House of the Dragon: The Burning Mill (2024)
How can you find this boring?
If you watched all of season 1 and we're invested I don't see how you can find this boring. Game of thrones barely had any battles especially in the beginning. Every scene had my full attention and there were many exciting/tense scenes like the dragon chase.
I loved the opening scene with the Blackwoods and the Brackens and how that one event is very important for the rest of the episode. The music and writing is fantastic as always. Standouts for this one are Daemon, Aegon, and Rhaenyra.
One thing I noticed was a sort of theme set forth by Rhaenys. In the scene with her and Rhaenyra she has a line saying "Soon they will not remember what began the war in the first place." What I noticed was a similar line later about how nobody quite remembers why the Brackens and Blackwoods hate each other. Could be a coincidence but it's just something I noticed.
The Boys: Beware the Jabberwock, My Son (2024)
And we're back
To be honest, even though I did like the first three episodes of this season, they definitely weren't as good as what you would expect from this show. But these last two episodes have confirmed that this show has still got it.
All of the main plots and side plots are getting really interesting except maybe Frenchies. There are some returning characters from previous seasons in this one and it's glorious. The actors are also all doing pretty great.
There's some crazy action, good humor, and an intriguing sort of mystery here. Even though last weeks episode was a little better because of the Homelander stuff, this episode had me more invested in all of the plot lines. Standouts in this one are Butcher, Neuman, and a returning character who I wont spoil. I hope this season continues this quality to the end.
The Bear: Doors (2024)
What a season so far
This episode was a 30 minute long stressfest. Not a single second was wasted in this episode which is fitting. Acting is incredible as always, editing and direction is pretty phenomenal but the thing that surprised me about this one most was the music. The music choices were so inspired and fit so well and only increased the tension to new heights which is saying something with this show.
This is my favorite episode of the season so far and this is my favorite beginning of a season so far. Every episode has just hit more than the last. Every episode builds on the last in a way that almost makes you feel like it's one big movie. Anyways I'll be back in 30 minutes to review the next one.
The Bear: Next (2024)
Half hilarious half heartbreaking
I didn't expect an episode this good until later but honestly I'm pleasantly surprised. First off, this episode makes you see the previous one in a whole new light in many different ways. But other than that, the character work, dialogue, and acting is all too notch. The way the character interactions bounce off each other and come so naturally is kind of incredible. One thing that I've always noticed about this show is how the characters talk like people do in real life. This wouldn't work for all shows but it fits the characters and plot of this show so well it's pretty impressive. Also this episode is 30 minutes but feels like 10. Just another example of how good this show is.
The Bear: Tomorrow (2024)
Thoughtful, quiet, and somber premiere
I'll keep this as short as I can so I can watch the next episode sooner. A lot of people might find the montages in this episode boring but I didn't. I am not that good at finding meaning and symbolism in media unless it's somewhat obvious but I'm sure there was plenty of both in this episode. That being said I still was able to find meaning in a few things this episode but I won't spoil for those who haven't seen it yet. The montage was so well focused and interesting in the way that it delves int Carly's life and is able to express and explore how he feels through very little dialogue. Pretty cool way to start the new season and Im gonna go watch the next one now.
The Acolyte: Night (2024)
Why are we still here? Just to suffer?
No spoilers. The reveals in this episode were so predictable it's kind of insane. And I don't mean that because the show has gotten you to know the characters so well that you can guess what's gonna happen, but because they're so obvious with their foreshadowing and "hints" that it's almost impossible not to guess what the big reveal was. In terms of the fight, there was a lot of wacky choreography where characters just appear and disappear at random.
Another problem is that I have no reason to care about anything that's happening. At most the action is just somewhat decent visuals with hollow stakes and nonsensical circumstances. Again, no spoilers but part of the big reveal surrounding the villain completely destroys any sort of defense that people who like the show use. If you've been following the discussion online then you probably know what I'm talking about. Also I totally called it last week that this episode would be called "Night" since I thought it was weird that the last one was just called "Day."
The Boys: Department of Dirty Tricks (2024)
Like Caesar
No spoilers here. For a little bit of context, I love the first three seasons of the boys but thought the last episode of season 3 was pretty disappointing so I had expectations tempered for this but was still excited.
To get right into it though, I actually really liked this episode. The humor is great, the acting is really good as usual, and the story is pretty interesting right now. If I had to say a complaint it would be that some of the action scenes were a little messy but honestly nothing too bad.
To compare to the other season premieres, I like it more than season 2 but not as much as season 2. Pretty much exactly on par with the opening of season 3 for me.
(Also minor spoilers I guess but seeing Homelander not in costume was kinda surreal)
The Acolyte: Destiny (2024)
Did they really think people would like this?
No spoilers. This show keeps getting worse. I know they're kids but the acting was really really bad. The only people I liked in this episode were squid game guy, trinity, and tommen from game of thrones. To be fair I only like them cause of the actors playing them and not because they're actually compelling or interesting characters in any way. Oh and i liked the wookiee as well but probably just cause he doesn't speak so they can't write him to say bad dialogue.
The costumes and effects are fine I guess. I don't really have anything to say about them honestly. The directing in this episode wasn't good either. They cut to slightly different versions of the same establishing shot like 10 times this episode and I don't think that's an exaggeration. Lots of cringe dialogue and singing for some reason also. My hope that this show will get even slightly better has gone from 5% last week to 0% now. I'll keep watching just to keep up with new star wars stuff but I really couldn't care less to be honest.
