Barbie (I) (2023)
9/10
I hated Barbie. Now there is the film poster in my room.
21 July 2023
I have never been a fan of Barbie: I found her too pink, too clichéd - until I watched this film. As the trailer suggested, this movie is for people who hate the legendary doll, so I gave it a shot. It was worth it: I seldom had that much fun in cinema.

Barbie lives her happy life in Barbieland, but as she develops a human consciousness, she has to travel to the real world in order to restore normality.

This movie is so much more than just funny, as it is political and not predictable. It discusses the influence of the doll on young girls: It criticizes Barbie's stereotypical body while acknowledging her for revolutionizing the way girls saw themselves.

"Because Barbie can be anything, girls can be anything" is said throughout the film. As Barbie taught girls to be more than just mothers, this is true.

Margot Robbie has proved what a great actress she is. That makes her the perfect cast for Barbie, as you take her seriously and sympathize with her. Ryan Gosling as her counterpart is equally fitting. He provides the film with a great sense of humor that will leave you laughing out loud.

All in all, "Barbie" differs from the majority of movies that are produced in Hollywood right now, as it is refreshingly new, funny and surprising. Director and author Greta Gerwig has done a great job creating this hilarious summer movie.

She Said (2022)

Brave, true, confident - both the film and the women
9 December 2022
Harvey Weinstein is currently facing charges for his sexual harassments against women during his time as a powerful producer in Hollywood. After decades, the women now can finally get the justice they have been waiting for for so long.

But until The New York Times published their stories, what she said only became a rumour in the industry, a statement that could easily blown away by Weinstein.

The film "She Said" shows how hard it is to speak out against a man that famous, that powerful. It shows how much the journalists did and risked to do justice to the victims. It focuses on the females - the two journalists and the harassed women. She Said does not give Weinstein the room he used to get.

Instead, it enhances that even though it seemed impossible back then, victims do have the power to achieve change. The journalists of The New York Times had the women find their voice again.

Maria Schrader made a quiet but intense film that is absolutely worth your time.

Giving this series an 8/10 is not an issue for me
19 July 2022
Anna Delvey. Anna Sorokin. The young woman from Germany who fakes her name, her identity, her net worth. Who gets access to the high society of New York, including trips to Ibiza and Venice. Her accent is iconic. So are her glasses.

Julia Garner acts really good, she presents Anna as both a confident and manipulative woman. She even gets to look like the real Anna Sorokin.

Anna Chlumsky succeeds as well. Being the stressed but determined journalist Vivienne, she is the character that is a fine counterbalance for Anna.

All in all a great series. And don't be surprised that people try to enter the VIPs of society. VIP is always better.

Spectacular, Spectacular!
4 January 2022
To put it all in a nutshell: Brilliant visuals, awesome and surprising twists and a story that both considers the older spider-man movies as well as develops its own speed and tone even convinced me, who is not up to date when it comes to Marvel, to give this movie standing-ovations!

Time to watch this series again!
14 November 2021
One year after it´s release, this mini-series still isn´t forgotten, but even more intense and moving!

Based upon the novel by Walter Tevis, it tells us the story of chess player Beth Harmon, whose style of dressing and appearance everybody wanted to copy in 2020.

The cinematography is beautiful, the soundtrack is fitting and it is very well acted.

By making it a mini-series, Netflix assured us that it won´t destroy the story by endless sequels. That makes "Queen´s Gambit" a fabulous series to watch again and again.

Die Vorstadtkrokodile (1977 TV Movie)
10/10
If I was a director, I would quote this in every movie of mine!
5 November 2021
Die Vorstadtkrokodile is an older and unfortunately a pretty unknown movie, which is mostly because of the (bad) remakes.

It tells us the story of kids growing up in the "Ruhrgebiet", an industrial area in North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany.

Die Vorstadtkrokodile are a group of quick-witted teens, who first always meet in a tree house in a nearby forest, but soon move their den to the compound of an old brickwork.

To join their clique, you have to climb a roof. The movie starts with that dare, while the boy, who climbs, slips and barely can grab hold of the rain pipe that saves him from falling. Some neighborhood-kid witnesses the incident through his spyglass and calls the fire department: Kurt, who sits in a wheelchair and soon also wants to join Die Vorstadtkrokodile.

While the Krokodiler mostly disagree with that idea, burglars start breaking into shops and stealing electronic devices and bikes- actions, Kurt also witnesses.

An adventure begins; the Krokodiler intend to catch the burglars, while Kurt still fights for his place in the group.

The teenagers, that were cast for the clique, weren´t actors, but normal kids. This, however, makes the film really authentic. The lines are awesome and the movies does not have any lengths, it is very good edited. Besides that, the songs are very well chosen.

All in all, Die Vorstadtkrokodile is an awesome movie and the clique is just fabulous. It is realistic- West Germany really looked like this back then.

