Elf (2003)
Seasonal favourite
I watch Elf with my family along with other christmas classics every year and this one has it all- quotable lines, likeable characters and motives, and especially with Will Ferrell, eccentric but wholesome humor. I also love these kind of movies where the protagonist goes on some adventure to achieve their goals and we get to see all the people and places they interact with. This one in particular encapsulates the culture and atmosphere of early 90s to 00s New York, much like Home Alone 2 and Coming To America.
No matter how many times I've seen this it always feels like a journey to see all of the people around Buddy change.
Nacho Libre (2006)
One of my personal favorite comedies.
Jack Black is probably my favorite comedian ever, because he has such a unique and characteristic way of integrating his humor into every movie. And I believe he shines very well, if not his strongest in this film.
One of the reasons I love this movie is that the connections between every character are strong. It's not just Jack pulling out funny one liners and making faces, but there are meaningful connections with every main pro/antagonist, which all have different stories and unique comedic moments.
The story arc is generic, but this is a dumb, fun movie. There are a lot of quotable lines that me and my family exchange at almost every family gathering, and I've watched this with many different people at different times in my life and it is always just as funny as the last.
10/10, gut bustin' laughs, great soundtrack, many fun.
UHF (1989)
Classic comedy!
This is almost as good as cult movies get. I remember being introduced to this movie by my older youth leader about seven or so years ago, and we have watched it together many times since then!
I've been a fan of Weird Al since I discovered his song parodies on YouTube and I was thrilled to hear that he had his own movie. I don't know what I was expecting but what I got was a core memory of pure laughing to tears and excitedly anticipating what the next gag would look like.
The story is very cookie cutter and the drama is predicable, but its how every character reacts to every situation that makes it a hilarious journey, not to mention the fun visual jokes, pop culture references and light stereotypes that flavor this beautiful comedy dish.
Overall this film will never leave my consciousness and I hope it will live to see future generations.
The Descent (2005)
A horror film I can get a kick out of
I've seen this movie twice now with different friends, plus a lot of theory and fan videos as well, and I have to say, this movie makes me feel something as a gore addict like myself. Seeing the way the characters, settings and different threats introduced is just something I haven't seen done as well as it is here. I always look for innovative cinematography and there is plenty of creative shots here.
I especially love the gritty bloodshot look of the cave scenes, and how there is little detail to make out the immediate surroundings in the quieter darker shots of the movie, but just enough that the foreground looks so much more menacing.
I love the amateur feel of this film and it is definitely one I'm glad I didn't sleep on. As a gore and horror fiend like myself, I could watch this annually on Halloween and have just as much fun as the first time, every time.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Timeless piece of art.
I remember when I watched the infamous opening scene of the Omaha beach invasion in my Grade 10 civics class in the spring of 2019, and seeing and hearing the reactions of classmates around me. It's a moment I'll never forget, as much as I have finally seen the movie in it's entirety recently. Seeing such a beautifully grim but brutally realistic action sequence put to film awestruck me, and I always had a burning desire to see this movie.
Well after playing a few classic Call of Duty campaigns and ultimately gathering more knowledge (and humbling myself) about WWII, I can say this was a tremendous experience. Yes this film has some inaccuracies, but the pure heart, passion and history radiating from this production turned me into a huge fan of war movies, and being keen about learning of war and the sacrifices of our soldiers more than before.
I always stood with everybody in the Remembrance Day assemblies in school and I knew of the sacrifices of my fellow citizens in participating in the wars of my country's past, however it wasn't until my latest binge of WWII related medias which truly exposed my eager mind to the terrors of combat, and the ultimate price our world had to pay for our human conflicts. And this amazing film is one of the things that has helped me formulate my utter respect and gratefulness for every man or woman that sacrifices their humanity and potentially their life to fight for victory.
