Wildcat (2023)
Intriguing way to document a determined writer
Writing is a creative process-the movie builds an arc by going back and forth from Flannery O'Connors real life to the stories she writes. We see her determination, fierce authenticity and bravery through her mother's parenting, a love interest, the prejudices, difficulties and limited knowledge of the times and O'Connor's efforts to both get published and stay true to her own voice, pushing the medium of writing itself. The issue (for my friend too) was not being able to catch all the sentences-sometimes the intimate voices got lost in mumbling, and I believe every word is important here. Still got a lot. It has a great ending as well, bringing many things home.
Spirited (2022)
Right Ending at the Right Time
I thoroughly enjoyed Spirited and loved the message. Yes, it could have ended in a couple different places - a tribute to how good it was. It had to end where it did as a tribute to the spirit and the afterlife, the connection to us all. I loved how it was an entertaining musical that made fun of musicals. The comedic timing was superb throughout and the acting and dancing from everyone was, in a word, generous. So many small parts that fit together. Is that Judy Dench? Having kids in such prominent roles added yet another layer of depth. And hey, we all need more bros. A movie to feel good about and maybe do good from. More please.