It is really sad that there was made a remake.

The original is brilliant.

Growing up is hard. And this series is honest about that.
4 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The End of the F***ing World is a story told by two outsiders, both stuck in a square town, both without friends: Alyssa and James, both 17.

After his mother killed herself in front of him when he was six, James, as he says, has stopped feeling anything. That is why he intends to murder someone to find out if he is able to have any feelings at all. When Alyssa crosses his path, he chooses her to be his victim.

Alyssa has (apparently) become unimportant in her parent´s life, since her father left and her mother remarried and got two children to live an easy suburban life.

Alyssa and James decide to leave and set out for a road trip through Britain, while they have to face engine issues and psychopaths as much as the police at some point.

The second season can hardly be retold without spoilering you, which is why I´ll leave it up to you to read the whole plot elsewhere.

The series is awesome, the two main characters are just humane: broken- each one in his own way-, angry but also sad and with each episode more and more lovable.

They are tough, not typical and all in all two against the rest of the world.

The series has a beautiful cinematography, great shots and an awesome soundtrack.

The End of the F***ing World is a story of a kind of friendship we all wish us sometimes and still with incidents none of us wants to experience.

Sometimes, we all just need an overview: "Sometimes everything is suddenly really simple, you step out and you see where you are really clearly. You see yourself, and you- decide to run away to "understand what people mean to each other."

Hats off, Netflix!
15 September 2021
9/11 now lays 20 years back and to this occasion, Netflix has released a short, five episodes long series about the attacks that shattered the world in it´s grounds.

But instead of ending the story after this day, the series reports about the events that followed and that still affect us today: mass surveillance, Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay. With never seen pictures and shocking facts, this series underlines the impact of the terrorist acts 20 years ago: There´s before 9/11 and there´s after 9/11, that´s all it is.

It provides us an insight into the world behind the curtain; political decisions we did not know about, connections we did not make.

Because there is so much information in it, you have to watch out that you do not miss anything! But with "Turning Point", Netflix again has proved that they not only can make fictive series and movies, but also the best documentaries.

Awesome!

Jungle Cruise (2021)
6/10
Indiana Jones meets Laura Croft in Jumanji
1 August 2021
Jungle Cruise is the new Disney-movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt as two adventurer in 1916, searching for "the tears of the moon" in the Amazon to break an old curse and to find a new medicine.

Emily Blunt is Lilly, an educated and determined woman, Dwayne Johnson appears as Frank, a skipper with some suspicious secrets.

Soon, they have to fight cursed explorers, that remind us of the ones in "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" and crazy Germans like in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

Riddles have to be solved, just like in other famous jungle-movies.

Lilly reminds us a little of Laura Croft (from "Tomb Raider", 2018), same confidence and determination; and also Frank is a character we already know.

The story isn´t new and the cinematography could be a lot better: Probably 90 percent of the movie is CG and one can clearly see that.

Computer Graphic should be used as an addition to the story, it should not replace it.

Disney made a film out of another famous ride from their theme parks, just like they did it with "Pirates of the Caribbean", but this time, it didn´t work so well.

"Jungle Cruise" has a few funny moments and is an entertaining movie, but it really could have been better.

Only the latest trailer to the film is surprising- watch it, you´ll like it.

The Movies That Made Us (2019–2021)
9/10
A must-see for every film-fan
29 July 2021
The medium film is a great invention and in the 1980s and 1990s, many classics revolutionized cinema.

This series is a homage to all the movies that left us breathless, that were the beginning of a new era and that are still quoted today.

The editing is great, the narrator funny, but never disrespectful. The series reveals fun facts and never seen photos and stories from behind the scenes.

Even though the episodes are pretty long for a documentary (approx. 45 min./episode), it never gets boring.

While watching, you ask yourself if there will ever be such breakthrough movies everyone wants to see again. Well, I hope so- and even if not, the classics shown in "The movies that made us" won´t be forgotten for a long time.

I hope, there will be a next season soon.

Brilliant, no Season 4, please!
29 July 2021
The german Netflix-Series "How to sell drugs online (fast)" is the most underrated show streaming right now.

It is funny, honest and fresh; a brilliant way of storytelling, mixed with perfect cuts and an unique narrative style. Every line fits, the characters are awesome and so convincing.

The third season is as good as the two others, the creators found a remarkable end.

I hope there won´t be another season- the story, as it is right now, is worth watching again and again.

If you haven´t watched it yet, start watching it right now! You won´t regret it.

Beautiful idea, confusing ending
26 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Nuovo Cinema Paradiso", better known as "Cinema Paradiso", is a homage to the medium film and the cinema itself.

Taking place in a small italian village during the 1950s- reminding you of the scenery of the sicilian village in "The Godfather Part 2" -, cinema is the (only) attraction and escape of daily life.

For Toto, a smart and cheeky little boy, it is a fascination.

