Bloopers better than the show
22 June 2023
I never watched the show when it came out, but I came across the blooper reels on YT and thought they were hilarious. The show, however, turned out to be something else entirely. It should have been called the Ricky Maudlin Show. Watch as a sad chubby middle aged man wallows in self pity for 3 seasons while being as unpleasant as possible to everyone around him. That's about it. Five stars for the beautiful dog and for David Bradley who played Ricky's Altzheimers father. He was one of the few really interesting characters in the show, all the while being given almost no lines at all. Now if he had been healthy and living with Ricky then that really could have made a good show, with the interplay of sad sack son against no nonsense get on with it father. Best advice for Ricky's character? Take that laptop and recycle it. Be trapped in the past is sad and boring.

Victors Write The History
8 September 2022
In this case I guess it's once everyone who actually fought in a war is dead, then Hollywood can make up whatever nonsense they want. American self hatred is so evident in this movie that I don't know how anyone could miss it. Made during the Obama years which included his world apology tour, it makes American soldiers look like Mafia thugs. That is pretty ironic since part of Nazi propaganda was that, if fact, American soldiers really were Mafia thugs. I was rooting for the Germans.

The reality is that any tank crew that behaved like this would have been immediately removed from the unit and the tank commander would have been subject to a court martial. I have read dozens of memoirs written by WW2 tank crews, American, British, Canadian, Russian and German. None of them resemble anything like this. The truth is tank crews were less likely to be brutalized because they rarely even saw the enemy. Everything was distant and remote outside their steel shell. They probably never saw the round that killed them or where it came from. Infantry soldiers sometimes became like this and were removed from their units as soon as an officer became aware of it. They were bad for morale and dangerous to their comrades.

I know that people who don't pay much attention to history will buy into this dark fantasy. It makes me very sad and honestly it's an insult to the many veterans who fought in the war with honor and didn't lose their souls.

A Definite Fail
24 August 2022
A fantasy story does not have to follow real world logic in order to succeed, but it does need to have an internal logic that it follows faithfully. This show fails because it has no internal logic. Is the magic real or fake? We don't know because the show doesn't know. There are scenes where magic is clearly at work, then other scenes that completely contradict that. The real world scenes were generic Kdrama and completely predictable, so I ended up not caring about the characters except for the Macaw who was gorgeous and probably the best actor in the piece. I won't mention the songs because I'm trying to forget them.

I would have given it 1 star, but I gave 2 extra stars for the abandoned amusement park which was also used for Kpop girl group Dreamcatcher's MV for their song BEcause. It was fun to see it again and in more detail.

Really Wanted to Like This.
23 August 2022
I really wanted to like this drama because the cast contains some of my favorite Korean actors, but even they could not save the series from a bad script. One of the reasons I like Kdrama is because of the way they blend drama, comedy and romance together in a way that works. But in this drama the comedy is so overdone, often descending into slapstick, that I can't take the male lead seriously at all. The main characters are unlikable and annoying, and there is no chemistry between the two leads.

I'm used to the Seoul police being portrayed as incompetent, but in this show they're like the Keystone Cops or the Three Stooges. I no longer care 'who dun it', but I'm watching it to the end if for no other reason than to hear Dreamcatcher Kim Sua sing her first OST song. I just wish it had been in a better drama.

The Arrogance of Showrunners
31 January 2022
The Witcher is much better than the Wheel of Time, but it has the same flaw found in both adaptations. It's obvious that when media giants like Netflix and Amazon buy the TV rights to a major book series, all they are really interested in is the concept, the major characters, and the fictional world. Everything else they treat like a rough first draft of a script that can be changed, altered, or transformed into something that suits their purposes. The Wheel of Time was changed beyond all recognition while at least The Witcher retains much of the original story, but I will never forgive the showrunner for what she did to Eskil and the laying of the blame for that upon Ciri. Congratulations, you just infuriated the over 30 million people who bought the game containing Eskil and Ciri's story. It's understandable how the Tolkien Estate guards his legacy so fiercely from the attention of big media companies. I'm only continuing with this series because I like the lead characters so much.

To everyone who finds the story difficult to follow and the timeline all over the place, that's exactly how the books were written so at least they've retained that much from them.

Welcome to Wheel of Time Land
18 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Why do I feel like I'm visiting a theme park when watching this show? All the extras in freshly laundered costumes and everything so clean, but the world is so small. It feels like miniature golf compared to the real thing. So we're in Faldara Land (where do they get food in the middle of a huge wasteland) now after walking through the scary Tunnel of the Ways which seems to have shrunk from the dimensions of a freeway to a narrow path. So, just not big enough for the pack horses in the book. The Black Wind, who's touch is instant horrible death, just whispers in your ear like an internet troll. Mat did the smart thing and opted out of that journey. I don't blame him.

The Dark One could use this show as a recruiting film. The Dark One needs a few good men to rid the world of these whiny annoying vermin. Good pay, eternal life guaranteed. Sign me up!

Disclaimer: The Dark One in no way refers to his/her ethnicity or race. That goes for the Black Wind too. The Dark One is totally woke!

Truly Awful
4 August 2021
I really like Super Junior and I knew Siwon had done some acting, but I had no idea how bad it was. Maybe it's just the show which is pure American style sitcom farce. If you like shows like that then you may like it.

KDramas are often noted for their production values and that can save a weak show, but this show was shot just like any average American sitcom so nothing of interest there. Characters were cartoon cutouts and so utterly uninteresting. Even the real life references to the way workers are exploited and then cast aside in Korea couldn't make me care about them. Watch My Mister if you want to see that problem handled in a skillful way. So, not my cup of tea, but lots of people liked it so give it a try. You'll know if you like it before the first episode ends.

Glass Half Full
28 July 2021
I've watched 7 episodes of this so I don't think it's going to get any better. I really enjoyed the serious parts of the show, the tragic childhoods of the three main characters, the awkward attempts of two damaged people to start a romance and the ongoing murder mystery. I didn't like the comedic scenes because they were over the top to the point of farce and there were far too many of them. Kdrama is famous for mixing comedy and drama together, but it only works when done with a careful touch. The writing and directing fails to deliver that in this case. It gives the impression of a show that doesn't know what it wants to be. The acting is excellent and the leads are appealing and sympathetic. Worth watching, but a little disappointing.

Predictable writing saved by good cast
26 May 2020
If you like supernatural flavored Kdrama then you'll probably like this. Koreans are masters of creepiness. The writing has those 'I knew that was going to happen' moments, but the cast is good and work well together so that I didn't care. Sung-Jae Yook plays a similar character to the one he played in Guardian-The Great and Lonely God, basically a naive but well meaning idiot. The central conflict in the story is between him and Jeong-eum Hwang's character who reminds me IU's character in Hotel del Luna, a bitter hot tempered spirit forced to help people to atone for past misdeeds. Special effects are pretty good and so far the plot is moving along at a good pace. Too early to tell if that will continue.
