First Blood (1982)

Highly overrated
17 November 2023
Has there ever been a more overrated action movie from the eighties?

Stallone, who once again shows us he's unable to act, is completely unconvincing as a guy who goes crazy and starts killing everyone who gets in his way. When he jumps from a cliff whoever knows how many meters high and he just keeps on walking like he's always done, you know what you're dealing with here. A script full of stupidity that leaves the viewer unaltered.

The only positive element is Brian Dennehy, whose contribution always adds something extra to any movie he's in.

When you compare this movie to its sequels, it almost starts getting good, but please don't expect too much of it. Only suitable for nostalgic eighties fans (and if you don't have anything else to do).

Jason X (2001)
5/10
the surroundings may change, the killing stays the same
29 November 2001
It had been quiet for eight years, but James Isaacs decided to break the silence. The result: Jason X, Friday the 13th Part 10. Everyone expected something different of course, something spectacular. If not, it is very hard to wake up interest for a horror figure of the eighties. Everything around Jason X seems to live up to those expectations, but then after seeing the movie you realise nothing has changed. Jason is still Jason, a mass murderer with an Ice-Hockey Mask who doesn't say a word, just kills everyone he meets. In the first place it is not clear why Jason came back from the dead after the "final" chapter, Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday. Isaacs doesn't worry about explaining this. Besides the beginning goes very fast; we don't see anything of Camp Crystal Lake and Jason is send to space very quickly so you don't have time to analyse the details of his capture. Yes, Jason has been captured and now we find him in space. There the spectator knows it is going to be different, or at least that we be logical.

No way. Jason is the same cold killer as in the former movies, kills in the same way and doesn't give any surprises. And when you get finally used to that, he suddenly changes physically, at a moment the spectator already accepted Jason stayed the same, when he reminds the former parts from the 80's and enjoys those memories. So no one wants this Robocop version of Jason, except the real fans of course (beware of part XI!!). Jason X is a disappointment, in spite of the special effects and the presence of the very pretty Lexa Doig.
