The Painter (I) (2022– )

Started out promising, but now is just a big mess
22 December 2023
When I first saw the series, I liked it. The art is good and the concept of human killers rather than supernatural entities is a great idea, as well as new grounds for analog horror. However, as the series goes on, it just becomes a bunch of videos full of nothing but shock value.

The series fails to provide any depth to the characters, so when they die, it's hard to feel bad for them because stuff like that keeps happening. On that note, the episodes are just Warning Sign, Text about a murder scene, and scary painting. It's the same thing for a majority of the show. And the crimes themselves are just so unnecessarily violent (there's a woman stabbed in a inappropriate part while drowning and a dog whose legs are broken for no reason by the killers, and those are the tamer ones) and this violence doesn't add much to the story aside from saying that the killers are bad.

I'm not saying this is the worst horror show I've seen, there are things such as the voice acting in "FAMILY" that I applaud, but the series itself is just a bunch of edgy stuff on top of edgy stuff that I hope is fixed in the future. If you don't mind more than 10 minutes of mindless violence that barely goes anywhere, this series is for you. As for me, I'm hoping that this series is saved soon.

Goosebumps (2023– )

Not as bad as I worried
13 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Admittedly, it isn't as good as the original series, but that doesn't mean it's a bad show. It's got a charm to it. The first episode does take a bit before the ghosts come, but it does pick up with character development and storytelling. Plus, it still has the monsters/cursed items from the books and still has them do their canon scares, it just adds some twists to it that, as a goosebumps fan, I don't mind. The camera still causes people to get hurt and the mask still influences it's wearer to be more toxic. Let me make it clear that this isn't better than the original show, because it's not, but I still think that this show is worth a shot.

Digital horror at it's best

Warning: Spoilers
The series is great. It's premise, reliving old memories, only to find that they are being attacked, is a very creative idea. It can also be seen as nostalgic for people who used to use flipnote before it was canceled in 2013. The animations used are also very creative and well-done and help give the series a darker, but also creative art style. The voice acting is also pretty decent and you can tell that the people involved worked hard for it.

On that note, the series can be a bit confusing and hard to understand at first, and even after understanding most of it, it's still rather difficult. Despite this, the series is a pretty great and creative project.
