Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
A few questionable choices but I had a great time anyway!
Visuals: 9/10 🔥
Fan Service: 9/10 😱
Acting : 7/10 🙂
Story : 6/10 👍
Horror : 3/10 😔
I have been eagerly waiting for this film for years, as an avid fan since 2014. And I got to say this film!... is around the exact level of quality I expected.
My main take away, this film definitely makes a few strange decisions that I really think hinder what is otherwise an excellent film. The cupcake, the taxi scene and the Vanessa plot twist to name a few.
However! As an audience I feel we have gotten too obsessed with bite sized moments and short scenes, acting as though a few inklings of cringe can ruin a two hour experience. 90% of this film is outstanding, visually beautiful and well directed, and I would happily watch it again.
Merlin: The Crystal Cave (2010)
Surprisingly Mature
I think we can be all be honest with ourselves and admit that Merlin... isn't always that great of a show, and when I saw the Next Time trailer for this episode I thought this episode was just going to be another "Merlin tries to stop Morgana from killing Uther in an anti-climactic way episode".
I was pleasantly surprised with this episode though! The show does an excellent job of subverting the audiences expectation by practically killing off the threat by the end of the first act and spends a VERY large portion of the episode showing Merlin battling with his guilt and inner conflict, as well as showing the grief of the other members of the cast in a slow paced and realistic manner, that is not normally shown in Merlin.
No, this episode isn't by any means a work of art, nor is it without it's flaws. But I thought it was worth noting that this episode was far better than I expected and looks to be building to very good finale.
Doctor Who: Extremis (2017)
Underrated Masterpiece
This episode is underrated AF, and i understand why. The Missy flashbacks are crammed in for very little pay off, and the two following episodes are average at best... but as a stand alone episode this story is incredible!
Seeing the show take a far slower, far darker tone than normal is ,in my opinion, where Doctor Who truly shines. The mass suicides, the mystery of the Veritas, the doctors continued blindness and the slow reveal that everything in the universe is all part of a simulation, are all handled surprisingly maturely for this show.
I would love to see more slow paced, conceptual episodes like this one in every season of Doctor Who!
Lucifer: Boo Normal (2018)
Why The Hell?
I honestly have no idea who decided this episode needed to be made.
Anywhere else in the show and this would have just been a below average episode, the story is stock standard and fits right alongside some of the most basic episodes of the show.
HOWEVER, placing this episode as a 'special' directly after the incredible finale of the shows longest season, and the most important ending of the entire show is confusing to say the least.
I'm not certain about where this episode is supposed to fit into the timeline... but the show does not establish that it is before the devil face reveal at the end of 'Devil of my Word', even though I assume that was the intention, I would honestly ignore this episode all together and skip straight to season 4.
Lucifer: Off the Record (2017)
My Favorite Episode!
This episode flips the normal show formula on it's head, showing the existential crisis and dread of a completely random side character who is shown the true reality of Lucifer's identity and is sent down a drastic downwards spiral as a result.
Seeing the show take the reveal that the devil walks among us seriously, filling someone with existential dread, is something the show needs to do more of, and it is handled so perfectly here.
