Miss Representation (2011)
Disappointing
My wife and I watched this documentary last evening. We were disappointed because the film seems extremely shallow and repetitious. It presents a single simple message over and over ad nauseam. Also, we would have liked to have seen some average young women being interviewed - perhaps, some even with conflicting views - rather than the litany of older celebrities who all appeared to being saying the same thing. Unfortunately too, the photos and videos used as examples of how women are depicted as sex objects in the media seem very dated - they looked like they were from the 1980's. This film was a huge disappointment mainly because we were anticipating an intelligent, in-depth treatment of the subject - something the subject deserves.
Her (2013)
A Disappointment
I rented "Her" on DVD with the expectation (from all I had read and seen) that it was going to be a movie worth seeing, but I was totally disappointed. Although the idea behind the story is intriguing - you might even say, ground breaking, my observation was the movie did not succeed in presenting the idea in a way that was at all believable. First, I thought the dialog was so juvenile and shallow that it mostly seemed corny and silly. Also, major questions about the OS arose but were never answered. For example, it was unclear why the OS's decided to go away and where they went. The movie attempted to show first that the OS's could be like humans with human emotions, but as the story developed, differences between the OS's and humans were mentioned but never adequately explained. The scene where the OS sent a surrogate lover to meet Theodore seemed completely out of place. Over all, as I watched the movie, I had the nagging feeling that something was missing. I believe what was missing was believability. The costumes did not help either; the men wore funky shoes, mandarin collar shirts, and pants that had a high waist line with no belt or belt loops. It just didn't seem to be the right style for a time period in the future. The story seemed at times to be without direction. Finally, the ending was a gigantic disappointment. The best way I can explain the ending is to say that this movie actually had no real ending; the story just stopped and the credits started to roll.
