie I've Seen...
And not the best, by far. This film can be slow at times, with lots of dream sequences, and fuzzy, drawn out sex scenes. I was never fully pulled into the story. But saying that, the story and motivations were pretty solid. I believed the story, even if wasn't real interested sometimes. A few other shortcomings: the acting wasn't good (some of the worst screams I've heard in a long time), and some of the camera work wasn't great.
Vampitheatre (2009)
Bad Vampire Movie?... You Got It
I was on this kick for indie vampire films, and stumbled across this beauty... I mean baddy. It was really hard to get through this film. The acting was really not very good, and the writing didn't help. If this band travels around, and people die, or go missing, wouldn't someone notice after awhile. The music seemed to be original songs. But they were slow, and honestly, a little boring. There were a few attractive people, that helped, but not enough. Linnea Quigley was in it, and she should have been the bright spot. But she wasn't. Too bad.
Streetwalkin' (1985)
Streetwalkin, Maybe Walk on By
This film had 2 bright spots: Melissa Leo, and Julie Newmar. Melissa Leo did a great job. Her acting was good, even though the storyline was weak in parts. Julie Newmar was beautiful, but was almost wasted in this film. I wish her part was bigger, and I wished she said purrfect more often. Overall, this movie wasn't bad. But it just felt like it was missing something.
SexSquatch (2012)
Better Watch
Though that's not totally true. SexSquatch has its moments, and a little bit of charm, but it's pretty bad: bad writing, bad acting, bad film making. The whole premise, that a group of friends is trying to get their buddy laid, is ripe for this level of film making. One of the women is actually the guy's mom, and she wants him to get laid just as bad as the others. The SexSquatch costume is pretty freaking terrible, too. I think most everything bad with this film is deliberate, and I can appreciate that. If you don't like these cheesy kinda films, you might wanna skip this one.
Le frisson des vampires (1971)
Holy crap! Wher you been all my life?
I went into this movie expecting something like bad 1970s Italian zombie movies. But I was wrong. This was part vampire horror, part erotic drama, and part arthouse film. There was a lot of campy stuff in the storyline, and the acting, which was sometimes really exaggerated. The whole thing worked for me. But my 2 favorite things were the very red blood (seemed a lot like Hammer Dracula movies), and the music. The whole thing fit together like a well oiled machine.
Mamula (2014)
Killer Mermaid, Killer Movie
I loves this movie. From first to last, it was great. The story was engaging, and well written. The acting was very good, and the scary parts were pretty scary. Basically it was a variation on the slasher film, but had that supernatural thing going on. If I had any complaint, it was the one actress who was supposed to be American, but her acce wasnt very good. She was gorgeous, though. Will watch again.
Plank Face (2016)
Plank Face Is Plain Great
Plank Face was one of the best indie movie I've seen. From the beginning to the end it held my attention. The feel of the movie was great, and set up the tone for the rest of the movie. I loved the story, which was nicely developed. The acting was so good. Susan M. Martin was specially good. This movie is good, but some people might not be able to handle the gorey stuff, and some of the sex scenes. I thought they were a perfect fit for the story. Well done, Scott Schirmer, and all the folks who made this film.
Amazon Hot Box (2018)
Amazon Hot Box Is Hot
Right off the bat, I got to say Amazon Hot Box is hot. The location is hot, and made me believe they were really in South America. The actresses were hot, too. Ellie Church is awesome in just about everything she does. Real natural. Tristan Risk is also pretty amazing. She plays a good bad guy. There was some cheesy effects, specially the CGI stuff with the helocopter. But it just made the movie more fun. I think the zombie stuff was a little bit much, but it was a nice, like the old women in prison movies. I wish Pam Grier was in it. This was a real good indie movie, and I would recommend anybody watch it.
