Poor Things (2023)
The beauty of the unconventional
A beautiful journey of a woman that is meant to do whatever the f she wants. Exploring the cruel, marvellous, weird world that we live in.
I got into the movie open minded, and left amazed by its brilliance and unique visual identity. I was entertained all of the two hours and twenty minutes, by Bella's authenticity and way of thinking.
If I'm being truly honest, they did an amazing job with the "Furious Jumping" scenes in which I felt
very uncomfortable to watch at first , but eventually it just felt organic, normal and funny. I loved the s*x positivity of the film.
Also, comedic timing was on point! I had some good laughs at the cinema, with Bella's fierceness, Duncan's little break downs and amazing dialogs.
I do think Duncan, is such a men character. I mean he comes with all of his charm and says "no strings", freedom and then he just becomes more and more in love with Bella as she ignores him. Perfectly portray a lot of men lol.
This piece made me ponder a lot about how we are always told about manners as kids in the society, and always so taught to be conventional, when the best things, normally are made by the most unconventional minds.
All of the movie remembered me of this lyric that I love:
"Please picture me in the weeds
Before I learned civility
I used to scream ferociously
Anytime I wanted
I, I"
Madame Web (2024)
The web of bad superhero movies, unfortunately attacks again
I'm not exaggerating when I write that I have no idea how on earth this script was approved, I'm trying very hard to squeeze some good things to talk about, I'm having difficulties.
"Madame Web" is a movie that all of us superhero's enthusiasts were expecting and rooting to be good, her arc at the comics is such a rich and interesting story that I personally was expecting to see on screen.
I was shocked in how fast the movie went out of a solid 6 to a 3/2. It's honestly impressive.
Until she has the ambulance crash vison that her friend dies, I will be very honest that I was intrigued and not hating at all the individual story of Cassie Webb. After that the movie started to lose me for good. In particular when the three girls were introduced, they were so poorly introduced and poorly continued in the movie that it's honestly impressive again.
I'm not even gonna talk about the CGI (specially, the underwater scenes ) or the dialog quality bc lately this problems have been super frequent in this genre. But the plot holes were too much to handle 😭 and the embarrassing fight scenes were just enough for me to wanna leave the cinema.
They managed to do a superhero movie without a superhero and putting Emma Roberts as a "wannabe comic relief" when she could offer so much more!!!!! And Dakota, Sydney, Isabela and Celeste could've done so much with a decent script.
The thing is, the big studios, don't learn ever that a good superhero movie doesn't have a formula to copy and paste and a superhero movie REQUIRES A SUPERHERO!!!
They made "Morbius" a friend to make company in down tier of "Movies that I'd like to be able to erase from my mind".
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)
A very good prequel, but a "ok" movie on its on
A good prequel, nothing outstanding it's just good.
My main problem is the length of the movie, which in my opinion is too long.
The thing is, Hunger games is a work of art and some people didn't really understand that this is a film to complement the og trilogy, do not compete with it.
With this in mind, this was very good backstory for snow and why he is the way he is and I think this worked wonderfully in the sense that didn't humanize a crazy genocide, they just made us understand why he is the way he is.
This was one of my biggest fears with this movie, because on the book of THIS MOVIE in my opinion, they draw a very fine line in the sense of almost humanising snow, and if they did that in the movie it would really suck.
Lucy greys parallels with Katniss are just a cosmic way to punish Snow for everything and the fact that we don't really know what happened with Lucy makes me smile wildly. Bc he lived all of his life being truly scared of her coming back. Also, Rachel singed beautifully and the lyrics really match so well with what's happening!
Didn't really loved all of the arena scenes, it felt too long and rushed at the same time.
Concluding, a very good prequel but a "ok" movie, it adds a lot to the hunger games story but as a "on its on movie" it doesn't really work. I will come back now to the fact that I thought that the movie was too LONG and unnecessarily LONG there were things that could've cutted or shorten and others that were too rushed. They didn't dealt greatly with time.
Really liked it though, good acting, and costumes (especially hunters characterisation, she looked beautiful) I was just starving for some hunger games content tbh!
Barbie (2023)
A movie made for humans
Barbie was full of surprises since the day it went public they were making a movie. I was very exited and intrigued, How a film like this could be done??
And the answer is Greta Gerwig.
Her way of making movies just feel for me so maternal for me. She takes care of the movie and the little details like a a baby. Lady Bird, Little Woman and Barbie just pass me a really similar vibe in the way it was build.
No Barbie without Margot and no Ken without Ryan lol. Both of them did a great job putting out this genuineness and innocence on this roles. Also the amazing humanity they were capable of bringing to the characters which ironically are dolls.
Talking about humanity, America Ferreira's monologue killed me. Even though she says things that have been said a hundred times, she manages not to make a cliche. And such relatable words were said in that monologue!
I feel like "What was I made for?" was a perfect song for the movie, because it is in the end the question that pounds everyone's head at leat once a day, why am here? What am I supposed to do or feel? Beautiful words, voice and melody. I am in love with Billie's music.
Coming back for what I said in the beginning about this being a movie for humans, this made so much sense for me when Margot said that in the Golden Globes Speech. The movie is such a beautiful representation of so many things in life (mainly in a woman's life).
In my view of the movie, I just tended to compare Barbie, discovering the world for the first time, just like when a kid starts being self-aware of their existence in the planet. Because until some point you just exist and there is just one Day that everything just starts to make sense somehow, and you're just now a part of the world, the good and the bad. This being the transition from childhood to teenage hood and eventually adulthood.
