Maharaj (2024)
Love the story! but overly dramatised
The depiction of 1800s India is fascinating, and the choice of subject is commendable. However, I found the story's quick establishment of a clear hero and villain disappointing. As a Netflix movie, I anticipated more nuanced portrayals of the main characters' ideologies. Maharaj is shown as entirely driven by lust, which might be accurate, but his religious philosophy is neglected. The film reduces the central themes of religious devotion and social reforms to a simplistic hero-villain narrative. This approach misses the opportunity to explore the complexity and depth that could have made the story far more compelling and thought-provoking.
Trance (2020)
I expected a mind bending thriller and I got one
The movie keeps you on your toes with the thrill element, keeps you tied up with the main character's changing moods that is central to the story and really makes you think and question our notion of belief. It's a genius work. Movie also touches on the dogmatic religious practice, power of corporate funded propaganda a presents deep social commentary on mental health issue.
