The Boys (2019– )

Different take on so called super heroes
6 November 2022
I was a bit shocked when I watched this. I wasn't expecting this series to make the supes violent and careless and that's what made this experience different. It takes a more dark turn on what heroes can be. They can be dumb, narcissistic, angry, desperate, make stupid choices without thinking and are still human. They are just an extremely enhanced version of everyone else.

I was stunned by the visual effects and detail the animators went through to design even the most private areas of the body and the guts. There are so many guts. If you decide to watch this with your kids I feel sorry for them and you because very episode contains substance abuse, sex, gore and guts. This is definitely made for adults. Don't watch this if you don't want to see the guts and head popping.

The Bad Guys (2022)

This movie should have been a short
1 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As soon as Marmalade decides he wants to train the Bad Guys, it becomes clear he is a villain. They put way too much attention on him. Somehow they all become reformed after only Wolf makes progress in only 24 hours. How the plot plays out is not what i was expecting. There was to much hype around the trailers. I wish movies today were a little less predictable. The story should distract the audience from thinking about what might happen next.

I will give the movie credit for the animation and voice acting.

Also, I couldn't help, but be distracted by the fact that Wolf's tail kept disappearing.

Lou (I) (2022)

Bonnie, I mean Lou
25 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After watching the series Mom I couldn't help but notice the similarities. Lou collects rent, abandons her child, and even had a limp. Oh and there's a dog! This felt like Bonnie taking on a hard-core role, but after she sobered up and missed a couple of meetings.

I can't for the life of me understand why Lou and Hannah decide to hide the fact that Philip is a dangerous man. Hannah puts her daughter's life and a potential love interest in danger by lying about his whereabouts. In turn Lou risks the life of her granddaughter and Hannah by not revealing the truth. This family doesn't seem to care about each other or anyone else. Even Philip uses Vee as a pawn.

The ending seemed very lazily written. You can tell what's going to happen after you notice Lou with a bulletproof vest.

**This series does not represent the experiences of all black women**
25 October 2022
The Hair Tales tells a story from the side of celebrities who only touch the surface of what hair means to them, their hair journey. They speak of hair as if it were a person or personality. Its an overall dry experience compared to if this were told by someone with a background in history like Dr. Tiffany Gill. If this series is supposed to empower black women and their hair it falls flat. It doesn't have a personal feel and seems scripted. The pauses for dramatic effect are a bit over the top.

It would help others who are not familiar with black hair and be more relatable to those with it if random black women from different backgrounds were able to share their experiences with a bit more history added.

Drifting Home (2022)

Predictable
23 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Became predictable after seeing Noppo and his injured foot. You know he's got to do with something when he comes out of nowhere. Some scenes could have been left to the imagination or revealed at the very end because they ruin the plot. I lost interest soo fast I had to fast forward because it started to drag on.

As usual we have to have a characters who bring nothing to the story like Reina Haba and her interest in Kosuke. The story could have gotten along with just Kosuke, Natsume and Noppo. Overall this anime felt like something out of MacGyver (1985) with the gadgets and survival skills. These kids should not have been able to survive on what they had given how all of them would most likely not have cooperated with rationing.

At the end of all this it leads you to question, How many lives where lost when these buildings drifted? What of the animals who may be hiding in them? When the kids experience near death would they really die? If so, how do you explain that to their parents without sounding crazy?

Uncle from Another World (2022–2023)
7/10
Typical anime shenanigans
23 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Good anime that would be great if it weren't for the sexually suggestive situations that are typical of anime and the genre. I forced myself to continue watching this because I only like the uncle. Unfortunately I won't finish the Netflix series beyond episode seven.

For me this is the uncle people wish they had. He confides in his nephew, Takafumi, who takes an interest in his stories. He doesn't cower away from adjusting to being back in his own world after a 17 year coma. Things have drastically changed for him and he still smiles. Ojisan is adaptable and doesn't dismiss things because they are new or seem difficult. He doesn't treat people like garbage because they are different even though he wasn't treated kindly. I like that uncle is himself all the time.
