Kinds of Kindness (2024)
What a disgrace of a movie
Three hours of my life that seemed like torture.
Three completely absurd and grotesque stories with nothing that made sense. Classic Lanthimos, I cannot believe that scripts like that even make it to the Cannes Festival. Cant believe either how stars like Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone or Willem Dafoe agreed to play in this awful film. The latter two were a good duo in Poor Things, one of the few consistent films of Lanthimos.
If Lanthimos wants to make a statement in the film business he had better written more coherent stories to follow.
Or maybe something is going wrong in the film industry at large if it promotes such trash as art.
What a shame.
Alexander: The Making of a God (2024)
Time to really read history
Having seen Netflix 'Cleopatra' last year, I had believed Netflix would not make the same mistake again to produce another 'history documentary' without some serious money investment.
Being Greek myself, I was very curious to see 'Alexander'. It was astonishing to see that Netflix depicted the greatest military strategist in history as inaccurately as the third-class history professors it commissioned did.
Why, for example, did Alexander decide to launch a military campaign against Persia? How did he manage to create a pan-hellenic army? Was he really gay? Not even modern historians can agree to that, but Netflix propagates its own historical truth
I guess Netflix saved all its money for 'Crown' (its most expensive production to date) but decided to produce such mediocrity for some of the greatest people in world history. Such a shame.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Immerse yourself into Gilligan's World
Both of Gilligan's masterpieces 'Breaking Bad' and 'Better Call Saul' have raised TV standards to the highest levels of storytelling, character building and creativity at large. Walter White, like Saul Goodman, isn't just another criminal. He is THE character, the unaccomplished chemistry teacher turned by need into THE ruthless druglord. Likewise, Saul Goodman enters the world of crime by necessity at first and greed as time goes by.
Vince Gilligan has created amazing and unpredictable stories that keep you hooked for over 100 episodes. The casting, acting and directing is phenomenal, too, and as realistic as it can get. Who could tell Albuquerque would ever be the setting for such amazing stories.?!
Better Call Saul (2015)
An epic story of crime and punishment
Few tv shows have managed to create such unique and memorable characters like Saul Goodman. Within six seasons, we were immersed in the metamorphosis of Jimmy, the struggling wanna-be lawyer, into Saul the criminal. Jimmy's world was created impeccably, and full credits go to his co-stars Kim Wexler, Howard Hamlin and Chuck (his wife, professional enemy and brother respectfully). The world of law, including law firms and courts, is balanced against the world of crime and drug cartels (And here is the big link with the Breaking Bad characters). The storytelling itself, like life oftentimes, is tipping between the edges of a farce and tragedy. Beyond the originality of the story, one should applaud the acting and casting in this series, which is phenomenal.
An epic American story of crime and punishment.
Succession (2018)
A RARE gem
Succession is one of those rare gems you watch on TV once in a lifetime. Fantastic script, plot twists, amazing acting and casting, and a very very powerful and rich music score make it probably the best TV series I've ever seen in my life. A tour de force that stays with you, in all its tragedy.
At times, Succession feels so damn good, it goes down to your stomach, some magical moments turn it into a truly Shakespearean masterpiece.
Eternal themes like money and power, family bonds and media in relation to politics as well as corruption in corporate America, are all dealt with mastery. Brian Cox in particular is phenomenal, but so are the three children. Complex characters, victims of their father's success and wannabe successors. Jeremy Strong blew me away too. Logan Roy : Genius businessman but failed patriarch. One cannot blame either him or his children for their actions!
This is not yet another TV show, this is artistry at its very best. Bravo !
The Crown (2016)
A Masterpiece
Just finished watching Season 4. What a masterpiece.
The cast, the acting, the script, the costumes, the settings... all unbelievable.
It truly gives us an eye to what the royal family truly was.
I particularly loved Olivia Coleman and Emma Corin, 'the young Diana'.
It is shocking how realistic their acting is-
and sadly, how historically accurate. Esp. Diana's wedding to Prince Charles.
Well done Netflix, this will be a reference point for future generations to come..
Looking forward to Seasons 5 and 6!
