Gojira -1.0 (2023)
WOW!!!!!!!!!!
As a lifelong fan of Kaiju movies I figured I would enjoy this film, but I didn't expect that it was going to be so AWESOME!!
Ok, some SPOILERS AHEAD:
Post war Japan was in a very low point but the people are resilient to regain their society and a sense of self as does the young soldier returning emotionally scarred from war and dealing with his trauma of guilt.
Many of our characters are severely touched by the effects of war. There are some rousing moments of National military pride but, like the original Gojira, I feel this is more an anti war film and about the human desire to live.
There is a deep and emotional human interest story here and I found it engaging and moving, in fact I had tears running down.
Of course there are some truly amazing vfx that support the story without taking away from what's really going on, but I felt the real strength was in the music and the performances.
There's a really good film here, definitely among the best of the year so far.
Star Trek: Picard: The Next Generation (2023)
THATS the idea!!!
Well I got to admit I've got some watery eyes - Star Trek is BACK! Again, I should say in Picard as I've liked all I have seen in this show. But for the Prime Universes - BRAVO!
SPOILERS AHEAD:
Now I will admit to not caring too much for stories relying too much on gun play, there was some straight out of the box, I hate American's overuse of firearms as motivation in sequences - but that's me. There's so many other ways of creating a moment without their use, but the show opens on such yet refrains from becoming an over the top shot-em-up for the episode. Hope to continue seeing that restraint - this isn't Star Wars.
The story is setting up now and as this episode unfolded, my exhilaration was palpable. I really felt the world and the people in it are as it should be. Can't wait to see what is coming next.
Music is awesome and well thought out. VFX, Design and Characters and their motivations, all seem consistent with good Trek.
This is the first episode and I am really looking forward to the rest. Bravo!
Andor: Announcement (2022)
Among my favorite Star Wars stories
I really have been enjoying this series!
I remember way back, way back, when George Lucas mentioned how the prequels might be more Machiavellian, political, and full of plotting and intrigue. What this series is delivering is just what I was hoping to see one day when I heard that. The music, the acting, the shot design, all of it just really works for me.
I feel if I were in Star Wars episode 4, on Tatooine, in the alleyways where Luke and Ben sold the speeder, if I just turned down a different alley, I'd see things happening the way they do in this show. Really looking forward to more. Bravo!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: A Quality of Mercy (2022)
Ten-plus
It's a Wonderful Trek.
When I saw the teaser last week I thought to myself, Hmmm, I've seen this before . . . And I was afraid that my first fears about this show would come true - that they would just casually change up everything so much that it couldn't be enjoyed by the "old School" crowd. But I have enjoyed the show so much, can't have it fail me now.
And it most certainly did not! Sometimes you got to wonder what might happen if you did something one way as opposed to another. I thoroughly enjoyed the episode, the problem that comes up is thoughtful and it allows us to see something in a new light without destroying it.
And that's the end of this season. I look forward to the next season big time.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: All Those Who Wander (2022)
This show just keeps on Rocking!! AGAIN!!!
SPOILERS!!!
First, I really liked the look of the planet - harkened back to the images of Talos 4 and how they evoked a sense of wonder to me back when I was 6 or 7. Whether the plan was to invoke that or not, it did. So right there that was enough for this 55+ yo Trekker to get hooked.
Then we go straight into horror motifs that are quite reminiscent of at two major sci-fi horror franchises. But even though they were quite blatant, still only hooked me further. And kept the quickly developing story going.
We are up against an old enemy, and we see it. It's truly scary. This sort of breaks canon, but then I think I can live with it. It was worth it.
But the real heart of the episode is what happens after the crisis is resolved and this had me quite literally bawling out loud. I'm not going to describe. But the adventure continues . . . Keep on Trekkin' !!!!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Elysian Kingdom (2022)
Touching episode - and amusing!
So far, every Star Trek Strange New Worlds story has touched me in some way, often quite personally, and so, this is quickly becoming one of my favorite programs.
This episode touched me as a parent and I would imagine any parent who wants the best for their child can't help but feel the emotion flowing through the conclusion, it will pull at your heartstrings.
As with the previous episodes, for me, this one also is a Ten!
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part VI (2022)
YEEEEEAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And there you have it!
What a fantastic wrap up! And yet the adventures are just beginning - I look forward to what they do next, and I hope there is something more. If there isn't, we have the perfect lead into A New Hope.
I will watch this again and again . . . . ! Well Done!!!!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Serene Squall (2022)
Thoroughly enjoyable!
This series just keeps on getting better and better. Being a TOS fan since the early 70's I didn't think I would like this new incarnation, but it's growing on me. This was a clever episode (SPOILER)
with a real twist at the end that brings in a controversial character we saw in one of the TOS films. It was a real surprise! Really looking forward to what they do next. And it looks like there is a new charismatic villain I hope we see again.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part V (2022)
YEAH!!!!!
Well ?? - What more need I say!
I found this episode to be thoroughly enjoyable! - No I am not going to talk about what happens. You can infer from the title of my review that you are likely to get what you were hoping for!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Ghosts of Illyria (2022)
WOW
Now for me THAT is just real good STAR TREK.
Like one of the many Star Trek Deep Space Nine episodes where the writers really got into a subject and brought out the emotions, the implications on people and the effects of issues we face as in society, and explore it.
If the shows keeps up this caliber, even though it has changed so much of the "Look" of the Trek world I grew up with, this might become my favorite of all the series.
Nah, I'm too old to change that, but this was excellent!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Old School Trekker
Not your dad's Star Trek in terms of vision and production budget, but the message is spot on.
While at first I was wondering why they had to change up m y childhood so much, I couldn't help but marvel at the new looks and technology at hand. The I realize the message is just exactly what it should be for the new kids of today. I hope this show has a Long and Prosperous life.
Keep on Trekkin'
Star Trek: Picard: Hide and Seek (2022)
Old School Trekker enjoying
Can't wait to see how it wraps up. I have a few minor quibbles but overall I really, finally, feel like I am seeing New, real Star Trek. We are seeing an exploration not so much of the universe "out there", but the universe within.
It's a bit different, for me in a good modern way, but not as different as the other new series in terms of the visual / technical continuity.
The younger kids can hopefully continue to enjoy the new series'. I'll watch the old Classic stuff again and again . . . Alongside Picard.
Star Trek: Picard: Monsters (2022)
Your Dad's Trek
Yes, I am of the generation that grew up on syndicated Original series Star Trek and I am thoroughly enjoying this show. I feel the story, so far, could have probably fit into fewer episodes more focused to the main problem, but I am along for the ride. Reading some of the other reviews here is causing me to laugh a bit though, rather than reconsider my joy at watching Trek. Not much of a fan of the other current incarnations, just too old now to have my childhood/teenaged views changed up so radically, but I am good with Picard and look forward to see where it goes.