Soon, he becomes friends with projectionist Alfredo, learns from him and saves his life during a fire.

While Toto grows up, he finds a girlfriend, Elena, but loses her because of her family´s move to a different town and also because her father always prohibited the relationship between them- that seems to be reason enough for the audience, that they never see each other again until the day grown-up Toto visits his hometown 30 years later.

During his visit, he meets Elena again and she tells him that Toto´s friend Alfredo was the one who prevented their relationship: Elena had intended to say Toto Goodbye before her family´s move, but had only met Alfredo and asked him to tell Toto she had been there.

Alfredo, however, never told Toto about that visit, so he would leave his hometown to become a famous movie director and wouldn´t have any reason to come back.

The intention behind that story is clear, director Giuseppe Tornatore wanted another explanation why Toto and Elena never saw each other again, but it is unnecessary- Elena´s father and their move seems to be reason enough for their separation, as said.

Through Elena´s story, good Alfredo suddenly becomes a cold man who destroys the relationship of a young couple.

That is wrong and leaves you a little puzzled.

It would have been much better if Toto and Elena had never met again, neither during his visit, and Toto would have only watched his old film of Elena instead, to show the audience that he still misses her.

Although the ending is weak, the movie all in all is good entertainment and has beautiful scenes and a great storyline.

Every lover of cinema should know "Cinema Paradiso".

Up in the Air (I) (2009)
8/10
Seeing them traveling makes me feel jealous in times of Covid-19!
10 April 2021
"Moving is living"- That is a quote and the slogan of "Up in the Air".

The movie already starts well: Shots, taken out of a plane, set the tone of the story and let you jump right into it.

Ryan Bingham is a loner, who isn´t much interested in other people. He likes so-called "Non-places" like terminals and hotels for business people. He travels 322 days a year; telling people that they lost their position is his job.

That´s why he, of course, doesn´t like confident Natalie Keener, who plans to change this lifestyle to reduce the costs of the company.

To get familiar with the business, she accompanies him in his work for a time.

Soon, both need to realize that the other is more different than they had been expected.

Jason Reitman´s movie is still good. It has a different kind of view for persons and stories.

I first watched the movie in times where traveling has become rare and it really makes you wish to travel around the world.

"Up in the air" is really good storytelling.

WandaVision (2021)
8/10
So you're saying the universe created a sitcom starring two Avengers?
9 March 2021
On friday, the last episode of "WandaVision" was released and it was amazing! The whole show is an adventure, an fascinating, thrilling story that achieves the same effect on people who have never seen Marvel before like on long-time fans. It is great that the show doesn´t clarify right away the mysterious things that are happening in Westview. That gives the viewer space to develop own theories, he muses about it more and looks forward to the next episode. "WandaVision" has set it´s own tone; the combination of sitcom and superheroes, old TV-shows and reality is new, funny, lively and exciting. Thanks for creating such a special story!

Moxie (I) (2021)
7/10
Teenagers that think and talk about real problems - finally!
5 March 2021
There are many current movies about highschool , but, to be honest, most of them don´t deal with big questions or serious problems. Quite contrary to "Moxie!". The movie addresses a problem that is very present, but still is underrated. Many people don´t take it serious. Young woman are often too shy or anxious to say anything against sexism. This is also shown in the movie: At the beginning, they don´t say anything against the sexism in front of the bullies- they first have to develop that self-confidence . And, of course, protests don´t convince everybody immediately. There are ups and downs, just like in real life. Though some events were predictable, "Moxie!" still shows another side of highschool, which is really refreshing.

I Care a Lot (2020)
1/10
Why does an unpleasant scammer suddenly turn into a hunted undercover agent?
2 March 2021
First it was funny. First it was exciting. Scammer meets old lady with mighty friends and forces her into a retirement home . "I'm the worst mistake you've ever made", the old lady says. Sounds auspicious. Then, however, the Mafia wants to kill the protagonist, but she survives so often, that it becomes very annoying and unrealistic. Suddenly, she is an undercover agent not willing to lose. Normally I never fast-forward a movie, but there was no other option in this case. "I care a lot" is a completly confusing and illogical movie.

Just as if the characters had jumped right out of the "Bande dessinée"!
26 February 2021
I am a fan of "The adventures of Tintin" since I was little; the comics are still great, funny and thrilling, even after all this time. Steven Spielberg is not the first person who makes a movie about Tintins stories, but he is the first person who lets the characters become so realistic. Especially the beginnig is so heartwarming and sets the tone perfectly. There is a little too much action in the end, but that is okay for an adventure film of the 2010ers. Laid out as a trilogy, it is pretty sad that there probably won´t be a sequel- to see Professor Cuthbert Calculus or Rastapopoulos on screen would be amazing! But, anyway, thanks to Mr Spielberg and Mr Jackson for creating this movie that is doing the comics and Hergé justice.
