What If...? (2021)
It was the 'lots of unrealistic character motives' that hurt the show for me
The only reason I am not giving this a 1/10 is that there was a couple of scenarios of character motives that were realistic for a specific character so I thought I'd list them here before criticizing:
The whole Captain Carter story is the best example of realistic character motives I can think of in the series. I actually can see an alternate universe where Carter would take charge of being injected with the first serum.
The Dr. Strange scenario I can image is fine. I can see in an alternate universe where his ego gets in the way of his magic and he becomes the villain. After all, the ancient one did warn him of this.
I can see in an alternate universe where Oden never took Loki. However, I do not see the scenario where Thor almost collapsed the Earth because of a party. Just seems like lazy writing for me.
Ultron winning I can see happening. It's just lazy writing for the episode that does it for me
Now it's time for the loop hole section:
T'Challa becoming star lord is so unrealistic. The whole point of Yondu wanting to get Peter Quill in the first place was so save him from Ego. So, Yondu must have known where Peter Quill was, even in an alternative universe. He would have known right away if they did not get Peter and returned T'Challa immediately to get Peter. Yondu knew the dire situation of Ego wanting to kill Peter. He would not be ok with T'Challa just partying on board. Again, lazy writing.
The next is the zombie thing. I get it is supposed to tease the alternate zombie series that is supposed to come. But it is such a cash grabby series to begin with. All of it is a cash grab that is meant to bring a profit, not generate art. Thus, the episode once again comes off as lazy and makes me NOT want to see the zombie show.
What was going on with the whole Kilmoger episode? It was such a mess! With the season finale, it makes me even more confused on whether the alternate character is supposed to be good, bad, or an anti hero. So the whole point is he friends Tony to steal his tech. Why would Erik want to do this when Wakanda as better technology? They did not make this clear. A realistic motive would be Erik continues to focus his efforts on Wakanda since it is clear they have better tech than Tony.
And the most confusing part of it all, episode 9. What happened? Ok so the world collaps and the watcher makes his own Avengers because Ultron figures out how to jump between dimensions? Ok I'm not surprised but ok. It's just the people the watcher chose for the team that confuse me. Peggy makes sense, Natasha makes sense. Why is Erik there? The watcher said a team of hero's. Erik as shown in this universe that he is not a hero. He literally manipulated Tony Stark to get his tech (still confused me why he didn't manipulate Wakanda. A better plot for that episode would have been what if Erik killed T'Challa and became king of Wakanda but ok). Also why is Thor there? In this universe, Thor is not worthy. He is a frat boy basically. He never had that experience that made him want to fight for what is right. Based on the Loki show, Loki should have been there with Syvie. Also it just had to leave on a Clift hanger so people would be willing to watch season 2.
Anyways, this show is very disappointing and is filled with laziness all around from the team of writers. It sucks that a season 2 is being made. Hopefully the writers are not lazy with the writing and make it good with realistic character motives because it has the potential to be great.
Loki (2021)
Disney should have listened to Tom Hiddleston. Loki had so much unused potential!!!
I absolutely adore Loki as a character. Tom Hiddleston never disappoints when playing the character. His performance in the show was nothing but amazing throughout. However, my problems fall on the writing and direction the show took throughout the series. The first episode was amazing. I couldn't wait to see more from the characters. Owen Wilson as Mobius was a surprising good casting choice that I did not expect. I just knew Owen Wilson as the lightning McQueen KACHOW guy and could not imagine him playing a serious role in a PG-13 show. I was wrong. Great character and quickly became my second favorite character behind Loki.
I wanted to make a brief note about Miss Minuets before diving in to the problems I have with this show. People seem to not like her character for some reason. I completely disagree. I realize she doesn't have too much of a purpose but Tara Strong is such an amazing voice actor that doesn't get enough respect. Voice actors, in general, do not get enough respect as the industry is suffering as companies would rather see current celebrities voice act. I want to see unique voice actors like Tara instead of the same old celebrity over and over again.
