The Walking Dead: Dead City: People Are a Resource (2023)
This show keeps on giving!!
Honestly, I'm very impressed with this new episode. Everything once again has been top notch.
What I love about these episodes is that the pacing is just right. Not too fast, not too slow. The show takes its time to develop the characters, but at the same time progress the plot significantly. That's an aspect that is really tough to pull off, but the showrunner has done a perfect job so far. Really hope this show keeps giving this level of quality until the very end.
The acting is great as always. I absolutely loved the little heart to heart conversation between Maggie and Negan. It was a nice, quiet moment without any action where both characters put their differences aside for a few moments of raw emotion. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan did not disappoint at all. They portray different emotions amazingly.
The only thing I required in this episode is to see much more of the Croat and they did exactly what I hoped for. I loved his backstory and the way his new "Sanctuary" works with the fuel. I literally asked myself where do they still find fuel for the cars after all these years and I got my answer a few minutes later. It's also cool how they hint a possible union between the Marshal and the Croat even though I think the Marshal is a good enough dude to turn against the Croat at some point.
I am from Croatia and I loved the little references they made about our culture. He played another song from a Croatian singer Miso Kovac on the record player called "Proplakat ce zora" and offered the Marshal a meal we in Croatia call Pasticada. His group is also called "Burazi" which literally means "Bro's" and I find that really funny. Also, the very obvious random Croatian dialog like the chant "Doma smo" meaning "we are home" in this episode is also a nice touch.
Everything else, especially the cinematography was just phenomenal. I really enjoyed this episode and it might be my favorite so far, but we'll see what else this show is bringing to the table.
The Walking Dead: Dead City: Who's There? (2023)
Great follow up
So far, this show deserves all the flowers. This is yet another great episode from this spin off and it was even more action packed.
First of all, I'd like to shout out JDM for such an amazing performance yet again as Negan with some Season 7 and 8 vibes while he was brutally murdering that guy and doing the knock knock joke. Knocked it out of the park with that one and it made me so excited about what was gonna happen next between him and Maggie.
Everyone did a great job acting their roles, even the backup character we were introduced to this episode. We get another small scene from the Croat being menacing as always and more Pearlie Armstrong scenes. The show did a great job with casting the right actors.
Loved the cinematography yet again. Absolutely loved the shot of the whole city, this time during the day. None of it feels like choppy editing and it's just a gorgeous filter to look at. Very excited for the future of this show because it's still going VERY strong. It might even be better than the first episode.
The Walking Dead: Dead City: Old Acquaintances (2023)
Fantastic intro!!
WOOW that was just amazing. Maggie and Negan's back and forth is SO well written that I actually cared to observe every single line they said to each other. I'm very glad that this won't turn into a slow building romance story though. I mean we're talking about a man who bashed in Glenn's skull and you're expecting to see a love story? Lol.
Lauren Cohen and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are as good as always. They work so well together. I found their dynamic to be my favorite aspect in Season 11 of TWD.
The villains are really interesting as well. There are two quite dangerous threats coming from both sides including Pearlie Armstrong, a man who is a part of this New Babylon society (I guess it's a small town or whatever), who's also a marshal on a hunt for Negan who did something bad or "illegal" according to their "laws". Still, the dude is just doing his job taking care of his family, so he might be an anti-hero. There's also the Croat who is actually a FORMER SAVIOR that Negan knew back in the Sanctuary and he kidnapped HERSHEL, Maggie's son. Maggie really just can't catch a break with the Saviors torturing her family, huh? I find these villains very interesting and intimidating.
The cinematography... top notch. Ever since they switched to digital cameras and lost that classic TWD film grain something was a little off. The filters were very depressing and boring, but the filter they're using for this show is sooo beautiful. It's eye candy, really!
Overall, I'm very satisfied with the introduction to Dead City. It gives me old TWD vibes, but it's also something new and original. Something we haven't seen in a while. I'll give the episode a 9.5/10 rounding it up to a 10. Bravo.
Fear the Walking Dead: All I See Is Red (2023)
Possible Rick Grimes and Morgan reunion
The sheer mention of Rick Grimes always gives me goosebumps. The fact that Morgan is out now looking for him raises expectations for the second half of this season. Andrew Lincoln got casted for one scene in S4 of FTWD, so why not make a bit of a return now? Besides that, I'm glad they concluded the PADRE storyline because it was really weak and messy.
The acting seemed a lot better. Maybe it's because the writing improved a little bit. The villains Shrike and whatever her brother's name is are very uninteresting and unoriginal. They weren't terrifying at all, nor did I care about their backstory. A lot of inconsistencies happened throughout the season with occasional good moments and thankfully this episode is full of those good moments.
Also, I literally disagree with Dwight and Sherry about their breakup. The reasoning being that they're causing each other pain is simply BS. Dwight saying "maybe it's not Negan's or Shrike's fault" made me laugh out loud in disbelief. I feel like if you went through so much pain caused by bad guys in an apocalypse for 12 years then you should do the opposite and stay together and support each other coming back from this and finding peace. Like, it's the perfect opportunity now. I guess it was still a well acted and emotional scene, but that really left me wondering.
Lastly, the final scene is quite interesting as well. I think that was Alicia's hand, but I kinda don't believe it's her. Didn't the actress state that she's done with the show? Why would she even state that if she comes back literally next season?? I guess we'll find out. Overall, I'll give the episode a 7.5/10, rounding it up to an 8. I'll say it's as good as the King County episode.
