Eyeball Eddie (2001)
Martin Starr pins this film.
27 July 2001
I saw this film at the Stony Brook Film Festival. Martin Starr of Freaks and Geeks fame gives an incredible performance. He plays, Eddie Malick, a weak insecure high school wrestler with a prosthetic eye. However, when his eye accidentally pops out during a match, Eddie seizes the moment, pins his shocked opponent and suddenly realizes that the strategy for winning sits in his eye. I hope to see more of Martin Starr in the future. M. Emmet Walsh, who has been in many films through the years, gives a good performance as Eddie's coach. Mr. Walsh has played a coach in the past and I can see why director Elizabeth Allen wanted him in this role. Elizabeth Allen does a great job in directing her first film. Veteran director Cary Fleder must be proud of Ms. Allan's work since it appears he has been a mentor of hers. On a personal note, it is good to see another Ward Melville graduate doing so well, especially in the world of film.

Diamond Men (2000)
Delightfully clever.
25 July 2001
I recently saw this film at the Stony Brook Film Festival. This is a very clever film with very good acting and writing. Robert Forster's performance is key to the success of the film and he pulls it off wonderfully. Donnie Wahlberg, while not my favorite actor, provides capable support. Bess Armstrong looks great, she has been a favorite actress of mine for years. The rest of the cast does well in support, but ultimately it is Forster who carries the movie to its success. Dan Cohen has a hit on his hands, I hope to see more of his work in the future.

Beautiful and poetic film
24 July 2001
I recently saw this film at the Stony Brook Film Festival. It was a very beautiful and emotional film. Jena Malone's performance was incredible. I'm sure we are going to see a lot of her in the future. I was fortunate to speak with Jena at the reception before the screening and I was amazed by her intelligence and poise. I also spoke with the director, Michael Miner, known for writing the Robocop films. It was obvious that this was a labor of love for him and he did a wonderful job. Mary Stuart Masterson's performance is one of her best. Delroy Lindo also provides capable support and Karl Geary gives a great performance as a Hungarian soldier. His accent was amazing. He must of had a good dialect coach considering he is from Ireland.