Beautiful movie, outstanding soundtrack and very touching and funny.
Anyone But You (2023)
Manifesting the come back of romcoms
There's nothing really to complain. It's a great movie! Nothing that was revolutionary or else. It's a solid, good, funny romcom.
Considering that romcoms lately have been extinguished, I think it's a delight to have something like this to watch.
Glenn and Sidney were on spot and the marketing for the movie was very smart. The fake dating trope always give it to us hilarious scenes and other worlds chemistry.
I do hope this movie open the gates to New Romantic Comedy's to rise and shine. I want the silly and the beautiful not something moral and "we hate man and love" let's make something to the delusional girly's.
Something that I loved about the movie was the moments that something was quoted in the middle of a scene. Like some beautiful thing written on the sand and this details. Very cool.
Liked it a lot, watch it!
Letters to Juliet (2010)
A modern fairytale
Awesome movie! Such a beautiful story and beautiful words are said there. The letter about the "what ifs" makes my heart crumble every time.
It's a need after this film to go to Verona and fall in love. Lorenzo and Claire made me cry rivers! Such a good dynamic and a amazing flow of the movie.
Sophie and Charlie enemies to lovers thing just makes my heart pound.
Also the breakup of Sophie and Victor was such a well written thing. The fact that people can love each other and not be right for each other is very much real. And of course people have priority's and victor had his.
The movie is a romcom gem!! Just watch it!
Oppenheimer (2023)
Dude I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders
Oppenheimer was an amazing surprise! I wasn't super exited for the release of even for Oppenheimer at all, and honestly I get now why people were actually loving this movie.
My only critic is that it's a very long movie, but I don't think there could be a shorten version of it so I guess I personally think it's a movie to be watched at home. For me of course, it's a movie of reflection and so you capture the message you need to watch at least for the first time in your time.
I loved it , Cillian Murphy's acting is magnificent and no one else could capture the deep of the character besides him. He rocked!
Everything about this movie is admirable and lovable. RDJ is amazing too and Emily blunt too. For some reason people were telling me that the movie was too much talking and no action and honestly when it comes to this I'm the first one to critic, but in this case it was honestly amazing the way they did it.
They would be no other way to create tension and make us understand history in general without that conversations, so I highly disagree. And honestly, in the beginning, it feels a little uncomfortable because of all of the physics talking and I wasn't understanding anything so it was almost like I was watching Top Gun for the first time (lol my reference sucked) I need to get in this world and understand everything, so I would if you actually in there.
Which brings me to the fact that they actually made me feel like the weight of the world was in my shoulders for a movie to make you feel this way it's got to be good. Christopher Nolan was on point, and the cinematography of the movie is magic. The whole metaphor with Prometeu and the fire was so on point, and I honestly had a lot of empathy for Robert.
I loved Einstein in the movie. I felt like his connection with Oppenheimer was such a unique one and there were times that we could honestly feel what open Heimer was feeling and this was just an out of body experience for me.
Sometimes I have a problem to connect to male characters, because I'm a female and experiences are different and in general sometimes I don't feel like watching a whole man movie. But this movie was something different in that story, probably because it's based on real life stuff, but it was honestly amazing.
Cillian Murphy needs to be given an Oscar for this!!!! The make up to age him was pretty good too. Loved it! Too long though lol.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
A horror movie for trashy men, At the same time a freaking overcoming and revenge movie for woman
*Disclaimer that the English is terrible bc I translated it from my language so, sorry lol.*
It would be a better movie if it had met my personal expectations lol.
That it was it to be a vigilante hate men movie.
I also swore it would be another ending (I got wrong spoiled) so when there really was a final I was a little sad and disappointed.
In general the movie is very good and the movie could sustain itself in just one scene that is the one where Cassie holds Al in bed and has a chat with him, which leads us to that quote that makes me go spiral every time I hear it.
For me what was very bad was that she died, because it kind of breaks a lot of expectation, you hope she can get revenge for the whole movie so that in the end she can't really do it alive, a gigantic bucket of cold water. Since Cassie was super brilliant and if she already knew that her plan was flawed, why the hell didn't she make another one? (I'm still in denial that she died, I hate Al with all of my bones)
I understand that it is a criticism of the system not being at all fair to victims and always preserving predators. And that the film showed in a perfect way. It was much more of a personal disappointment what I thought was bad about the movie, since I went to watch it swearing that it would be kind of suspense and not social criticism slap in the face. I just wanted a well-done female revenge
Well anyways, the director is incredible and acting in the film is from another world, not to mention the setting of the scenarios and several camera moves that show and anticipate the story in the perfect way. The film also hits the search for blind revenge and how much it ruins your life.
A touch that I found amazing that I don't know who did this, if it was the production or if it was the director herself of having casted men who are known for always playing good guys to interpret this human garbage. And the great credibility we give to these guys was also an interesting tension of the movie, like when there was the scene of Adam Brody taking Cassie home I could only hope for adam not to do something bad, and I believed until the end that he wasn't going to be a bad person I was believing believing believing, in a way it's literally what we do with the men of society when something bad
happens, we always justify we always forgive sorry and it doesn't have to be like that.
This movie officially made me afraid to get married and find out that my husband was actually an bad person or is still, I can only marry creatures that I already know, I'm literally scared.
It would be five stars if I hadn't imagined something else for the movie.
I loved it, a revenge movie for women with a fabulous but tragic ending.
And a horror movie for trashy and bad guys ,just a reminder that the bill can be very much delayed but you will have to pay it one way or the other.
