Mad Max 2 (1981)
Conflicting?
Please. For the love of all that is holy. Please watch this movie and imagine that you're hearing Yakety Sax playing during some of these scenes. Imagine that and tell me that it isn't the funniest stuff you've ever seen.
But yeah this movie is surprisingly a downgrade from the first, I think it is a much worse movie. However, this one is a lot more funny. There is so much ridiculous stuff in this movie that just brings it to a new level of hilarious. Like the first one, there are some genuinely good aspects, but it has a lot more goofy things. Wasn't expecting the movie to go in this direction, it can be really terrible at times, but that's a big part of the fun.
Bishôjo senshi Sêrâ Mûn: Usagi ga oshiemasu! Surimu ni naruhô (1992)
Aged poorly, mixed feelings
Just to start off, if you're someone who struggles with body dysmorphia, eating disorder, or if you're sensitive on those subjects, just skip this episode. It handles its themes pretty poorly overall, and is not worth your time. I really enjoy this show, but this episode is not great.
As soon as I saw the title of this episode I was skeptical but went in with an open mind, hoping that the episode would offer some positive messages and hold up well. The episode kinda offered that, but mostly failed. It seems to not really know what it wants to get across. There are multiple characters who talk about how you don't need to be skinny to be beautiful and you should be careful trying to get skinny etc, but a lot of what was being talked about was really backwards. This episode doesn't have to be a perfect PSA on body positivity or hold up perfectly to todays standards, but it really fumbles the ball and is uncomfortable at times. And I'm someone who reads and watches plenty of stuff that has aged poorly, and a lot of the times it doesn't bother me much. This episode did, maybe it's because of a lot of my personal connection to the subject, but a lot of the episodes themes were handled poorly. At times it felt like it was intelligent commentary on how young people are obsessed with appearance and a certain standard of what their body should look like and how people influence that mindset and abuse those people using that. It was mainly the middle portion of the episode that felt that way, then towards the end it fumbled the ball. Usagi was very stupid in this episode, and never learned her lesson. All of the people who say good positive things get kinda overlooked and overshadowed by Usagi and Usagi's behavior. Mediocre episode that does not handle its serious subject matter well. Considering that the audience of this show is often comprised of young teenagers, I really don't like the mixed messages. Worth skipping.
The Last of Us (2023)
Disappointing
I feel like the only person who watched this show and thought that it butchered so much of what made the game great.
The show gives hints to multiple events that are coming up and it takes away a lot of the impact that the game had.
SPOILERS
When there was so much focus on David and focus on the food that you thought "huh this guy is evil and they're cannibals" unlike the game where when you first meet David, he seems almost trustworthy and he's built up to be a much more realistic character.
The episode focused on Bill and Frank had aspects I really liked and some I didn't. I felt it to be cliche with how bill and Frank died, and thought that a mix of how Frank dies in the game along with the romantic backstory of the show would've worked better.
The show is very slow and is missing 90% of the action present in the game. I didn't expect there to be as much action and zombies in the show as there was in the game but the lack of infected caused pacing and story problems. One of the weirder examples is in Sam and Henry's episode. Due to the lack of infected just wandering around in the series, the solution was to put them underground, and then they burst out of the ground and attack. That felt odd, and it was weird how the tunnels were totally fine but all of these other areas had zombies bursting through the ground (or about to burst through the ground in an earlier scene). And the lack of infected in the series gives us more time with the characters, yet they somehow managed to have way less development through the series as opposed to the game. I went in expecting the characters to not be as developed but they really fell flat for me in the show. All of the subtlety of the relationships and character development in the game was tossed out the window and it felt way less natural in the series. It's baffling to me how they took away so much action in the show to focus more on the characters but we got less on the main characters in the show than we did in the game.
The episode with David butchered many elements of that part of the game due to unnecessary foreshadowing and pointless additions that took away all of what made David's character great in the game.
Overall, I'm disappointed with the series. Not because it's awful, but because I heard so many great things about it and found it mediocre. It has good aspects such as the cinematography, editing, and acting (most of the time). But the changes in the show managed to take away a lot of the subtlety of the game and cause plot issues that weren't present before. It's more competent than many other game adaptations, however that doesn't make up for the issues it causes. The game is an easy 10/10, whereas the show is more of a 5 or 6/10.
