I'll get to the point, I don't like Argentine movies at all. Between its low budget, terrible acting and very forced accent (in most cases), I think I couldn't feel more offended and would like to change my nationality immediately before seeing myself represented here. What about friends if we mix two of my worst hates, an Argentine film with a film based on a true story? As I have said a hundred times, the fact that it is based on a true story does not matter to me at all and it should remain a quality film on its own merits at all times. And surprisingly... he does it?
The Angel is a movie that I saw at the time for a school project and although I liked it at the time, let's be honest, there is nothing better than leaving school and watching a movie at the cinema with your friends. Which in retrospect I thought was going to be honestly terrible, but fortunately I was wrong.
Robledo Puch was a serial killer in real life, and in the film he is very well represented, not so much because he is close to the real person (which we will talk about later), but more because of the charm he has. Lorenzo Ferro as Robledo Puch is perhaps one of the most charming characters that I have seen in a film from my country, he simply has many moments in which he shines, and although he does not go beyond several stereotypes, I think I come to like him (as a character of course, not as a person, lol). I also loved the relationship between him and Ramon, and their contrast in various situations. This is honestly one of the best things the film has to offer, because the rest of the characters are... pretty much forgettable and wasted.
The film has two fatal flaws but before that i can say im not opposed to the creative liberties they took (which was for some a major complain here), especially with Robledo Puch representation. It was kind of interesting to see him being "gay", and not because im liberal or something like that (which would be weird to think that because im as opposed to politic as most of you), lol, but because i genuinely think it helps with Robledo Puch "chaotic" personality, plus considering the year the movie is based on, is interesting to see how this people were treated in the past, even though is... extremely underutilized in the film. Like i said before i dont ask for 100% precision to the actual events and creative liberties, especially for a true story that without them, it would be incredibly shallow and no different than a National Geographic documentary (looking exactly at you Mysteré), but i also want the new additions to not feel forced or underbaked.
Going straight to the flaws, damn, whats up with the rest of the cast? They dont do anything relevant for the plot. The girlfriends of Puch and Ramon are the best example, and what about Puch parents? It was a missed opportunity to make them feel real but the only thing they did was complaining about the things he had and hidding their money. Annoying characters to say the least.
And speaking of wasted things, Robledo Puch could had done more. Instead the movie cuts one of the most important parts of the true story... with a newspaper. Instead of telling it with the movie (as it should been), we missed how he was discovered by the police, and for a serial murder who killed 11 victims, is incredible how the streets are so empty, there is not even something on TV that reflects his actions, hell, the same jewelry is stolen twice! Like the police doesnt even care. Even the police in the Dahmer series were more useful. But speaking more about Puch personality, i know they made it on purpose to make it feel chaotic, but even in those limits i think there should be something that makes sense, because escaping from prison only to turn himself in to the police and dance at the end of the movie is a very bad taste joke. The film also has some moments were it clash with its fun moments, like the part were they shot the old man which he walks like it was nothing or how so many soldiers caught Puch at the end like if he was Rambo or something. The tone balance is just terrible.
Despite all of the negative stuff, im a little surprised. Because despite being probably extremely low budget, rushed and ridiculous, they tried its best, hell, if even Lorenzo was the same age as Robledo Puch when he made the movie (that attention to detail is literally insane from a movie of this caliber). At the very least a movie made in my beautiful poor country that i can of enjoy and imo the best of all what i seen, even if it would be far of the quality of even some low budget hollywood production.
Spoiler alert: No, I didn't change my nationality, just because I wanted to see how this country sink like the Titanic.
