Action (1999)
One of the best shows ever on TV
That Action could not succeed on broadcast TV is sad. That it never got picked up or originally aired on cable is tragic. The 13 episodes that were shot are each far better than nearly anything that has ever been on TV. I rate Action in the top 5 of all time along with The Sopranos, Strangers With Candy, Arrested Development and Amos & Andy. Jay Mohr does what he does best; he plays an incredibly slimy, narcissistic, insensitive, driven operator (movie producer) who is like his character in Jerry Maguire on steroids. Illeana Douglas gives her best performance as a hooker who is smart, funny and surprisingly decent and warm. Aw heck, every performer on this series was just great. Each episode stands up to repeated viewing. The series is on DVD; get it.
The Way of the Gun (2000)
A movie that stands up to repeated viewing
Others have already laid out the story line. What defines this film for me is the the dialogue and the intensity of the characters.
These are highly unusual and very compelling characters that you become totally intrigued by from the first time you see them. You get absorbed by them, yet you never know them. This film couldn't have been any better if Christopher Walken and Samuel L. Jackson were in it. The dialogue takes the strange yet familiar twists and turns of Tarantino at his best. Consequently, you can watch this film over and over. The perfect double feature would be The Way of the Gun and Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead.
Hardware (1990)
On my top 10 list of Sci-Fi Films
Hardware may have been low budget and it may be derivative at times, but it combines its elements into a package that is far more exciting and entertaining than most high budget Sci-Fi/Action films. The hero "Mo", played by Dylan McDermott has the kind of charismatic coolness that we saw in Snake Pliskin or Mad Max. The heroine "Jill" played by Stacy Travis combines drop-dead gorgeous looks, steamy sexuality and the toughness of Sigourney Weaver's "Ripley", character from the Alien series. The tone of the film has all of the grimness of Soylent Green combined with the unrelenting action of The Terminator. The sound track rocks hard. The action is so intense that by the time the film has ended you will feel exhausted. This is one of my Top 10 Sci-Fi/Action films ever.