West Side Story (1961)
The good barely outweighs the bad
This movie is FINE, acceptable, okay, decent. It has some really good attributes in terms of its cinematography, lighting, set design, elements of its story, and choreography. But what really brings the movie down for me is the main romance between Maria and Tony. It is genuinely one of the worst romances I have ever seen put to screen, and just all fiction in general. It is flat, lifeless, idiotic, and makes zero sense given that the movie takes place over the course of TWO DAYS. It is frustrating and ruins the experience for me. It could have been better with a single line of dialogue calling out the two characters behavior and idiocy out, but it never happens to the extent it should. Given that this is a musical with a big focus on romance, the fact that it has what is probably the worst written romance I've ever experienced, that really brings the film down for me. Just about everything outside of the romance is quite good and enjoyable, but that doesn't save the movie for me. It is a good film, with a giant problem.
Death Note: Desu nôto: Matsuda (2007)
Uh
Sooo... how did they get a camera in the Yotsuba building? I have watched this episode twice and there is NOTHING said or shown about getting the cameras in there. Not a single line of dialogue, nothing. It just doesn't make sense, and for the direction that the story goes, things would be super different if they didn't have the cameras in there. I've looked stuff up about it too, and I never see anyone say anything about the cameras. This show is far from perfect but overall, it's writing is pretty tight, so I'm just wondering how it slipped past! Maybe there's an explanation in the manga, but if so then why would it not be in the anime? I'm usually not bothered by plot holes a bunch, but this one is just ridiculous and brings the episode down a lot.
Dirtbag (2022)
Sweet short film.
This short film has some fun ideas. The concept alone is silly and has a nice allegory for the addictive nature of our own baggage.
The cinematography and lighting looks great throughout, especially in the nighttime shots.
The sense of humor is ridiculous and self aware, however, it feels a bit ~too~ self aware at times. There is some over-acting here that shoves the humor a bit too much in your face. Sometimes it managed to do some endearing awkward humor and other times it was forced.
Going back to the acting, it's a mixed bag in this one. Some of the cast really understand the tone that the film is going for, and others seem to not. I'm not sure who's at fault for that, be it the director Karsten Runquist, or the actors themselves, but the acting was a bit mediocre in some spots. But perhaps the style of acting is very much intended, and it's just not to my sense of humor.
Overall, this is a good short that shows promise for future work from Karsten and crew. It is lighthearted and has a unique concept. Some of the acting brought down the experience for me, but I could see this type of silly self aware humor really landing for certain people. This short film has a lot of charm, and was a pleasant experience despite its flaws. I look forward to future work from these filmmakers. 7/10, I recommend checking it out, it's short (obviously) so it won't waste your time.
The Midnight Gospel: Vulture With Honor (2020)
One of my favorites
It seems like this episode has a more lukewarm reception compared to other episodes in the show, which I very much disagree with. I thought this episode really stood out and got me more interested in the series. We got to see more of Clancy's personal life, and the episode addressed a lot of things previous ones have been building up to. I think this episode has some of the funniest, and most relatable moments in the series. Really love this one. It's quite different than the rest of the show, but that's part of why it works for me. It's a breath of fresh air in an already unique and interesting miniseries.
Yojôhan shinwa taikei: Film Circle "Misogi" (2010)
This show is starting to get spicier
Really cool stuff. Took the foundation that the first episode placed and ran with it. The episodic format is unique and interesting. We are becoming more familiar with the characters and the narrative in this one was gripping, funny, sad, and gross. This episode was thoroughly entertaining and makes me very excited for where this show will go from here.
Plus, the animation is gorgeous, just like in the last episode. And there wasn't quite as much speedrunning in the monologues in this episode compared to the first. It was still there but this episode was much easier to read along with compared to the opening episode.
Fruits Basket: That's a Secret (2019)
Best episode so far
Absolutely amazing. It was incredibly emotional and was very effective in its execution. It really pulled at the heartstrings.
We got a lot of background on the Sohma clan and how things work for people who are part of the Zodiac.
Momiji is one of my favorite characters so I loved that this one was focused on him, because it did some great things with his character, we learned a lot about him. People often have a lot more going on than meets the eye.
Fruits Basket: You Look Like You're Having Fun (2019)
I like the direction this show is going.
Very good episode. It expanded a lot on the background of the Sohma clan and how things work with them. Had some pretty strong emotional moments as well, especially with Yuki, can't wait to see how the show expands on what was brought up about his past.
I do wish Yuki and Kyo didn't bully Momiji as much as they did for his clothes, he's happy that way so I don't have a problem with it.
This episode had a different feel compared to the other episodes that mostly take place in school, it was much more serious.
One of the best episodes so far, I'm very intrigued as to where the series will go next.