My criticisms fall on the direction they took the show. So the whole point with Syvie is it is revealed that Loki is a gender fluid character. As someone in the LGBTQ+ community, I felt like they did a horrible representation at representing gender fluidity. Why? Mainly because Disney felt like they JUST HAD to give Loki a love interest (EVEN THOUGH FANS INCLUDING ME AGREE THAT LOKI SHOULD NOT HAVE A LOVE INTEREST IT MAKES THE PLOT BETTER AHHHH). Then what ticked me off the most is when I found out that Tom Hiddleston wanted to take the gender fluidity part of Loki in a different direction and was completely ignored. I guarantee that if his ideas were listened to, I would be giving this show a 10/10 right now. The show started out so promising and just had to make it a love plot. This is why I was so disappointed in the show and so disappointed about season 2 coming up. Season 2 I bet is just going to be Loki trying to find Syvie and I dislike this. It is weird to have Loki have a love interest in my opinion and hope they do not make season 2 like this and learn to listen to Tom Hiddleston. He played and researched the character, he knows what he is talking about. I wanted more of this time variant stuff, not a love plot between Loki and Syvie.
Black Widow (2021)
Great movie!
I am glad to hear that Scarlett Johansen won her lawsuit against Disney. She deserves to get paid for the views. With that being said, I loved this movie. Honestly though, Yelena was the best character. Though the end credit scene makes me laugh as a Midwestern, I disliked hearing how she is going to be an anti hero in the Hawkeye series. Yelena deserves better but I understand her character intentions, especially it is revealed that she is working with Val. I love how Val is played out and Val as a character would persuade Yelena that it was Clint that murdered Natasha even though she sacrificed herself in end game since Clint has a wife and kids (that scene was sad). Anyways, I honestly feel bad for Draco's daughter. She went through a lot but her character is played out well. Even Draco's because you get to see how messed up of a person he is. Would I like to have seen more character development from him? Yes. I wanted to see more of what makes Draco do the things he does. I wanted more motives. But, I guess that is ok nevertheless. It is still a great movie.
Diana (2021)
Not as bad as everyone has been saying.
I am a musical fanatic. I am a performer myself as I do musical theater as well as technical theater. I'm going to be honest, this musical is not as bad as everyone has been saying. My initial impressions were it was going to be as wack as everyone has been saying, but it actually is quite a normal musical. The orchestra scene (which went viral) was weird. The whole dance sequence in that song was a little questionable. Also, the Diana, Camilla confrontation in act 2 had horrible writing. Rhyming Camilla with Manila, really? That makes me think of Manila, Philippines. The writing in other parts was somewhat questionable but not horrible like in was in those two songs. To note, I did not find any noteable songs. The rest of the songs besides the two I have mentioned were ok, they weren't horrible, just ok. Despite that, the actor's performances in this were amazing. This is what actually makes the mediocre songs watchable in my opinion. Also, the set looked amazing as well as the costumes. I love how the set was able to utilize so many moving components and still make the set look like a grand castle. Also, the costumes are so beautiful (especially Diana's) I heard that Diana has over 100 costumes in this show and it is amazing to see how stunning they all look. Oooh and the quick changes, those were some of my favorite parts to watch. My favorite was in the act 1 finalle where she changes from the red sparkling dress to the white dress. Stunning and I cannot get enough of the costumes. Also, I love the significance in act 2 with Diana wearing a primo dress and the Queen wearing a toned down pink dress to symbolize that the Queen (as a character) views herself when she was young like Diana. It's the small connections and symbolisms that make it count. Overall, I feel like it would have been so much better to view the experience in person. I believe that would have made the effects look cooler in person. To add, if the writing was changed up a bit for better lyrics, this could have been an amazing show. It is just the poor writing at some parts that hinder the show. The actors did the best they could possibly do to still convey every point. Honestly, I just think people are over reacting a bit to how bad it is. Yes, it is no Hamilton, but it doesn't deserve this much hate. It's an ok musical and I am ok with admitting that.
