Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Not as good as the trilogy
The film is set centuries after the previous trilogy ended; apes have flourished and spread across the land. Different communities have developed individual lifestyles, such as rearing eagles for hunting. This part of the story is interesting with good use of CGI and cinematography. Would have liked to have seen more of this.
However, the plot is too similar to the previous films with conflict between apes and also between apes and humans, for similar reasons.
Andy Serkis doesn't star in the movie and his absence shows how much of the success of the preceding films was down to his excellent depiction of Caesar.
I saw this in IMAX and that made it more enjoyable than I may have otherwise found it. If you don't see this you aren't missing much; hopefully the sequels will improve.
The Great (2020)
Apt title
This is a great show. It's not meant to be a historically accurate version; it's a black comedy but with scenes of real pathos. The actors have British accents; even the American ones such as Fanning and hers is particularly good. The humour and dialogue is contemporary British. The cinematography, costumes and set design are superb. Fanning is brilliant displaying intelligence and maturity. There are many excellent performances from the supporting cast; too many to mention. I particularly liked Douglas Hodge as Velementov the drunken general and Adam Godley as the Patriarch. The viewer develops a real connection to the characters even the dislikeable ones (although they are all dislikeable to a degree). There is a lot of sex and swearing but in a humourous tone. But you still get a sense of the violence and political skulduggery that would have taken place in the actual Russian court.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Surprisingly Good
I played D&D as a teenager so was looking forward to this but when I saw the adverts, I thought this was going to be silly like the 2000 film. I wanted a serious action-adventure. Decided to give it a chance and was pleasantly surprised, the movie shouldn't work but does. Pine, Rodriguez, Daisy Head, Rege-Jean Page are all great. It's the right mix of light-hearted humour, pathos and action. The use of CGI is excellent; the depiction of the Red Wizards of Thay is particularly impressive. It is set in the Forgotten Realms world familiar to D&D fans, so will please them. However, it doesn't require knowledge of the game to enjoy so viewers without any prior experience will find it easily accessible. Rounded out with a good soundtrack especially the end credits song. Special mention for Jarnathan!
