Entrevías (2021)
Unbelievably boring
4 episodes into S1 and the same thing has happened again and again and again. Grandad trusts Granddaughter, she does him wrong, rinse and repeat. The acting is poor, the cop, Ezequiel, is comically bad as is the local dealer who looks like something from GTA V - most of their dialogue is about their own balls so that tells you the level of scriptwriting we're dealing with here.
The younger cast are incredibly annoying, in particular Irene and Nelson and there's a really odd sex scene on top of a train thrown in for good measure.
Costal erosion moves faster than this. How this got a 2nd series is beyond me. Avoid.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Vengeance Factor (1989)
Riker being 100% Riker
So what we have here from the get-go is Will Riker going full Riker with the servant Yuta - the only surprising thing being the lack of chair mounting when he's sitting with her.
There's also a loud, mulleted, walking piece of chest hair who spends most of his time on Enterprise laughing at Wesley and grabbing drinks off unamed extras.
All in all it's not a bad episode - there's a plant, bad guys, and Picard doing diplomacy between the Sovereign and another mulleted chest hair loudmouth.
Meanwhile, Dr. Crusher is doing the dog work in the background and solving the mystery of the blood feuds without fuss.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Up the Long Ladder (1989)
Not offensive to this Irishman in the least
When I first watched this back in the early 90s as a 15 year old, I laughed like a drain at the chaotic Irish and their "Cure Hoor" leader Danilo Odell.
His daughter, who takes no nonsense in that hard nosed Irish mammy way, made me chuckle too, especially as the men were clearly terrified of her! It's not really surprising that Big Willy got stuck in as quick as he could.
It's a pity they didn't give Colm Meaney a bigger roll here and let his comedic skills loose on Cargo Bay 7.
There's worse Oirish episodes in the Star Trek universe - Voyager, I'm looking at you in particular.
If you're offended by this then I pity you.
Halo (2022)
It's alright
OK. Never played Halo, more of an Assassins head myself, so I'm not up on the storyline apart from the whole "Supersoldier vs Aliens" thing.
Couple of things:
1. It drags. Apart from Ep 1 there isn't much shoot 'em up action so far (I'm on Ep4) which is more than a bit disappointing.
2. Right-wing Halo guys are reeeeeally pi**ed off at this so for that, I like it!
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
A welcome change to the late 90s nonsense
It would appear to me that the majority of 1 and 2 Star reviews on IMDB are from middle aged white guys who like their Sevens and Troi as eye candy, their POC characters in the background for the most part, and their captains stoic and logical.
Discovery is exactly the opposite. We've got Queer, Non-Binary and Gay actors and characters and 2 leads who are Black.
It's now, by S2, set 1000-odd years in the future where the Producers assume that acceptance is the norm and anybody can be anything they want to be regardless of gender, skin colour etc.
It's called Discovery for a reason. Not only is it about the general Star Trek mantra of "exploring strange new worlds" but also about humanity exploring is own newfound levels of acceptance of everyone in a futuristic society that is even more all-encompassing than society in TNG, DS9 et al.
It's not "woke" - it's progressive and I love it for that.
Star Trek: Voyager: Fair Haven (2000)
Oh God.....
I'm currently rewatching Voyager and have arrived at this disaster of an episode.
What is it with the Trek production team that they consistently depict Ireland as a place of Whimsy, mysticism and Diddly-aye music?
Within 2 minutes we're introduced to a local who goes off on some Oirish tale complete with winks and begorrahs about being in trouble with the wife.
Later, Harry Kim is warned to "stay away from Maggie O'Halloran" as they head to the pub at 9am.
Turns out Janeway has needs, and a nebula or something is threatening the ship.
Please. Stop.
I mean, Voyager isn't great - probably the weakest of the 3 late 90s series - but this isn't just scraping the barrell, more punching a hole in the bottom and digging deeper.