The Acolyte: Lost/Found (2024)
I miss Andor
Wont go into spoilers. I'll get straight into this by saying that the writing and dialogue is so flat and at times really really bad here. There's so much clunky exposition to get the audience caught up and there's lots of failed attempts at humor. The acting is fine. The only ones who were somewhat good were the girl from Logan and the guy from Squid Game (Sorry, I don't know their names.) The cgi and sets range from not very good to pretty good. It looks better than kenobi and boba fett but nowhere near Andor and some of mando.
The characters are completely hollow so far, and honestly so is the plot. There's just nothing keeping me interested in watching this show. At least we still have Andor season 2 to look forward to.
Andor: Nobody's Listening! (2022)
I feel like I could run through a brick wall rn
It's so sick how good this show is. I keep saying it but this is my new favorite episode outside of episode 6. There's super interesting new developments on the ISB side of things and on the Mon Mothma side. But of course the main thing is the cassian/prison plot. I'm so glad Andy Serkis gets a chance to redeem himself after Snoke it's just great to see. He's so good here it's kinda insane. The whole prison stuff this episode was unsettling in the best way possible, and that ending was so good. One of the best parts of the show so far The ending got me so hyped I feel like I could run through a brick wall rn.
Andor: Narkina 5 (2022)
Star Wars' Game of Thrones
This show is sort of like Game of Thrones with its huge scope and variety in characters/plot lines as well as being quality tv (minus the ending of Game of Thrones.) Onto the actual episode, this one was like the last episode with how it perfectly balanced all of it plot lines and characters. Cassians was the most interesting for me this time. Seeing the ideas they came up with for the prison is awesome. How do you even come up with this stuff? Luthen has some great scenes too with a character who I wont spoil. Other plotlines converge in this episode which was super interesting to see like with Syril and the ISB.
Andor: Announcement (2022)
Emotionally Heavy and Tense Episode
This is my favorite episode of this show so far other than episodes 3 and 6. As i hoped, the events of the episode before have a major impact in driving the story forward which I'm very happy about. Every plot line is at its best in this one especially Mon Mothma and the ISB. By now, all of Mon Mothmas best scenes in Star Wars come from this show. No spoilers but the dinner with her and her friend was so tense.
Cassians plot was more emotional this time, with one of my favorite dialogue scenes in the show so far. The dialogue in general is just so crisp and puts every other disney star wars product to shame. This isn't just great Star Wars, this is just great television.
Andor: The Eye (2022)
Holy
This is definitely my favorite episode so far. The visuals were the best looking in all of star wars and the action was really good and made even better by the build up and character work from previous episodes. The plot is heating up even more now and I can't wait to see what happens next.
One thing I wanted to mention tho was certain messages this episode had, specifically a scene towards the end of the episode. It's the part where the imperials and the aldhani native people are all watching the eye together and admiring it showing that when you strip all the titles like "Empire" or "Native" away, we're all just humans at the end of the day. That's what I got out of the scene at least. This was easily my favorite star wars thing for a long time, definitely since before disney. It was glorious.
Andor: The Axe Forgets (2022)
Great Character Dynamics and Tension Building
The most interesting part of this episode for me was Cassians interactions with the rebels especially Skeen. The distrust from certain members and immediate trust from others characterized the new characters immediately.
I don't think I've mentioned it yet, but this shows is easily the best looking of all the shows. Mandalorian looked good at times but sometimes looked really fake same with Boba Fett and Obi Wan, but this show feels more real probably because of shooting on location and not in the Volume. Aldhani specifically I thought was really good looking. Again, really liked how they made the empire scary and competent here.
Andor: Aldhani (2022)
Expanding the Scope
Wow this episode was way better than I thought. There was so many interesting developments and introductions on both the characters and plot front. Lots of plot lines were introduced like the ones on Coruscant with Mon Mothma and the ISB. It's great to finally see a competent empire. It's super interesting to see how the oppressive nature of the empire comes from people just trying to maintain order instead of people who are just comically evil.
On Cassians side of things, lots of new characters are introduced and he's thrown into a large mission that I hope will have big consequences for the empire and for the rebels. Also excited to see the character dynamics between Cassian and the rebels on Aldhani.
Andor: Reckoning (2022)
Wow. Great Conclusion of First Three Episodes
Definetly my favorite episode so far. Not only was the action really well done and filled with tension but the characters and plot are evolving in a way that is very exciting. Back to talking about the action tho, I thought this was already better than the other disney plus shows action sequences because here you actually care about the characters and what happens to them so there is actual tension instead of mindless stormtroopers just lining themselves up to get shot. Also whoever directed this episode needs a raise because that ending sequence was beautiful and definitely my favorite part of the shows so far.
Andor: That Would Be Me (2022)
More Interesting Setups and Developments
This one was a little slower than the first but was still interesting. Some new characters were introduced who seem really interesting and Im excited to see what they do. Im especially interested in Stellan Skarsgards character who seems shrouded in mystery and has a lot of potential as a character.
The plot is heating up and is setting up lots for the next episode which I guess will be the release of tension building from the first two episodes. It's very interesting to see Cassian as a character here since he's so different from how he is in Rogue One but I guess that's what this shows all about. I'd probably give this episode an 8/10 but i'll rate it a 10 cause the rating is too low.
Andor: Kassa (2022)
Mature and Competently Written Start
I was surprised by how well written this was especially after the other disney plus shows that have come out. The characters feel like real people with fleshed out traits and motives that help either relate or sympathize with them.
It's a little slow paced which might turn some people off I guess but it doesn't bother me here since the characters are interesting and competent enough to keep me interested. Also it's not like nothing is happening, the plot is moving forward it's just not as bombastic or exciting as some of the movies. It's telling more a grounded/ realistic story with regular people which at this point is way more interesting than the jedi with how disney has tainted them. Really good premiere and i'm excited to see where it goes next.
